There is no single buy now, pay later app that is best for everyone. Compare the offer shown at checkout by its APR and total repayment amount, fees, due dates, merchant and state eligibility, and what happens if a payment is missed. As of October 7, 2026, current U.S. provider pages support a comparison of Affirm, Afterpay, and PayPal; Klarna, Sezzle, and Zip are included as major providers in CFPB research, but their current terms are not established here. The original eight services and ranking criteria implied by the 2024 title are not identified, so a reliable list of eight ranked services cannot be reconstructed.
How buy now, pay later works
Buy now, pay later (BNPL) lets a shopper receive a purchase while paying over time. Pay-in-four usually splits the cost into four equal payments over six weeks, often with the first payment due at checkout. Longer monthly financing is a different product: it may run for months and charge interest. The Federal Reserve describes BNPL as giving consumers immediate access to a good or service while spreading out its cost “without incurring the additional interest or fees if the terms are met.” Federal Reserve, August 2026; CFPB, January 2025.
“Interest-free” is not the same as risk-free or universally fee-free. The exact plan, eligibility decision, merchant, state, and payment outcome can change the cost. Review the offer and loan agreement before accepting it.

How to choose an offer
- Compare the total cost. Check the APR and total repayment amount shown for your exact purchase, not just a headline claim such as “interest-free.” Determine whether the offer includes a finance fee, down payment, or other charge.
- Map the payment dates to your budget. Note the amount due today and every later due date. Confirm whether autopay is on, which payment method will be charged, and whether you can change it.
- Check where and what you can buy. Confirm that the merchant, product, purchase amount, and your state qualify for that particular plan. An app’s general availability does not guarantee a plan at every checkout.
- Read the missed-payment and return terms. Check late-payment charges, bank overdraft or returned-payment exposure, how refunds or disputes are handled, and whether missed payments can affect credit or go to collections.
What can go wrong with BNPL
The CFPB says many BNPL loans do not charge interest, but most charge late fees. If an automated repayment reaches a bank account without enough funds, the bank may also charge an overdraft or nonsufficient-funds fee. Delinquency may block future BNPL use; an unpaid account may be sent to collections, and reported missed payments may affect credit history or scores. Check both the BNPL loan contract and the terms of the linked bank account. CFPB guidance on missed BNPL payments.
Why overlapping plans deserve attention
Several small installments can become difficult to track when their due dates overlap. In the CFPB’s study of six BNPL firms, using data from 2022, 63% of borrowers had multiple simultaneous loans at some point, and 33% had simultaneous loans across multiple firms. The report also found that borrowers averaged 9.5 originations in 2022, up from 8.5 in 2021; about 20% were heavy users, averaging more than one BNPL loan per month in 2022, compared with 18% in 2021. These are historical study results, not estimates of use in 2026. CFPB, January 2025.

The same CFPB report found that 21% of consumers with a credit record used at least one of the six studied firms in 2022. Its average approval rates across credit-score categories were 67% in 2020, 78% in 2021, and 79% in 2022, counting counteroffers. Those study-wide historical figures do not predict an individual applicant’s current approval odds.

The CFPB’s BNPL resource page records that on May 12, 2025, the bureau withdrew several guidance documents, including its 2024 BNPL Interpretive Rule. That documented withdrawal does not establish that no other consumer protections apply. CFPB BNPL resource page.
