In ESA’s 2024 report, 61% of Americans ages 5–90—about 190.6 million people—said they played video games for at least one hour each week. ESA’s newer 2026 report puts the figure at 67%, or 212.3 million people, using the same stated age range and weekly threshold. These are report-year estimates, not a current head count or a measure of how many Americans own games or gaming devices.

What percentage of Americans play video games?

The title figure comes from the Entertainment Software Association’s 2024 Essential Facts About the U.S. Video Game Industry report: 61%, approximately 190.6 million Americans ages 5–90, played video games at least one hour per week in the United States. ESA’s May 16, 2024 announcement describes the result and its weekly threshold.

That number is specific to the 2024 report. It does not mean 61% played every day, that they owned a console, or that they bought a game. It also does not describe adults alone: the reported age range begins at 5 and ends at 90.

How many Americans play every week now?

ESA’s June 3, 2026 announcement reports that 67%, or 212.3 million Americans ages 5–90, play video games one or more hours each week. ESA says this later report was conducted in partnership with YouGov.

2024 61%; approximately 190.6 million 5–90 At least one hour each week Children ages 5–17 were included in the quantitative data for the first time.
2026 67%; 212.3 million 5–90 One or more hours weekly ESA says the report was conducted in partnership with YouGov.

The figures show a difference between annual report estimates, but they do not by themselves establish why the estimates differ or prove that the underlying methods are directly comparable. ESA’s 2024 release does not provide the full survey methodology, such as sampling frame, weighting, confidence interval, or questionnaire details. The 2026 release names YouGov but does not provide all of those specifications in its announcement either. Treat the counts as estimates reported by ESA, not independently verified census totals.

What does the statistic say—and not say?

  • It measures weekly play: the threshold is at least one hour per week, not ever having played or being a daily player.
  • It includes children and older adults: the stated population is ages 5–90, not all Americans and not adults only.
  • It is not an ownership or spending statistic: playing does not establish ownership of a console, computer, or game, or how much a person spends.

For industry context, ESA’s 2026 report page lists $60.7 billion in total U.S. consumer spending on video games for 2025: $52.3 billion for content, $5.4 billion for hardware, and $2.95 billion for accessories. These are industry-wide spending figures, not an estimate of what individual players spend; displayed components may not add exactly to the total because of rounding.

What else did ESA report in 2024?

In its 2024 announcement, ESA also reported an average player age of 36 and said the average adult player had played for 17 years. Its reported player gender breakdown was 53% male, 46% female, and approximately 1% non-binary or preferred not to identify. These are figures attributed to ESA’s report, not independently verified population counts. The announcement’s broader framing is also the association’s perspective: ESA President and CEO Stanley Pierre-Louis said video games “have been a fixture in American life and culture for generations.”

ESA’s 2024 data page provides the report-year source for the headline statistic. ESA also published a 2025 report page; the later 2026 page supplies the newer weekly-play figure cited above.
