Fundraising Ideas: How to Choose the Right Campaign for Your Group

There is no single best fundraiser. Find options for schools, nonprofits, and community groups, then choose a campaign that fits your audience, timeline, budget, and volunteers.

There is no universally best fundraiser. The right choice depends on who is likely to give, how soon you need to launch, what you can spend, and how many people can help. Use the ideas below as a practical menu—not a ranking or a promise of results—and choose a format your group can realistically run.

How to choose a fundraiser that fits

Before settling on an idea, write down your goal amount, deadline, likely audience, available budget, and the people who can do the work. Then ask how supporters are most likely to participate: attend an event, buy something, share a personal fundraising page, pledge activity, or respond to a direct online ask.

A fundraiser is one activity; a fundraising strategy coordinates goals, audiences, calendars, budgets, and campaigns across the year. A gala may suit an organization with event capacity and sponsor relationships, while a small team may be better served by an online appeal or bake sale. Neither format guarantees a particular return. CharityAuctions’ fundraising guide, updated August 2026, recommends matching the format to the group’s resources.

  • Audience: Are your likely donors nearby, connected to a school or workplace, or spread across participants’ personal networks?
  • Time: How quickly must the campaign launch, and is there enough lead time for permits, donated items, sponsors, or participant recruitment?
  • Cost and capacity: What expenses come before donations arrive, and who will handle setup, promotion, payments, and follow-up?
  • Dependencies: Does the idea rely on donated goods, a venue, a business partner, or supporters willing to ask their own contacts?

Fundraising ideas by format

The ideas below are examples recommended in the cited fundraising guides. Their suitability depends on local circumstances; the sources do not establish a universal ranking or comparative revenue results.

Simple, low-cost, and community fundraisers

  • Bake sale: A familiar option for a school, community group, or event with a place to sell. Start by confirming the location, food-handling requirements, and who can contribute baked goods.
  • Car wash: Can suit a group with volunteers and access to an appropriate site. Check permission, water access, supplies, and weather backup before announcing a date.
  • Yard sale: A practical fit when supporters can donate usable items and volunteers can sort, price, and staff the sale. Arrange collection and a plan for unsold goods first.
  • Penny wars: Teams compete to collect coins, often with a simple scoring rule. Set the rules and collection window, and choose a secure way to count and store contributions.
  • Trivia night: A community gathering that needs questions, a host, a venue, and a clear way to collect entry fees or donations. Confirm venue costs before setting a ticket price.
  • Coffee morning: A smaller social event that may work for an existing community or supporter group. Secure a venue and refreshments, and make the donation request easy to understand.
  • Social media challenge: Invite participants to complete and share a defined activity or prompt. Keep the action simple, explain how to donate, and give supporters a ready-to-share message.

Schools and youth groups

  • Flat-pledge walkathon: Participants collect donations for taking part, rather than requiring donors to calculate each lap or mile. Set a safe route, define the pledge process, and provide a clear collection deadline.
  • Readathon: Participants seek pledges tied to reading or a reading goal. Choose a manageable period, explain how progress will be recorded, and make it easy for families to share the appeal.
  • Bike-a-thon: A participation fundraiser built around a bike ride or distance challenge. Plan the route, safety arrangements, and participant pledge pages before promotion.
  • Spirit wear: Sell clothing or other items associated with a school or group. Confirm designs, order quantities, production costs, and delivery timing before collecting orders.
  • Concession sales: Sell food or drinks at an event where attendees are already gathering. Check venue rules and supply costs, then assign people to sales and cleanup.

Events and shared experiences

  • Community dinner: Bring supporters together for a meal and a direct donation appeal. Decide whether food is donated or purchased, and calculate costs before setting ticket or donation amounts.
  • Themed event: Give a gathering a recognizable theme to help shape its activities and promotion. Choose a theme that fits the audience and does not require costly decorations or entertainment.
  • Golf outing: A larger event that can combine participation fees and sponsorships. It requires a suitable course, event coordination, and enough lead time to recruit players and sponsors.
  • Gala with a paddle raise: A formal event can include a live appeal in which attendees indicate a donation amount. This calls for event capacity, a clear giving script, and a plan for recording pledges.
  • Poker night: A social event that requires a venue, hosts, and rules appropriate to the location. Check local requirements before choosing this format; the cited guides do not provide jurisdiction-specific legal guidance.
  • Tricky tray: Attendees purchase chances to win donated items. It depends on securing appealing contributions and organizing entries and prize handling; check local rules for any applicable requirements.

Online and peer-to-peer fundraising

Peer-to-peer fundraising lets supporters ask their own networks to give. GoFundMe Pro’s peer-to-peer guide describes birthday and memorial campaigns, personal challenges, livestreams, walks, and readathons as possible formats.

  • Online giving page: A straightforward option for a direct appeal. State what the campaign supports, make the donation steps clear, and share the page through channels your audience uses.
  • Crowdfunding: Invite a wider group to contribute toward a defined need or goal. Use a specific explanation of why the funds are needed and how to donate.
  • Birthday or memorial fundraiser: A supporter directs friends and family to give in honor of a person or occasion. Provide a concise story and a shareable donation link.
  • Fitness or personal challenge: A participant takes on a defined activity and asks others to support the cause. Choose a realistic challenge and an easy way to follow progress.
  • Livestream fundraiser: Combine a live online activity with a donation ask. Plan the content, test the donation link, and tell viewers when and how to contribute.
  • Pledge-per-mile hike or bike ride: Participants invite pledges linked to distance completed. Set a route or distance, establish how it will be reported, and provide a simple pledge page.

