The best place to buy a PC game depends on the title, your country, the checkout price and how the game is redeemed. Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Green Man Gaming, Humble Store, Fanatical and Ubisoft Store are seven useful places to compare—not a verified ranking. Check the exact product and current terms before paying; a discount is only a saving if the game works with the account and platform you intend to use.
How to choose a PC game store
Compare the same game across stores and look beyond the sale badge. Catalogs, product access and payment options can vary by region, and a retailer may sell a key for another platform rather than add a game directly to its own launcher. Prices were not compared title by title here, so no store is named as the cheapest.
- Availability: Confirm the game is sold in your country and that its edition is the one you want.
- Final cost: Compare the local checkout total, including any payment-provider conversion costs. Epic says regional pricing and payment options vary by region.
- Redemption and access: Check whether the purchase is a direct store-library addition or a key to activate elsewhere. Read the product page for launcher, account and DRM requirements; do not assume every game in a store follows one rule.
- Refund eligibility: Read the policy before purchase, especially for keys. Store rules differ, and applicable local consumer rights may also matter.
- Retailer authorization: For a third-party seller, check the game publisher’s approved-distributor information where available. An authorized seller for one publisher’s games is not automatically authorized for every publisher.
Seven stores worth comparing
Steam: a broad baseline for direct purchases
Steam is a useful starting point for comparing availability and price. Valve says most products bought directly through Steam have no region restrictions, with exceptions. Its refund policy says eligible games generally qualify for a refund request within 14 days of purchase if they have been played for less than two hours. Valve’s page, last updated April 23, 2024, also says purchases made outside Steam, such as third-party CD keys, cannot be refunded by Steam. Read Steam’s refund policy and check Steam’s region information.
Epic Games Store: regional pricing and claimed free games
Epic says its store supports PC and Mac worldwide subject to legal restrictions, with regional pricing in more than 190 countries and over 30 territories. Once claimed, a free game remains in the user’s library after its free offer ends. Eligible PC and Mac purchases marked “refundable” or “self-refundable” generally qualify for a refund within 14 days if runtime is under two hours; exclusions apply. Check the live product listing and Epic’s refund information before buying.

GOG: check the individual game’s DRM details
GOG lists PC games, new releases, bestsellers and sales, and its storefront brands itself around DRM-free PC games. That branding does not establish that every title has identical DRM conditions. Review the specific product page for the game’s requirements and access details before purchase. Browse the GOG store.
Green Man Gaming: a third-party retailer with publisher-specific approval
Green Man Gaming is a third-party retailer listed by Ubisoft among distributors with a digital distribution agreement for Ubisoft games. That is relevant evidence for Ubisoft titles, not a blanket authorization for every publisher’s catalog. Green Man Gaming’s general policy describes refunds or store credit as discretionary and handled case by case. Its stated general conditions include requesting within seven days of purchase, not activating or downloading the game, and not revealing the key; the policy discusses EU withdrawal rights separately. Read Green Man Gaming’s refund policy before disclosing or redeeming a key.

Humble Store: compare the exact listing and terms
Humble Store is another candidate to check when comparing a specific PC game. Current catalog details, regional restrictions and refund conditions are not established here, so verify the official product listing and terms rather than assuming a particular game, discount, redemption platform or refund option is available.
Fanatical: verify availability and redemption before checkout
Fanatical is also worth checking for the particular title you want. Its current catalog, regional restrictions and refund rules are not established here. Confirm the exact edition, where its key activates, and the current official terms before paying.

Ubisoft Store: a direct option for Ubisoft games
For a Ubisoft-published game, Ubisoft recommends buying directly from the Ubisoft Store or Ubisoft Connect PC, or from a distributor with a digital distribution agreement. The company warns that keys from unauthorized sellers may be invalid or revoked and publishes an approved-distributor list that includes Green Man Gaming, Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG and Gamesplanet. This approval applies to Ubisoft games; check other publishers’ guidance for their titles. Ubisoft’s official help information summarizes a digital PC game refund window of 14 days and no more than two hours played, subject to policy conditions. Confirm the current policy for your region. See Ubisoft’s approved digital distributors and check its digital-purchase refund information.

A key can be tied to a particular platform, region or edition, and its refund route may differ from that of a direct purchase. Steam explicitly says it cannot refund purchases made outside Steam. Green Man Gaming’s policy makes disclosure, activation and download relevant to its general refund conditions. For Ubisoft games, Ubisoft says unauthorized keys may be invalid or revoked. Before buying from any third-party retailer, look for the publisher’s own approved-seller information and confirm the exact key’s region and redemption platform.

- Read the relevant refund rules before buying; for a key, do so before revealing or activating it.
- If buying from a third party, verify publisher authorization for that publisher’s games.
