Before you place an Amazon order, check more than the listed price and star rating. Compare the full cost, read concrete reviews, confirm the seller and return terms, and verify unexpected account or payment messages through Amazon’s app or website—not through a link in the message. These U.S.-focused checks can reduce common shopping risks, but none guarantees a safe or suitable purchase.
1. Buying before you know your budget and the full cost
Set a spending limit before browsing, then compare the item’s total cost rather than just its displayed price. Delivery charges and add-ons can change what you pay. Decide which features are essential, too, so a low price or an attractive extra does not pull you toward a product that is a poor fit. The FTC recommends planning and comparison shopping before buying: FTC online-shopping security tips.

- Compare the same item across sellers or sites, including delivery costs.
- Separate must-have features from optional ones.
- Check the final amount before placing the order.
2. Treating a high rating as proof
A star score is a quick summary, not proof that a product is genuine, reliable, or right for you. The FTC warns that some online reviews are fake or not completely honest, and shoppers may not know whether a reviewer received a free product. Read several reviews and look for specific descriptions of quality and performance. Expert reviews can provide another perspective, but the product still has to meet your needs.

- Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
- Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
3. Skipping seller, shipping, and return terms
Do not assume every listing has the same seller, delivery estimate, or return options. Before you buy, check who is selling the item, when it is expected to ship, whether returns are allowed, whether a refund is available, and who would pay return shipping. These details can matter as much as the price if the order arrives late or does not work out. The FTC’s online-shopping guidance recommends checking shipping and return information before purchase.
4. Following urgent messages, links, or payment demands
An unexpected email, text, or call about an Amazon order, account problem, or recall may imitate a real company message. Do not use its link or rely on its phone number to investigate. Open Amazon’s website or app yourself and check your account and order history. Amazon says it will not ask customers to pay by phone or email or to buy gift cards for a transaction; its scam-prevention guidance explains ways to recognize suspicious contact.

Be especially wary of unexpected refund texts. The FTC warns that messages offering refunds for Amazon purchases can be phishing attempts; verify any issue through your account directly rather than following the message’s link. See the FTC’s July 2025 alert about refund texts and its guidance on Amazon impersonators.
5. Accepting a recurring offer without checking its terms
Before accepting Prime or another recurring offer, make sure you intend to enroll and understand the renewal and cancellation terms. Read the current terms shown during signup; do not assume they are identical across offers or unchanged over time.

In June 2023, the FTC announced a complaint alleging that Amazon enrolled consumers in Prime without their consent and made cancellation difficult. Those statements were allegations in the complaint, not a court finding established by that press release, and they do not establish that the same enrollment flow is current. Read the FTC’s June 2023 announcement.
6. Entering payment details without basic security checks
When possible, consider paying by credit card because your card may offer a way to dispute a charge. Before entering financial information, check that the website address begins with “https.” These are precautions, not proof that a website or transaction is legitimate; an encrypted connection does not verify who is behind a site. The FTC covers these steps in its online-shopping security tips.

A note on scam statistics
Amazon reported that 28% of scam reports it received globally in 2025 involving impersonation attempts concerned attempts to access customer accounts. This is company-reported data, not an independently verified estimate of all scams or shoppers. Use it as context for why account-related messages deserve caution, not as a measure of your personal odds of encountering fraud.
