The best fit depends on whether you can reach paying customers, deliver what you sell, and manage the costs and rules involved. Here are 49 models to evaluate and test before committing significant time or money.
Online selling is established, but adoption figures do not predict an individual seller’s results. Eurostat reported that 24% of EU businesses conducted e-sales in 2025 for the previous year. It also reported that 21% used websites or apps for web sales, 8% sold through their own website or app, and 9% used an ecommerce marketplace. These are EU business figures, not startup success rates.
The ideas below are grouped by how they make money. For each one, consider the expertise it requires, the costs of creating and delivering the offer, how you will find customers, and what local rules apply. A marketplace can provide a route to shoppers; an owned website or app gives you a different sales route. Neither guarantees traffic or sales.
Ecommerce and physical-product businesses
Product businesses need a plan for sourcing or making goods, taking orders, fulfillment, shipping, returns, and customer support. If you sell through a marketplace, check its current rules and fees; if you use your own store, plan how customers will discover it.

1. Print-on-demand apparel and merchandise
Create designs for items such as shirts, mugs, or tote bags and use a print-on-demand supplier to produce orders. You avoid holding finished stock, but still need original designs, a clear audience, supplier quality checks, and a plan for customer service and returns.
2. Reselling goods online
Buy or source products and resell them through a marketplace or your own store. The work is in finding items customers want, checking condition and authenticity where relevant, pricing after all costs, and managing inventory and delivery.
3. Dropshipping
List products for sale and have a supplier ship orders to customers. You may avoid storing inventory yourself, but remain responsible for the customer experience: confirm supplier stock, shipping times, product quality, returns, and who handles problems before taking orders.
4. Handmade products
Sell products you make, such as jewelry, ceramics, or sewn goods. This suits makers who can price their time and materials accurately; production capacity, packaging, shipping, and product-specific requirements can limit how quickly the business grows.
5. Subscription boxes
Curate and ship a recurring selection of products around a defined interest. The model depends on sourcing items reliably, making the offer worth renewing, and budgeting for packing, shipping, cancellations, and customer support each cycle.
6. Private-label products
Sell products made by a supplier under your own brand. You need to select and verify a manufacturer, define product specifications, plan for minimum orders and inventory, and check labeling and safety rules that apply to the product and market.
7. Bespoke or customized products
Offer goods made or adapted to a buyer’s specifications, such as personalized gifts or custom furnishings. Set clear limits on revisions, lead times, and what counts as an approved design so customization does not make production or pricing unpredictable.
8. Direct-to-consumer niche brand
Build a brand that sells its products directly to customers through its own store or other channels. You control the customer-facing offer, but must handle product development or sourcing, fulfillment, promotion, and the costs of reaching shoppers.
9. Curated gift boxes
Assemble products into themed gift collections for particular recipients or occasions. The value is in selection and presentation; test whether sourcing, packaging, delivery timing, and seasonal demand fit your margins and capacity.
10. Vintage clothing resale
Source pre-owned clothing, assess condition, photograph and describe each item, and sell online. Each piece may require individual listing work, and accurate sizing, condition notes, and a process for shipping and returns help set buyer expectations.
11. Refurbished-goods resale
Resell used products that have been repaired, cleaned, or restored. This requires reliable sourcing and the skill or partners to assess and prepare goods; state condition clearly and understand any warranty, safety, or consumer-protection obligations.

12. Specialty-food ecommerce
Sell a focused range of packaged foods online, either sourced from producers or made under the rules that apply in your location. Check food safety, labeling, storage, and shipping requirements before choosing products or promising delivery areas.
13. Craft and hobby kits
Bundle materials and instructions for a specific project, such as a beginner craft or model-making activity. You need to source consistent components, explain the skill level and contents accurately, and account for packing and replenishment.
Services and freelancing
Service businesses sell expertise or completed work rather than a physical item. Before taking clients, define the deliverable, timeframe, revision limits, payment terms, and what information or access the client must provide. Digital labour platforms can help freelancers reach a wider range of clients, but they do not ensure steady work. The OECD said in 2023 that “The scale of platform work is difficult to measure and often debated”; estimates of digital-platform employment ranged from less than 1% to as much as 8% of the labour market, a measurement range rather than a forecast or an individual’s odds of finding work.
14. Freelance writing
Write articles, web copy, newsletters, or other materials for clients. A useful offer names the type of writing and intended audience; samples and a reliable process for research, drafts, and revisions help clients assess fit.
15. Editing and proofreading
Improve clients’ existing writing for clarity, consistency, or correctness. Specify whether you provide proofreading, copyediting, or substantive editing, since those services involve different levels of intervention and time.

