Saving money can help you handle a financial shock, pay for planned expenses with less borrowing, and make longer-term goals more attainable. The right target depends on your income, expenses, and priorities; there is no single savings amount or account that fits every household.
1. Build a reserve for emergencies
An emergency fund can help cover a sudden income interruption or a major, unexpected home or car repair without relying entirely on credit. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) says financial experts generally recommend keeping at least six months of living expenses in emergency savings. That is general guidance, not a universal rule or a requirement to reach all at once.
If that target feels out of reach, begin with an amount you can manage and build it over time. The FDIC gives an illustrative example: saving $20 every other week adds up to $520, plus interest, in a year. This is an example of how regular contributions accumulate, not a return forecast.
2. Prepare for retirement
Retirement savings can help bridge the gap between the income you expect to have and the expenses you expect to face later. The FDIC recommends estimating likely retirement income and comparing it with anticipated expenses and debt. That comparison can help you identify whether retirement is a goal that needs attention alongside nearer-term needs.

3. Work toward buying a home
A down payment is one possible savings goal, but the amount needed depends on the home, loan program, costs, and your circumstances. Avoid assuming that one percentage is a universal requirement. A home-purchase goal can also account for costs beyond the down payment, so define what you are saving for before setting a target.
4. Earn interest while keeping savings accessible
Interest can help savings grow, but rates and account terms change. When comparing places to hold cash, look at access to funds, fees, the rate offered, withdrawal rules, and deposit-insurance coverage. The FDIC says a traditional savings account at an FDIC-insured bank offers easy withdrawals and some interest; certificates of deposit (CDs) may impose penalties for early withdrawal.

5. Pay for planned purchases with less borrowing
Saving for a car, trip, or another large purchase can reduce how much you need to borrow—and therefore may reduce interest and fees. It does not mean paying cash is always the best choice: consider your other obligations and avoid using money set aside for emergencies without weighing the consequences.

7. Fund education goals
Education savings may help pay for future schooling or training. State-sponsored 529 plans can offer tax benefits or other features for residents, but costs and benefits vary by plan and situation. Compare a plan with other savings options, and consult current official plan and tax information rather than assuming a particular tax result.

- Name the goal. Separate emergency savings from goals such as a down payment, education, or a planned purchase.
- Set a target and deadline. Use an amount and date that reflect your own costs and circumstances.
- Choose a contribution you can sustain. Regular automatic transfers can help build savings, as the FDIC notes, but set them at a level that fits your cash flow.
- Choose where the money will go. Compare access, fees, interest, restrictions, protections, and—if considering investments—market risk.
- Review the plan when circumstances change. Income, expenses, account terms, and priorities can shift, so revisit the target and contribution when needed.
