To sell sheep’s wool, protect the fleece from contamination and moisture, sort it honestly, and contact buyers before shearing. Your best route depends on fleece quality, lot size, local options and the work you are willing to do. Ask for current terms from likely buyers rather than relying on a general wool-price figure.
1. Prevent contamination before shearing
Good sale preparation starts with clean handling and shearing areas. Chaff, burrs, hay, straw and dirt take time to remove and can reduce the wool’s appeal to buyers. Maine Cooperative Extension advises separating belly wool and tags from the main fleece, avoiding second cuts, and keeping the fleece in one piece when possible: Maine Cooperative Extension’s wool marketing guidance.
2. Skirt and sort the fleece honestly
Skirting means removing portions that are stained, short, matted, dirty or contaminated instead of presenting them as part of a premium fleece. Keep visibly inferior sections and distinct wool types separate, and label bags so a buyer can assess the lot. 3. Keep wool dry and package it for the buyer
Store wool in a clean, dry place until sale. Maine Extension warns that moisture trapped in plastic can lead to mold. For small hobbyist quantities, Alberta describes paper or clean cloth bags as options; larger commercial lots may use specialty wool sacks. 4. Compare selling channels before the clip is ready
Contact potential buyers while you still have time to plan sorting, packaging and transport. Options may include a local wool buyer or shearer, a wool pool or cooperative, a mill, or handcraft customers buying an individual fleece. Availability is local, so confirm that a channel actually operates near you.

5. Compare current offers on net terms
Ask each potential buyer how it grades wool, whether it wants sorted or unsorted fleece, what minimum quantity it accepts, how transport or collection works, and when and how payment is calculated. Compare what you would actually keep after preparation, storage, travel, handling and selling costs.
The Agricultural Marketing Resource Center’s Wool Profile reports a U.S. wool price of $1.56 per pound and total wool value of $35.3 million for 2023, attributed to the American Sheep Industry. Those figures are historical market context, not a current offer for your fleece or a forecast. The profile also reports 3.17 million sheep and lambs shorn for wool in 2024; that production figure does not establish a current price. A Virginia producer survey illustrates how marketing choices can vary by place and respondent group: among the 52 respondents who answered the wool-marketing question, 63.46% said they sold raw fleece to a local wool pool or buyer, 36.54% said they sold value fleece online, and 42.31% said they sold value-added wool products.
