You can pay bills online through your bank or credit union’s bill-pay service, by authorizing a biller to debit your account, or by submitting an ACH payment using your bank-account details. The practical difference is who starts the payment: you, your financial institution acting on your instruction, or the company you authorize. These options can overlap because ACH is a payment network that may carry a bill-pay or biller-initiated transaction.

Compare the three ways to pay bills online

Method Who starts the payment? When it can fit What to check
Bank or credit union online bill pay You instruct your financial institution to send a one-time or recurring payment. You want to manage payments from your bank or credit union’s website or app and choose the amount and schedule. Confirm the payee and delivery date, find out whether the payment will be sent electronically or by paper check, and keep enough money available. CFPB guidance on automatic payments and its explanation of paper checks describe these distinctions.
Biller-initiated automatic debit You authorize a company to withdraw money from your account, usually on a recurring schedule. You have a recurring bill and want the biller to collect it automatically. Verify the company, read and save the authorization terms, monitor the withdrawal—especially if the bill varies—and keep enough money in the account. The CFPB explains automatic debits and their risks.
ACH payment using bank details You provide account and routing details through a service that accepts bank-account payments; the service’s process determines how the payment is initiated. A biller accepts payment from a deposit account and you want to pay electronically. Check the account details, processing time, and any applicable terms. Submission does not guarantee same-day completion. The CFPB explains ACH transactions.

These are practical choices, not three separate payment networks. ACH transfers move money between banks and credit unions, and may be used for a bill payment or an automatic debit. The service you use determines how the payment is set up and who initiates it.

1. Pay through your bank or credit union’s online bill pay

With online bill pay, you use your financial institution’s site or app to select a payee, enter an amount, and choose when to send a payment. You can typically set up a one-time payment or a recurring schedule. You give the instruction to your bank or credit union; the biller does not take the money merely because you enrolled in bill pay.

Check the scheduled delivery date, not just the day you submit the instruction. Most online bill-pay payments are electronic, but some recipients cannot accept electronic payments from individual payers. In those cases, the financial institution may send a paper check, which can take longer to arrive. The CFPB explains why a bill-pay recipient may receive a check.

Allow enough time for the stated delivery method and confirm that the payment reached the account. Cutoff times, delivery estimates, and fees depend on the financial institution and account terms; do not assume every payment is free or immediate.

2. Authorize the biller to debit your account automatically

For automatic debit, you give the company permission to withdraw payments, usually by providing bank-account or debit-card information. The company initiates each withdrawal under the authorization you agreed to. This can help avoid missed due dates, but it does not remove the need to review the bill, monitor transactions, or keep the account funded.

Take extra care with bills that change

A recurring debit may not match the amount you expect if a bill varies. Read the authorization to understand how the amount is determined, review payment notices, and check each withdrawal. For the automatic-debit arrangements it describes, the CFPB says a company must notify you at least 10 days before a scheduled payment when the amount will differ from the authorized amount or range, or from the most recent payment. That notice rule should not be treated as applying to every kind of online payment. See the CFPB’s automatic-payment guidance.

Keep enough money available

If there is not enough money in the account, an automatic debit may be returned. Your bank and the company may assess fees, depending on their terms. Track the account balance and expected withdrawal dates; enrollment does not guarantee that funds will be available when a payment is due.

3. Pay by ACH using your bank-account details

Some billers let you pay by entering your bank account and routing numbers. ACH is the network used to process these transfers between banks and credit unions; it is not a promise of instant payment. An ACH payment may be processed quickly on a business day, but completion can take days, and a debit can be returned for insufficient funds. Check the biller’s stated processing time and submit early enough for the payment to arrive by its due date. The CFPB’s ACH explanation covers processing and return risks.

Before submitting, verify the account and routing details and confirm whether the payment is one-time or recurring. The exact initiation process, any limits, and any fees depend on the biller or service.

How to choose and avoid common problems

  • Choose bank bill pay if you want to initiate payments from your bank or credit union and manage the amount and schedule there. Check whether the recipient will receive an electronic payment or a mailed check.
  • Choose automatic debit if you want a biller to collect a recurring payment. Review the authorization and watch for changes to the amount or withdrawal date.
  • Choose an ACH payment if the biller accepts bank-account payments and you are comfortable providing account details. Allow for processing time rather than relying on same-day completion.
  • For any method, confirm the payee, due date, payment schedule, and delivery or processing estimate. Keep track of pending payments and maintain enough funds to reduce the risk of returned payments and fees.
  • Do not treat a scheduled payment as proof it arrived. Check the payment status and your bill account, particularly when using a service for the first time or when the recipient may receive a paper check.

Fees, cutoff times, and delivery estimates are not universal. Check the current terms from your bank or credit union and the biller before relying on a payment schedule.

How to stop an automatic debit

To stop a biller-initiated automatic debit, contact the company to revoke your authorization, then contact your bank or credit union. A stop-payment order may also be available through your financial institution. Keep records of your request and check whether another scheduled debit is still pending. The CFPB’s instructions for stopping automatic payments explain these steps.
