No evidence shows Nissan changed its CEO to revive a Honda merger. Nissan named Ivan Espinosa to succeed Makoto Uchida in March 2025, after Nissan and Honda had already ended their discussions about corporate integration. The companies continued cooperating on specific projects, but that is not the same as an active merger plan.
What happened to Nissan’s CEO?
On March 11, 2025, Nissan announced that Ivan Espinosa, then its chief planning officer, would become president and CEO on April 1, succeeding Makoto Uchida. Nissan’s announcement described a leadership succession; it did not say the appointment was intended to restart or preserve a merger with Honda.
Nissan’s leadership page, dated June 24, 2026, listed Espinosa as CEO. The roster is the latest direct leadership listing available here, but it predates a later management announcement.
Had Nissan and Honda already ended their merger discussions?
Yes. Nissan and Honda signed a memorandum of understanding on December 23, 2024, to consider business integration, initially involving a joint holding company. On February 13, 2025, they announced that they were terminating the memorandum and discontinuing consideration of integration. Their joint announcement said the companies had concluded termination was more appropriate so they could prioritize decision speed and execution amid rapid market change.

The companies also differed over governance. Honda had proposed changing the concept to a parent-subsidiary structure, with Honda as parent and Nissan as subsidiary. That proposal was part of the discussions that ended; it does not establish that a merger remained in progress after February 2025.
Does later cooperation mean the merger is back on?
No. Nissan and Honda said they would continue a strategic partnership after ending integration discussions. Their later cooperation is project-based: on August 31, 2026, the Associated Press reported that they had agreed to jointly develop vehicle computer components and software for vehicles expected to reach the market in fiscal 2029. That agreement concerns technical development, not shared ownership or a combined corporate structure.

That distinction matters: integration would involve a corporate arrangement affecting control or ownership, while a development agreement is cooperation on defined work between separate companies. The announced software collaboration is not evidence that Nissan and Honda revived merger negotiations.

Nissan’s executive-management news channel lists a senior-management announcement dated September 18, 2026, with changes effective October 1. The available listing does not provide the detailed changes, so it does not establish whether the CEO changed. Nissan’s June 24 leadership roster predates that effective date. Without the full notice or another direct source, it would be inaccurate to say Espinosa was replaced in October—or to link any such change to a plan to revive the Honda merger.
