It was an all-stock transfer of X to xAI, another Musk-controlled company. Musk valued X at $33 billion, while reports put the combined value of xAI and X at $45 billion including $12 billion in debt. Neither figure is a cash sale to an independent buyer or proof of Musk’s personal return.
The widely repeated €41.8 billion and “874 days” framing appeared in a Daily Galaxy headline published April 28, 2025. It describes a reported March 2025 milestone, not X’s current value; the available reporting does not establish an independently verified transaction for exactly €41.8 billion or its conversion method.
What happened to X after Musk bought Twitter?
Musk completed his acquisition of Twitter in October 2022 for approximately $44 billion, according to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s January 2025 complaint. The purchase price was reported in dollars, so it should not be silently treated as the same figure as the €41.8 billion cited by The Daily Galaxy. SEC complaint
On March 28–29, 2025, xAI acquired X in an all-stock transaction. That moved X into a company Musk also controlled; it was not an outside buyer paying him cash for the social network. The transaction connected X with xAI, but by itself it does not demonstrate that Musk recovered his original investment or earned a profit.

What do the $33 billion and $45 billion figures mean?
They refer to different measures reported for the 2025 transaction, not competing cash offers for X.

Enterprise value includes debt, so it is not interchangeable with equity value. And an all-stock deal measures an exchange between companies, not the cash proceeds an owner would receive from an unrelated buyer. The figures therefore cannot, on their own, answer whether X was worth more or less to Musk than the price he paid for Twitter.

Does the €41.8 billion headline mean Musk got his money back?
No. The Daily Galaxy’s April 28, 2025 headline attributed a €41.8 billion value to X after 874 days. The timing points to the March 2025 xAI transaction, but the sources reviewed do not independently verify a euro-denominated sale or spell out the precise conversion behind that headline figure. Even if a valuation is higher than a purchase price when expressed in a common currency, that comparison alone would not establish a realized return. To assess whether an owner has made money, a reader would need to distinguish an asset’s valuation from cash received, account for debt and other relevant costs, and know whether the valuation came from an independent transaction. The 2025 deal does not supply those answers.

What do X’s reported Irish accounts tell us?
They provide a limited operating snapshot, not consolidated results for all of X. RTÉ reported in May 2026 that X Internet UC’s directors recorded revenue falling from €1.49 billion in 2022 to €1.177 billion in 2023. The directors primarily attributed the advertising decline to reduced spending by large brands amid brand-safety and content-moderation concerns. RTÉ, May 19, 2026
RTÉ also reported that X’s Irish arm declared combined dividends of €682.79 million in 2025 to its immediate parent. A subsidiary dividend is not the same thing as consolidated group profit, X’s market value, or money paid personally to Musk. These figures add context about one part of the business, but do not establish whether the overall company was profitable or whether Musk recovered his purchase cost.

Is there a reliable current valuation for X?
The cited sources do not establish a standalone market value for X as of October 2026. X is privately held, and the March 2025 intra-group stock transaction is not directly comparable to a public-market price or an independent cash sale. The €41.8 billion headline should therefore be treated as historical and attributed, not presented as X’s current value.
