This is a retrospective guide to seven crypto projects discussed in the context of 2024—not a current-market ranking or investment recommendation. The names refer to different things: some are networks or projects, while BTC, ETH, SOL, ADA, BNB, DOT, and BDAG are their associated assets. Their purposes, token functions, maturity, and available evidence are not interchangeable.
How to read this 2024 crypto watchlist
A “coin to watch” is not necessarily a good investment. A useful comparison asks what a project is for, how its network is secured when that information is established, what its asset does, and how strong the evidence is for claims about it. None of those factors predicts an asset’s price.
Binance Research’s Half-Year Report 2024, published July 16, 2024, said the crypto market ended the first half at about US$2.27 trillion, up 37.3% year to date; it reported a 60.2% increase in the first quarter and a 14.3% decline in the second quarter. Those figures describe that report’s period, not current market conditions or a forecast. The report also covered the Bitcoin halving and U.S. spot ETF approvals, Ethereum restaking and EIP-4844, BNB Chain work on opBNB and Greenfield, and Solana memecoin activity and blinks. | Project and asset | What the cited sources establish | Asset role established here |
|---|---|---|
| BlockDAG / BDAG | BlockDAG’s documentation describes its ecosystem and network functions. Its April 8, 2024 developer release named PHANTOM as the team’s initial consensus focus. | Transactions, smart-contract execution, and network security, according to BlockDAG’s documentation. |
| Bitcoin / BTC | A peer-to-peer electronic cash system; Ethereum.org describes a narrower peer-to-peer payment focus and a fixed 21 million coin supply. | Bitcoin’s payment-oriented asset; a fixed supply does not guarantee a stable price or appreciation. |
| Ethereum / ETH | Programmable infrastructure for applications; Ethereum.org says it moved from proof of work to proof of stake in 2022. | Transaction costs and validator staking, according to Ethereum.org. |
| Solana / SOL | Solana’s documentation provides resources for building projects on its platform. | Not stated in the cited Solana documentation. |
| Cardano / ADA | Cardano documentation describes Ouroboros as a proof-of-stake consensus protocol. | The cited consensus page describes stake pools and stake but does not specify ADA’s other functions. |
| BNB Chain / BNB | BNB Smart Chain supports EVM-compatible smart contracts and describes a 45-validator active set using Proof of Staked Authority. | Gas for smart-contract execution and a staking token, according to BNB Chain documentation. |
| Polkadot / DOT | The cited Polkadot Wiki page identifies DOT with Polkadot; it does not establish detailed architecture claims here. | Specific functions are not stated in the cited page. |
“Binance Coin” remains in the title for recognition; current BNB Chain documentation calls the asset BNB. The entries below explain what can—and cannot—be concluded from the cited material.

What are the seven crypto projects?
BlockDAG (BDAG)
BlockDAG’s current documentation describes BDAG as the ecosystem’s native cryptocurrency, used for transactions, smart-contract execution, and network security. Those are the project’s stated uses; the documentation by itself does not establish adoption, decentralization, realized throughput, or security performance. BlockDAG’s BDAG documentation.
For 2024 context, BlockDAG’s April 8 developer release said its initial consensus focus would be the PHANTOM protocol and noted that the releases were its first developer releases. That is evidence of how the project described its development at that date, not proof of a completed or independently validated implementation. BlockDAG developer release 4.
Bitcoin (BTC)
Bitcoin’s founding paper is titled Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System; Bitcoin.org describes it as the paper that first introduced Bitcoin. Ethereum.org contrasts Bitcoin’s narrower peer-to-peer payment focus with programmable application platforms and describes a fixed supply of 21 million coins. A supply cap is a property of the asset, not a promise about price stability or future returns. Bitcoin.org’s white paper page.

