But a reliable, like-for-like ranking of eight events across boxing and MMA cannot be established from the reported figures available here. The list below distinguishes documented comparisons from estimates rather than presenting an unsupported top eight.
Why a definitive top-eight ranking is difficult
“Biggest” can mean purchases, revenue, audience, or total event income. This article uses reported PPV buys—the number of purchases—as its comparison measure. It does not treat revenue, broadcast audience, or career totals as event buy counts.
The available figures also do not share one reporting standard. The leading boxing number was announced by broadcasters and reported as U.S. buys; UFC figures are industry estimates, and the consulted overview says UFC does not release official PPV statistics. The sources therefore support a record and several notable comparisons, not a defensible cross-sport ranking from first through eighth.
Record and notable reported PPV events
These are the events the cited sources substantiate. They are not an ordered top-eight list: the figures differ in source and evidentiary status, and the available material does not establish comparable figures for eight events.

| Event | Reported buys | What the figure establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao (2015) | More than 4.4 million U.S. buys | Showtime and HBO announced the figure, as reported by CBS Philadelphia on May 12, 2015. The report called it a record. CBS Philadelphia |
| Oscar De La Hoya vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. (2007) | 2.48 million buys | CBS Philadelphia identified this as the previous record when reporting the 2015 result. CBS Philadelphia |
| Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Conor McGregor (2017) | Not stated in the cited comparison | Sporting News characterized it as the second-biggest PPV of all time and reported that McGregor headlined seven of the ten best-selling UFC PPVs. That characterization does not provide a complete event-by-event, cross-sport ranking. Sporting News |
| UFC 229: Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor (2018) | Approximately 2.4 million estimated buys | The figure is an industry-reported estimate, not an official UFC statistic, according to the cited PPV overview. Pay-per-view overview |
What the record figures mean—and what they do not
Mayweather–Pacquiao’s buy record
The fight took place on May 2, 2015. CBS Philadelphia reported that Showtime and HBO announced more than 4.4 million U.S. buys and more than $400 million in domestic PPV revenue. A 2015 Proskauer article likewise reported 4.4 million buys and more than $400 million in PPV revenue; it cited an approximate $89.95 per buy, a historical figure that should not be assumed to apply to every purchase or commercial viewing arrangement. CBS Philadelphia; Proskauer
PPV revenue is not the same as total event receipts
The CBS report said worldwide gross receipts were expected to exceed $500 million after including gate receipts, international distribution, sponsorships, closed-circuit viewing, and merchandise. That was an expectation reported at the time—not a final audited total—and it is a different measure from domestic PPV revenue. CBS Philadelphia

UFC 229’s figure is an estimate, not an official count
The PPV overview gives UFC 229 approximately 2.4 million buys while noting that UFC does not publish official PPV statistics and that the totals are reported by industry insiders. In a Sports Illustrated interview published November 1, 2018, UFC president Dana White called it “One of the biggest pay per views of all time,” then answered “Number four or number five” when asked its rank. Those comments are White’s assessment in an interview, not an audited count or settled ranking. Pay-per-view overview; Sports Illustrated
A career record cannot stand in for one event
Guinness World Records lists Mayweather’s career PPV sales as $1.7 billion from 23.98 million buys across 16 fights between June 25, 2005, and August 26, 2017. The page is dated August 26, 2017. Those are career aggregates, not the buys for a single event; Guinness also notes that records can change before updates appear online. Guinness World Records

How to read any claimed “top eight”
A credible ranking should show the basis for every entry, not just place unlike figures in one numbered list. Before comparing events, check:
- Metric: Is the number purchases, PPV revenue, total event revenue, or audience?
- Geography: Does it count U.S. purchases or worldwide sales?
- Source status: Was the figure announced by a broadcaster or promoter, reported by a publication, or estimated by industry sources?
- Date and revisions: When was it reported, and was it later revised?
Without consistent answers, an exact ordinal list can suggest more certainty than the underlying reporting supports.
