At an illustrative $3.50 per gallon, that is roughly $4,025 in modeled fuel savings—not a guarantee of what an individual owner will save.
How the five-year estimate is calculated
This U.S. model-year 2026 comparison treats the Land Cruiser’s i-FORCE MAX as the hybrid model. Toyota says that powertrain has an EPA-estimated 23 mpg combined rating; Car and Driver lists the Lexus GX at 17 mpg combined for 2026. The difference is 6 mpg. Toyota USA Newsroom and Car and Driver.
For a mixed-driving estimate, the calculation uses each vehicle’s combined rating and the following assumptions:
- 15,000 miles driven per year, or 75,000 miles over five years.
- Gasoline costs an illustrative $3.50 per gallon. This is a scenario assumption, not a claim about today’s price or a fuel-price forecast.
- Both vehicles maintain their stated combined ratings throughout the five-year period.
- The calculation does not discount future costs or include fuel-price changes, maintenance, insurance, depreciation, taxes, purchase-price differences, financing, or resale value.

Using the rounded gallon estimates, the Land Cruiser uses about 1,150 fewer gallons. Multiplying that difference by the assumed $3.50 per gallon gives approximately $4,025. Using unrounded gallons produces about $4,023, so the dollar result is best understood as roughly $4,025.

How to adjust the estimate for your driving
The estimated gallons saved scale with distance driven, while the dollar value also depends on the price you pay for gasoline. For a different fuel price, multiply approximately 1,150 gallons by that price. For a different annual mileage, scale the gallon difference in proportion to your five-year miles.
For example, the calculation is not a prediction for an owner who drives substantially less or more than 15,000 miles annually. Nor does it account for the way a particular driver’s conditions may move real-world fuel use away from the combined ratings.

Why your real-world savings may differ
EPA fuel-economy figures are standardized estimates, not promises of actual mileage. The EPA says its fuel-economy test data comes from laboratory tests and manufacturer-submitted data, and that automakers must update label values when information indicates a value is too high. Your results can vary with city-versus-highway driving, towing, vehicle load, terrain, speed, weather, tire condition, and driving style. The Land Cruiser remains a gasoline-powered vehicle; the hybrid powertrain does not eliminate fuel use. Ratings can also vary by exact vehicle configuration, so check the current window sticker for the specific SUV you are considering.

What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you
The fuel calculation shows one cost difference under defined assumptions. It does not establish which SUV is the better financial choice overall. To compare ownership costs, evaluate the dimensions that matter for your use separately:
- Purchase price and financing costs.
- Seating and cargo needs.
- Towing requirements.
- Off-road equipment and how you intend to use it.
- Fuel grade and other operating costs.
- Insurance, maintenance, taxes, and resale value.
The cited fuel-economy figures also come from different sources: Toyota’s newsroom release supports the Land Cruiser estimate, while the GX figure cited here is from Car and Driver’s 2026 comparison. Verify both against the exact vehicles’ current window stickers when making a purchase decision.
