The FAA certified Boeing’s 737-7, marketed as the 737 MAX 7, on August 3, 2026, and authorized production. But the aircraft has not yet entered passenger service: Boeing said it was preparing the first aircraft for delivery to launch customer Southwest Airlines, while Southwest’s reported expectation is to begin revenue service in 2027. No exact first-flight date or MAX 7 route has been confirmed in the sources available.
What is the latest status of the 737 MAX 7?
Certification is complete; passenger operations are not. On August 3, 2026, the FAA issued an amended type certificate for the aircraft, which the agency identifies as the 737-7, and updated Boeing’s Production Limitation Record to authorize production. The FAA says the certificate confirms compliance with applicable design and safety requirements. FAA certification statement
Boeing said it and Southwest were preparing the first aircraft for delivery, including final-configuration updates. That is a preparation milestone, not confirmation that an aircraft has been delivered or flown with passengers. Boeing announcement
When will Southwest begin flying it?
Southwest was reported in June 2026 as expecting the MAX 7 to enter revenue service during 2027. Reuters’ report, syndicated through Investing.com, predates the FAA’s August certification announcement; the year remains an airline expectation, not a guaranteed start date. No aircraft-specific first route or exact inaugural passenger-flight date has been verified. Reuters report via Investing.com

That distinction matters when checking flight schedules: certification and production authorization do not themselves establish a delivery date, an operating schedule, or a booked MAX 7 flight. The available reporting does not name a confirmed first route.
Why did certification take so long?
The FAA describes its review as lasting “almost a decade” and says it performed or directly reviewed substantial work on flight controls, system safety assessments, human factors, flightcrew alerting, and other novel or safety-critical areas. The agency required testing, design changes, and further analysis where needed. FAA certification statement

Before approval, the FAA required updates to flight-control software and the flightcrew alerting system, as well as a redesigned engine anti-ice system. The agency said the changes give pilots clearer information and warnings and address the risk that engine-inlet overheating could potentially weaken nearby structure. The heightened scrutiny followed the two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019 involving the larger 737 MAX 8; the Associated Press reported that 346 people died. Those crash aircraft were MAX 8s, not MAX 7s. Associated Press report

What is the 737 MAX 7?
Boeing describes the 737-7 as the smallest and longest-range member of the 737 MAX family. Its published specifications list 135–160 seats in a two-class configuration and a maximum range of 3,800 nautical miles (7,040 km). What does approval mean for production and oversight?
The FAA’s updated Production Limitation Record authorizes Boeing to produce the aircraft. The agency also said FAA inspectors would remain at Boeing production facilities to monitor manufacturing and safety management. Certification therefore marks a major regulatory step, while production oversight continues. FAA certification statement FAA production oversight statement
