Bed Bath & Beyond’s 2025 comeback coverage described a goal of 300 new stores over two years and a policy of not opening stores in California. Neither point describes the latest announced footprint: in 2026, Bed Bath & Beyond and The Container Store outlined a co-branded rollout that includes California. The 300-store figure remains a report about the earlier plan, not a confirmed count of openings or a target reaffirmed in the later releases.
What changed after the 2025 headline?
The two parts of the headline came from different kinds of announcements. Contemporary reporting in 2025 described a plan for 300 new stores over two years, excluding California; the official California statement issued at the time did not itself confirm that numerical target. On August 20, 2025, Executive Chairman Marcus Lemonis said, “We will not open or operate retail stores in California.” The company said California customers could continue shopping at BedBathandBeyond.com, with 24–48-hour delivery and, in many cases, same-day service. That was the company’s stated position then, not its later store policy. Bed Bath & Beyond’s August 2025 statement also cautioned that store openings and the geographic footprint were forward-looking matters.
On October 7, 2025, the company announced a national franchise system for neighborhood-format stores selling home, kitchen, storage and organization, and holiday products. The release said franchise documentation was expected within six months; it did not establish how many franchise stores subsequently opened or explain how that plan relates to the later co-branded rollout.
The strategy announced in 2026 was different: rather than treating the earlier figure as a confirmed opening schedule, Bed Bath & Beyond and The Container Store described phased integration of Bed Bath & Beyond products into The Container Store locations, under a co-branded format.

What is the status of the 300-store plan?
The figure of 300 stores over two years was attributed to contemporary business reporting in 2025. The official releases reviewed for the later rollout do not reaffirm that target, and the available information does not establish that 300 stores opened. Treat it as a reported 2025 plan—not a current opening count or a verified 2026 commitment.
The later figures describe a separate initiative. The Container Store said on April 23, 2026, that 98 stores would reset their selling floors for phased product integration. On June 18, Bed Bath & Beyond announced phase one of the co-branded format across 22 markets, with more locations to follow. The 98-store figure is a planned transition across The Container Store fleet; the 22-market figure refers to the announced first phase. Neither should be presented as a count of fully converted stores unless current location-level information confirms completion.

Is Bed Bath & Beyond returning to California?
Yes, California appears in the later announced footprint, reversing the August 2025 statement that the company would not operate stores there. The Container Store’s April 2026 conversion list named planned co-branded locations in Los Angeles, Corte Madera, Palo Alto, Sacramento, San Diego, El Segundo, San Francisco, San Jose, San Mateo, Costa Mesa, Walnut Creek, and Woodland Hills. Bed Bath & Beyond’s June phase-one announcement separately named Costa Mesa and Century City in Los Angeles.
These announcements establish planned locations and phase-one markets, not that every listed store has completed its conversion or is currently operating in the final format. Store status can change by location. Check the Bed Bath & Beyond store locator before making a trip or relying on a particular service.

How will the co-branded stores differ?
The announced format combines Bed Bath & Beyond household merchandise with The Container Store’s storage and organization offering. Bed Bath & Beyond says the assortment includes bedding, bath, kitchen, entertaining, and home essentials. The Container Store contributes storage products, custom closets, design, and installation services.
Bed Bath & Beyond has also described expanding Beyond Home Services into cabinetry, flooring, installation, and other home-improvement solutions. Those are announced capabilities, not confirmation that every service is available at every store; check local availability before planning a project. In the rollout announcement, Bed Bath & Beyond President Amy Sullivan described the goal as allowing customers to “shop for a dorm room, organize a pantry, redesign a closet, refresh a bedroom or complete an entire home project in one visit.”

What do the latest company results say—and not say?
Bed Bath & Beyond reported $361 million in net revenue for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, up 28.0% year over year. Its August 4, 2026, results also reported 6.4 million active customers and 2.8 million delivered orders. These are company-wide figures; they do not disclose store-level profitability or demonstrate that the co-branded format has succeeded.