17. Website design

18. Web development
Build or maintain website features and integrations for clients. This calls for technical expertise, a clear specification, testing, and a plan for updates or support after launch.
19. Bookkeeping
Help businesses organize financial records and routine bookkeeping workflows. Requirements and permitted services vary by jurisdiction, so confirm local rules and avoid representing the service as regulated accounting or tax advice unless qualified to provide it.

Content and audience businesses
Content businesses build an audience before or alongside monetization. Possible income sources include ads, sponsorships, affiliate links, and premium content, but availability, eligibility, and terms depend on the platform, program, and jurisdiction. Disclose affiliate or sponsored relationships as required by the rules that apply to you.

27. Video channel
Publish videos around a consistent subject or audience, then evaluate potential revenue routes such as advertising, sponsorships, or related products. Production takes time, and platform eligibility or audience response should not be assumed in advance.

Publish useful articles for a defined readership. The business may later earn through advertising, sponsorships, affiliate links, or its own products, but it needs an ongoing publishing plan and a way to attract readers.
29. Podcast
Produce an audio show for a specific audience or topic. Potential monetization includes sponsorships, advertising, and premium episodes; before investing in production, test whether you can sustain a publishing schedule and reach listeners.
30. Affiliate-content site

32. Social-media creator business
Build an audience through a social platform and develop suitable revenue streams, such as sponsorships or products. Your reach depends partly on platform rules and distribution, so consider how you will retain audience relationships if access or visibility changes.

Publish specialized reporting, analysis, or practical guidance for subscribers. Readers need a clear reason to pay and a dependable publishing cadence; explain the scope of the subscription and how cancellations work.

35. Livestreaming business
Host live sessions around a subject, performance, or community interest, with potential revenue from sponsorships, subscriptions, or related offerings where available. Plan for moderation, reliable production, and a schedule that viewers can follow.
36. Online community
Build and moderate a community around a shared interest, professional field, or learning goal. A paid membership may be one revenue route, but members need ongoing value and clear community rules; moderation and privacy responsibilities are part of the work.

Digital products can be delivered without shipping a physical item, but they still require useful content, quality control, customer support, and a route to buyers. Amazon’s 2026 business-ideas guide includes digital products and self-publishing, while Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) documents a route for publishing and distributing books. A publishing platform is a distribution option, not evidence that a particular title will sell.
37. Ebook
Package practical knowledge, original research, or creative work in an ebook for a defined readership. Choose a subject you can cover responsibly, edit and format the file, and identify how readers will find it.

How to choose an idea and test it
Do not choose by headline appeal alone. Compare the work involved with your skills, available time, and ability to reach customers. Use a small test to learn whether people understand and want the offer before you commit to larger inventory, production, or advertising costs.
- Pick a specific customer and need. Describe who would pay and what problem, task, or preference the offer addresses. A broad category such as “fitness” is less testable than a defined audience and use case.
- Map the complete delivery. For products, identify the maker or supplier, inventory owner, fulfillment route, shipping, returns, and product compliance. For services, define scope, proof of skill, client acquisition, and delivery capacity. For content and digital products, identify the audience, format, distribution route, and ongoing support.
- Estimate costs before setting a price. Include materials or supplier costs, labor, packaging, shipping, payment and platform charges, returns, taxes, and customer acquisition. Verify current fees and rules directly with the relevant platform and authorities.
- Choose a route to customers. Consider whether a marketplace, social platform, or your own website or app best fits the offer. These routes have different rules and dependencies; an owned site still needs a way to attract visitors.
- Run a bounded demand test. Talk to potential customers, show a sample or clear offer, and track concrete responses such as inquiries, sign-ups, or paid orders. Do not treat compliments, views, or general industry adoption as proof that your specific offer will sell.
- Check legal and operational obligations. Confirm local tax, licensing, privacy, consumer-protection, advertising-disclosure, and product-specific requirements before selling. Requirements depend on where you operate, where customers are, and what you sell.
Platform, market, and compliance considerations
The European Commission says more than one million EU businesses sell goods or digital services via online platforms. Its framework includes the Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act; this is EU-specific context, not a summary of platform law worldwide. Check the rules that apply to your own business and selling locations.
For EU product sellers, Digital Product Passport obligations are being introduced progressively for product groups covered by relevant legislation. The Commission’s indicative working-plan priorities include iron and steel in 2026; energy-related products over 2026–2029; textiles, tyres, and aluminium in 2027; furniture in 2028; and mattresses and ICT products in 2029. These are category priorities, not a blanket rule for every product in those years. Confirm the applicable legislation and timeline for the goods you plan to sell.
Online business models are real and varied; individual results are not established by the fact that others use them. Choose a model whose costs and work you understand, then validate the offer with the customers you intend to serve.
