Former communications director Margaret Krohn alleged that workers would not receive final paychecks or other amounts she said they were owed. The available reporting does not establish what each employee ultimately received or that a court found a wage violation. A later court order put a limited receiver in charge of preserving company assets; it did not announce that development would resume.
What happened to Ashes of Creation?
The shutdown became public on January 31, 2026. Krohn said she learned on January 28 that 100 developers would be laid off. She said the whole studio was then informed on January 31, alongside a WARN notice. California WARN records were later reported as listing a permanent closure affecting 123 employees.
The two figures describe different reports and stages: Krohn’s account of an initial planned developer layoff and the employee count recorded in the state notice. They should not be combined into a single headcount.

The January announcement followed a director’s letter reportedly promising a February 13 development update. That timing helps explain why the layoffs appeared abrupt to employees and players, but it does not establish what studio leaders knew or intended at the time.

Were employees laid off without final pay?
Krohn alleged that employees would not receive final paychecks, 60 days of notice or pay under WARN, PTO payouts, or other compensation she said was owed. Her statement is an allegation about the expected outcome, not a confirmed accounting of what each former employee was ultimately paid.
Two former employees filed a class action on February 5, 2026, alleging WARN Act violations. A docket listing retrieved on July 20 showed amended pleadings and ongoing proceedings. The available record does not establish a final judgment, a finding that the company violated the law, or the eventual payroll outcome for individual workers.
For workers trying to understand their own finances, the distinction matters: the reported headcount and the allegation do not reveal any one person’s unpaid wages, leave balance, notice pay, or recovery. Those amounts cannot be calculated from the public figures here.

Why did Intrepid Studios shut down?
The cause of the collapse is disputed. Steven Sharif, Intrepid’s co-founder and former CEO and creative director, said control shifted away from him and the board directed actions he could not ethically support. He said he resigned in protest, that much of senior leadership followed, and that the board then proceeded with a mass layoff.
Those are Sharif’s public claims, not independent findings about why the company closed. Court pleadings also contain allegations by parties to the dispute; they should not be treated as established facts. The available evidence does not settle the governance dispute or establish a single proven explanation for the shutdown.
What did the court-appointed receiver do?
On August 27, 2026, a federal judge appointed a limited receiver over Intrepid Studios. The receiver’s defined duties include safeguarding intellectual property and related assets, overseeing any foreclosure sale, and analyzing secured debt.

The order is an asset-preservation and oversight measure. It does not say that a sale has happened, that the game has transferred to a new developer, or that development or a relaunch will resume.

February 2026 reporting said the game had been removed from Steam sale after the layoff announcement. That report does not establish its current store listing, whether servers are operating, or what refund options apply to a particular purchase. The receiver order concerns custody and preservation of assets, not player access or refunds.

How does the shutdown fit into the game’s history?
Ashes of Creation raised nearly $3.3 million through its 2017 Kickstarter campaign, according to PC Gamer’s 2026 reporting. That fundraiser is part of the game’s history, but it does not by itself establish what any individual backer is owed following the studio’s closure.
The later WARN case and receiver appointment show that the consequences continued beyond the initial layoff announcement. Neither proceeding, as described in the available reporting, provides a final resolution of employee pay claims or a promise of a future game release.
