A close-fitting hydration vest suits long or remote routes; a belt or small vest may be enough for a short run; and a larger pack makes more sense when you also need commuting storage. Capacity is only a starting point: fit, water access, pocket layout and required gear matter just as much.
Choose a pack for the run you actually do
Start by listing what you need to carry: water, fuel, phone, keys, an extra layer, safety equipment or commute items. Then choose the lightest carry style that accommodates that load without bouncing.
- Short road or urban run: You may not need a pack for a run under an hour, particularly if you can leave belongings trackside or have water available along the route. For a phone, keys or a small amount of fuel, a running belt can be less cumbersome than a backpack. Salomon discusses these options in its running-pack guide.
- Long training run: A close-fitting hydration vest provides front access to water and fuel while carrying a layer or other essentials.
- Remote trail or race with mandatory kit: Choose capacity and organization around the equipment and water you must carry, including any event requirements. Pole carry and accessible safety items may matter more than a low weight.
- Run commute: A larger, more organized pack may be useful for clothing, a laptop or shoes. A general-purpose commuter pack is not necessarily shaped to stay still while running, so check how it fits when loaded and in motion.
As Rickey Gates puts it in Salomon’s guide, “Choosing a running back pack depends on the distance you will be running and the amount of equipment you will need to carry.”
How much capacity do you need?
Published capacity recommendations vary. They are useful starting points, not a universal standard: the right size depends on carried kit, access to water, weather and route support as well as time on the run.

| Run duration or route | Salomon guide | REI 2025 guide |
|---|---|---|
| Under two hours | 2–5 L for 1–2 hours | About 2 L for under two hours |
| Up to three hours | 6–10 L for runs longer than three hours | 2–6 L |
| Up to six hours | Not stated in this duration band | 4–12 L |
| Longer than six hours, ultras or remote trails | 12 L for ultras or remote trails | At least 6 L for longer outings |
These are recommendations from two different guides, not capacity rules. A supported route with refill points can call for less carried water than a remote one; mandatory equipment or cold weather can increase the space needed. Salomon’s recommendations are in its guide, and REI’s are in its 2025 hydration-vest guide.
Running vest, backpack or belt?
Running vest
A running vest is designed to sit close to the body, with front pockets for water and frequently used items. That close fit helps limit movement. It is often the most practical format for longer runs when you need to carry water, fuel and a layer.

Larger running or multi-activity pack
A bigger pack offers more room for equipment or commute items, but extra space is useful only if the load stays controlled. A multi-activity or generic backpack may move more than a running-specific vest. Try it with the contents you plan to carry and check for bounce before relying on it for a run.
Running belt
A belt can work for shorter efforts when you need only a phone, keys, gels or a small flask. Runna names the Salomon Pulse Belt as a low-profile option for that kind of light load; check the current product details and fit before buying.

Fit the pack before judging its capacity
A pack that holds enough but rubs or bounces can make a run uncomfortable. Measure as the manufacturer directs, adjust the pack snugly and test it with realistic clothing and weight. Snug should not mean painfully tight.
- Measure where the maker instructs. REI recommends measuring the torso below the bust or at the top of the rib cage, then following the manufacturer’s sizing guidance. Use the specific measurement method for the model rather than assuming all brands size alike.
- Load it realistically. Bring the water vessels, layer and other items you expect to carry. A lightly loaded try-on may not reveal how the pack behaves on your actual route.
- Adjust and move. Tighten straps until the pack sits close without restricting breathing or feeling painful. Jog, reach for front pockets and check for shifting, rubbing or pressure points.
- Check fit options. Compare the available size range and any women’s or gender-specific fit variants, where offered. Choose by the maker’s measurements and your try-on, not by the label alone.
REI’s guidance on measurement and fit is in its hydration-vest guide.

Choose a hydration system you can use on the move
Front soft flasks
Soft flasks sit at the front of many vests, making them easy to reach, sip from and refill. Check whether flasks are included, how many the pack accepts and what capacity they hold; a vest’s gear capacity is not the same as its liquid capacity.
Rear reservoir
A rear bladder can carry more water, but it is less immediately accessible and must be secured well to reduce sloshing. Check that the pack accepts the reservoir size you want and whether the reservoir is included or sold separately.

Litres describe space, not how useful that space is during a run. Look for storage arranged around what you need to reach and what you can carry out of the way.
- Front pockets: Useful for flasks, fuel and a phone you want to reach without stopping.
- Secure pocket: A zipped or otherwise secure pocket helps keep keys and small valuables contained.
- Rear storage: Check whether there is room for an extra layer and whether compression keeps a partly filled pack from shifting.
- Route-specific features: Pole carry, reflective details and space for required safety equipment may be important on technical or remote routes.
- Weather protection: Water-resistant fabric is not the same as waterproof construction. Protect sensitive items separately if they must stay dry.
- Commute organization: If you plan to run with a laptop or shoes, look for dedicated compartments and then test how the loaded pack sits while running.
Running backpacks and vests to consider by use

| Model | Potential use | Published details in the cited guide |
|---|---|---|
| Salomon Adv Skin 12 | Higher-capacity running vest for carrying more gear | REI’s 2025 guide calls it a standout vest and says it comes with bottles, accepts a reservoir, and does not include one. Runna describes a snug fit, expandable compartments and a weight of 293 g. See REI and Runna. |
| Salomon Active Skin 8 Set | Long training runs and other outings where a vest-style carry suits the load | Runna lists two included 500 ml soft flasks, compatibility with a 1.5 L bladder and a weight of 249 g. See Runna. |
| Ultimate Direction Fastpack 20 | Long trail outings or fastpacking | Runna describes up to 23 L of space, a weight of 715 g and a vest-style harness. Confirm the exact model and current capacity with the manufacturer. See Runna. |
| REI Co-op Swiftland 5 | Runs needing a small pack with a reservoir included | REI lists 5 L of gear capacity and an included 1.5 L reservoir. In its 2025 guide, REI reports 79 miles of testing across California, Maine and Washington; some testers found a snug fit harder to achieve. See REI. |
| Tracksmith Olmsted Pack | Run commuting with clothing or work items | T3 lists 18 L, a laptop pocket, shoe compartment, adjustable straps and removable hip belt. Its article has mixed date signals: a 2025 headline alongside a “Best running backpack 2026” quick-links block. Treat the listing as context, not a verified current ranking, and confirm the model details before buying. See T3. |
| Salomon Pulse Belt | Shorter efforts and light carry | Runna describes room for a phone, keys and gels, plus a small flask. See Runna. |
REI reports that its 2025 testing covered a total of 168 miles for the Salomon Advanced Skin 5 section and 79 miles for the Swiftland 5 across California, Maine and Washington. Those are reported test distances, not evidence that either pack will suit every runner.
