Federal rules generally cap the amount and require repayment within five years, but the plan can set stricter terms. Before borrowing, check how payments work, what happens if you leave your job, and whether the loan could undermine your retirement savings.
Can you borrow from your 401(k)?
Only if your employer’s plan allows participant loans. Federal law permits qualified plans to offer loans but does not require them to do so. Check your Summary Plan Description (SPD) and ask the plan administrator for the current application process, approval criteria, fees, interest rate, payment method, and rules if you leave employment. The IRS explains the general rules in its 401(k) Resource Guide for plan participants, but your plan’s terms determine whether you can borrow and on what conditions.
How much can you borrow from a 401(k)?
The federal limit is generally the lesser of $50,000 or 50% of your vested account balance, subject to adjustments for prior loans. It is a ceiling, not a guaranteed amount: your plan may set a lower limit or offer no loans at all.
The $50,000 limit can be reduced if you had another plan loan outstanding during the one-year period ending the day before the new loan. The calculation takes account of the highest outstanding balance in that period and the balance, if any, on the date of the new loan. Consequently, repaying an earlier loan shortly before applying may not restore the full federal limit immediately. The IRS sets out the calculation and a limited exception in its retirement plan loan guidance.

In some cases, a plan may permit a loan of up to $10,000 when 50% of the vested balance is less than $10,000. The plan is not required to offer this exception, so ask the administrator what amount is actually available to you.
How does repayment work?
A qualifying loan generally must be repaid in substantially level installments that include principal and interest, at least quarterly, and within five years. Your plan may require more frequent payroll deductions. Confirm the payment amount, start date, and method before accepting the loan; missed or inadequate payments can have tax consequences.

A longer term may be allowed for a loan used to acquire a dwelling that will become your principal residence within a reasonable time. This is a limited exception, not a general extension for any housing-related expense. The plan’s terms and documentation matter. The IRS describes the repayment requirements in its loan FAQ.
When might a 401(k) loan make sense?
There is no universal best choice. A loan may be worth evaluating if it is available under your plan and you have a reliable way to make the required payments. Compare it with other borrowing sources using the same practical questions:

- Total cost: What interest and fees will you pay over the full repayment period?
- Payment flexibility: Can you manage the required schedule, including if your income changes?
- Job separation: Does the plan require repayment if you leave, and can you meet that requirement?
- Nonpayment consequences: What would happen if you miss payments or cannot repay?
- Retirement impact: How might taking money out of the account affect investment earnings and the amount available for retirement?
- Availability: Is the loan actually permitted, and what conditions does the plan impose?
The IRS specifically prompts participants to ask, “Before you borrow from your 401(k) plan, have you considered other loan sources?” Its guidance also cautions that borrowing can reduce account earnings and the money available for retirement. A 401(k) loan is not automatically cheap or risk-free; weigh its full cost and repayment rules against those of alternatives.
What happens to a 401(k) loan if you leave your job?
Your plan may require you to repay the remaining balance when your employment ends, or if the plan terminates. Ask the administrator how much time you would have, whether payments can continue, and what happens if you cannot pay. If the unpaid balance is treated as a plan loan offset or distribution, it can have tax consequences.

For certain plan loan offsets connected with severance from employment or plan termination, IRS guidance describes a possible rollover deadline through the due date of your federal income tax return for the year of the offset, including extensions. Whether that rule applies depends on the circumstances. Confirm the reporting and deadline with your plan administrator or a tax professional, and consult the IRS topic on rollovers from retirement plans.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens if you do not repay?
A loan that fails federal limits or repayment requirements can become a deemed distribution. The unpaid amount may be taxable as income to the extent it consists of previously untaxed funds. An additional 10% tax may also apply if you are under 59½ and no exception applies; age and other circumstances can affect that additional tax. The IRS explains these consequences in its guidance on plan loan offsets and tax topic on additional taxes on early distributions. A deemed distribution is a tax treatment, not a reason to assume the loan will be forgiven or that plan-specific collection rules no longer matter.
