OAG’s March 18, 2025 schedule analysis estimated that U.S. airlines would offer about 730 million scheduled seats during IATA Summer 2025, up 1.7% year over year. That is a forward-looking schedule estimate—not a final count of seats flown—and it does not verify the headline figure of 727 million. OAG identified American Airlines as the largest U.S. airline by planned seats, at nearly 158 million.
How many seats were U.S. airlines scheduled to offer in summer 2025?
OAG estimated about 730 million scheduled seats in the U.S. market for IATA Summer 2025, with year-over-year growth of 1.7%. The analysis was published on March 18, 2025, before the season began. It describes planned capacity, not an audited count of seats that airlines ultimately flew. OAG’s separate estimate for all of North America was about 793 million scheduled seats, up 2% year over year; that regional figure should not be mistaken for the U.S. total. OAG’s seasonal capacity analysis.
The 727 million figure in the original headline is not established by the reviewed OAG source. It may reflect a different schedule snapshot or scope, but the available figures do not identify its origin. The supported wording is “about 730 million scheduled seats” for the U.S. summer schedule estimate.
Which U.S. airline had the most planned seats?
American Airlines led OAG’s Summer 2025 U.S. ranking by planned seat capacity, with nearly 158 million scheduled seats. OAG’s seasonal analysis also highlighted United’s growth: United added 8.3 million domestic seats, an 8.3% increase, and just over one million international seats compared with the prior year. These are seasonal schedule comparisons, not full-year operating totals. OAG’s seasonal capacity analysis.

What drove U.S. capacity growth?
OAG reported that domestic markets accounted for 84% of North American capacity growth, equivalent to 937,000 seats; the U.S. domestic market grew 1% year over year. The 84% share and 937,000-seat increase describe North American capacity growth, while the 1% figure describes domestic market growth year over year. OAG cited supply-chain challenges and airline capacity discipline as context for relatively modest expansion. OAG’s analysis of U.S. and North American capacity growth.
How do the largest U.S. airlines compare over calendar year 2025?
OAG’s retrospective full-calendar-year ranking is a different measure from its pre-season Summer 2025 schedule estimate. By seats operated, American ranked first among the listed U.S. carriers, followed by Delta, Southwest and United. These annual figures cover January through December 2025 and should not be used as a substitute for summer-only planned capacity.

Seat count measures how many places are offered. Available seat kilometres (ASK) also accounts for how far those seats travel, so an airline flying longer routes can rank differently. Flight count measures departures, not the number of seats or the distance flown. OAG’s full-year 2025 rankings show different leaders depending on the measure:

| Metric | Leading airline in OAG’s 2025 ranking | Reported value |
|---|---|---|
| Seats operated | American Airlines | 279.6 million |
| Available seat kilometres | United Airlines | 536.5 billion |
| Flights | American Airlines | 2.3 million |
The values are OAG’s retrospective calendar-year 2025 figures. OAG’s annual ranking lists the seat and flight totals; its capacity ranking by available seat kilometres gives the ASK comparison.
So “biggest” needs a qualifier: American led both the planned Summer 2025 U.S. seat count and OAG’s full-year U.S. seats-operated ranking. United led OAG’s full-year ranking by available seat kilometres, while American led by flight count. The seasonal and annual rankings answer different questions and cover different periods.