For a peer-to-peer campaign, give participants an authentic story frame: why they care, why now, and how others can help. Make sharing straightforward with a link and suggested copy. GoFundMe Pro advises planning six to eight weeks ahead; treat that as its guidance, not a universal minimum. Where available, organizers can track active fundraisers, average raised per supporter, sharing activity, and conversion rates.

Seasonal and mission-linked campaigns

  • GivingTuesday or year-end appeal: Use a giving moment to make a focused donation request. Set a clear goal and campaign window, and avoid relying on the date alone to explain why the cause matters.
  • Holiday auction: Pair a seasonal campaign with donated items and an auction. Secure contributions early and plan how buyers will pay and receive items.
  • Spring event: A seasonal gathering can make sense when the weather and audience suit an outdoor or community event. Choose a date and venue that leave time for promotion and contingency planning.
  • Awareness-month campaign: Connect an appeal to a month relevant to the mission. Explain the connection clearly and give supporters a specific action beyond simply sharing a date.
  • Earth Day cleanup campaign: Combine a community cleanup with a donation or pledge ask. Identify the cleanup location, supplies, and any permissions needed before inviting participants.
  • Back-to-school drive: Collect donations or supplies around a school-year need. Specify what is needed, how it will be delivered, and the deadline for contributions.

Workplace and sponsor-led fundraisers

  • Sponsor tiers: Offer businesses defined levels of event or campaign support. State what each level includes and ensure the promised recognition is manageable.
  • In-kind donations: Ask businesses or individuals to contribute goods or services rather than cash. Identify concrete needs and arrange collection, storage, and acknowledgment.
  • Employee matching gifts: Invite donors to check whether their employer matches eligible donations. Explain how to find the employer’s process; eligibility and terms depend on the workplace.
  • Volunteer grants: Some employers offer charitable support connected to employees’ volunteer service. Ask volunteers to check their employer’s policy and any documentation requirements.
  • Dine-for-a-cause event: A restaurant partners with a group for a designated event or period. Confirm in writing how the contribution is calculated and what promotion each side will provide.

Auctions, sales, and raffles

  • Small silent auction of donated goods: A manageable option when supporters can provide a few appealing items. Set clear bidding and payment procedures and arrange how winners collect items.
  • Online auction: Extend bidding beyond an in-person event, but plan item descriptions, bidding rules, payment collection, and delivery or pickup.
  • Food sale: Sell food at a gathering or through preorders. Check applicable food rules and calculate ingredient, packaging, and delivery costs.
  • 50/50 raffle: Raffle proceeds are split between the winner and the organization under the stated format. Raffle rules vary by location, so check local requirements before selling tickets; the cited sources do not supply legal guidance for specific jurisdictions.

How to plan and run the campaign

CharityAuctions outlines a six-step process for organizing a fundraiser. Adapt the sequence to the format and your local requirements.

  1. Set the goal and date. Decide what the campaign is meant to raise and when it will end or take place.
  2. Choose the format. Match the activity to the audience, timeline, budget, and available volunteers.
  3. Assign people and tasks. Give someone responsibility for coordination, promotion, money handling, and participant or donor questions.
  4. Secure what the format depends on. Obtain donated items, sponsors, a venue, or participant pledge pages before making promises publicly.
  5. Set up the tools and promote. Test donation or payment steps, explain the purpose and deadline, and give supporters materials they can share.
  6. Run the fundraiser and follow through. Collect payments, thank donors, and share the outcome. CharityAuctions recommends thanking donors within 48 hours.

Published numbers can describe a platform’s users or a particular set of campaigns, but they should not be treated as a forecast for a new fundraiser.

  • Each double stub raffle tickets measures 2x2 inches and split Into 2 X 1 inch halves.

  • With a deposit ticket and keep ticket
  • Perfect for a wide range of events including carnivals, school fundraisers, class rewards, and prize drawings.
  • CharityAuctions reports that mobile-bidding charity auctions raise 43% more per event than paper-based formats. This is platform-reported data on its page updated August 2026, not an independently verified uplift that every organization should expect.
  • GoFundMe Pro reports that America’s top 30 peer-to-peer programs raised $1.17 billion in 2025, up 3.4% year over year, with 2.63 million participants, up 3.6%. Those totals describe the programs in that report, not a typical campaign.
  • GoFundMe Pro reports, citing NonProfit PRO, that 77% of peer-to-peer donors were new to an organization, compared with 56% of donors through other campaign types. The statistic is reported through GoFundMe Pro; it is not a guarantee that peer-to-peer fundraising will bring a particular group new donors.

These figures use different datasets and should not be combined into an estimate of likely proceeds. The cited sources are fundraising-platform or vendor-published guides, not controlled head-to-head tests of every method. No universal comparison establishes which format produces the most net revenue across organizations.

Natalie Stamer, Co-Owner and Managing Partner of Streetlight Digital, offers this perspective in GoFundMe Pro’s article: “Community fundraising programs shouldn’t be measured only by immediate ROI. Their greatest value is in how they grow your donor base and create a new wave of loyal giving over time.” This is an attributed practitioner opinion, not a research conclusion.