Binance Research’s 2024 report discussed the fourth Bitcoin halving and U.S. spot ETF approvals as first-half developments. These are historical events, not evidence that BTC will rise or fall in value.
Ethereum (ETH)
Ethereum is programmable infrastructure for applications. Ethereum.org gives lending, stablecoins, collectibles, social applications, and payments as examples. ETH pays transaction costs and is locked by validators under the network’s proof-of-stake system. Ethereum.org says the transition from proof of work to proof of stake took place in 2022. Ethereum.org’s Ethereum overview.
For the first half of 2024, Binance Research noted restaking activity and EIP-4844. These dated developments help explain what was being discussed about Ethereum in that period; they do not establish current activity levels or investment value.

Solana (SOL)
The cited Solana documentation establishes that Solana provides developer resources and a platform for building projects, but it does not establish the network’s consensus details, throughput, fees, or SOL’s token functions for this comparison. Solana’s documentation.
Binance Research’s 2024 report recorded memecoin activity and the launch of “blinks” as first-half observations. Treat them as period-specific examples, not timeless descriptions of the network or measures of its long-term prospects.
Cardano (ADA)
Cardano documentation describes Ouroboros as a proof-of-stake protocol in which stake pools create blocks based on stake they control. It divides time into epochs and slots. The documentation’s security statement is conditional: under a synchronous setting, it gives a guarantee when more than 51% of stake is held by honest participants. That is not an unconditional promise of security in every circumstance. Cardano’s consensus explanation.

BNB Chain and BNB
BNB Smart Chain supports EVM-compatible smart contracts. Its documentation describes an active set of 45 validators using Proof of Staked Authority, with BNB serving as gas for smart-contract execution and as a staking token. The validator count and network details are documentation statements, not a basis for comparing security or decentralization across projects. BNB Smart Chain documentation.
Binance Research reported work on opBNB and Greenfield during the first half of 2024. Those are dated ecosystem developments; the report does not make them evidence of a particular future return.
Polkadot (DOT)
DOT is the asset associated with Polkadot. The cited Polkadot Wiki page on DOT does not establish enough detail here to describe its current token functions or make specific claims about staking, governance, supply, or network architecture. That narrower description is preferable to filling gaps with assumptions.

What is the difference between Bitcoin and Ethereum?
The clearest source-backed distinction is purpose. Bitcoin’s cited description centers on peer-to-peer electronic cash and payments. Ethereum is programmable infrastructure on which applications—including lending, stablecoins, collectibles, social products, and payments—can operate. Their associated assets also have different stated roles: ETH pays transaction costs and is staked by validators, while the cited comparison describes Bitcoin’s narrower payment focus and capped supply.
This distinction does not make one asset categorically safer or better. A payment-oriented design and a programmable application platform expose users to different network and application considerations; neither description supplies a price forecast.
Which projects in this list use proof of stake?
The cited sources explicitly identify Ethereum and Cardano as proof-of-stake systems. BNB Smart Chain describes its validator model as Proof of Staked Authority, a distinct named model that includes staking. The sources used here do not support a comparable consensus description for BlockDAG, Solana, or Polkadot, so those projects should not be classified from this evidence. Bitcoin’s consensus model is also outside the claims established by the cited material in this comparison.
How to compare the seven without treating a watchlist as advice
- Purpose: Separate payment-oriented assets from platforms designed for programmable applications, and do not assume every project serves the same need.
- Security claims: Check whether a consensus description comes from project documentation, what assumptions it makes, and whether a claimed design is implemented rather than planned.
- Token utility: Distinguish a stated network function from evidence that people use the asset for that function at meaningful scale.
- Evidence and maturity: Give more weight to claims supported by specific documentation and dated implementation evidence than to broad promotional descriptions. BlockDAG’s April 2024 release, for example, characterized its consensus work as an initial focus.
- 2024 events versus current conditions: Historical milestones and market figures explain the period named in the title; they do not describe October 2026 prices or present-day adoption.
- Personal risk: Crypto assets can be volatile, and this comparison does not assess an individual’s time horizon, financial position, or ability to absorb losses.
The available sources do not establish a consistent basis for ranking these seven by speed, fees, decentralization, market capitalization, or likely returns. A watchlist can help frame further research, but it is not a substitute for checking current official documentation and independently evaluating financial risk.
