BTC stood out for liquidity, ETH and SOL for activity alongside greater price movement, and XRP and LINK as exchange-dependent candidates. These are historical comparisons based on 2024 activity—not a ranking of the best coins to trade in 2026.
What made these five crypto assets candidates in 2024?
Benzinga included all five in its 2024 comparison. The strongest supporting evidence for active trading is available for BTC, ETH and SOL. XRP and LINK belong on a watchlist only if the particular exchange and trading pair show adequate liquidity when you check.
| Asset | Why traders considered it | What the 2024 evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin (BTC) | Liquidity benchmark; a starting point when execution and market depth matter. | CME Group reported Bitcoin futures were the leading source of liquidity from November 2023, with average daily open interest above $10 billion during 2024. That figure describes futures open interest, not spot-market volume. An SEC filing reported 56% five-year annualized volatility through December 31, 2024. |
| Ethereum (ETH) | Deep liquidity with more historical price movement than BTC, according to OKX. | CoinGecko reported ETH accounted for 33.5% of yearly 2024 decentralized-exchange (DEX) trading volume. An SEC filing reported 88% five-year annualized volatility through December 31, 2024, and a maximum annual decrease of 82.4% in the period it cited. |
| Solana (SOL) | A higher-beta, active-market candidate; its moves can be more pronounced than BTC or ETH, according to OKX. | CoinGecko reported SOL accounted for 25.2% of 2024 DEX trading volume and more than 30% of DEX trades in 2024 Q4. Check order-book depth on the venue you would use. |
| XRP (XRP) | A venue-dependent altcoin candidate included in Benzinga’s 2024 list. | The cited sources do not establish a consistent 2024 comparison of XRP spreads or order-book depth across exchanges. Its suitability depends on the specific venue and pair. |
| Chainlink (LINK) | A venue-dependent infrastructure-token candidate included in Benzinga’s 2024 list. | The cited sources do not establish a consistent 2024 comparison of LINK spreads or order-book depth across exchanges. Assess current volume, spread and depth before considering a trade. |
CoinGecko’s DEX figures describe activity on decentralized exchanges; they are not a measure of total crypto-market volume or proof that a particular exchange has a deep order book. Likewise, futures open interest is not interchangeable with spot liquidity. These figures help explain why BTC, ETH and SOL merited attention, but they do not guarantee easy execution on every venue.
How to decide whether a coin is tradable on your exchange
Check liquidity and order-book depth
Look at the exact pair you intend to trade, such as BTC/USD or ETH/USDT, on the specific exchange. Compare the bid and ask and inspect the quantity available near those prices. A coin’s headline trading volume does not tell you how much you can buy or sell at a particular price; a thin book can mean greater slippage when entering or exiting.

Compare volatility with your ability to manage risk
Price movement can create trading opportunities, but it can also make losses accumulate quickly. The SEC-filed five-year figures above are historical annualized volatility measures, not predictions of a coin’s next-day movement. The SEC warned in its 2025 statement on crypto-asset exchange-traded products: “The trading prices of many digital assets, including bitcoin, have experienced extreme volatility in recent periods and may continue to do so.”
Account for trading-session activity
Coinbase Institutional reports that U.S. trading hours and the latter part of European hours have an outsized effect on crypto volume and volatility. This is a reason to consider when you expect to trade—not a guarantee that a specific session will bring better prices or execution.

Set risk limits before placing a day trade
Decide in advance how large a position you can afford to lose on, what would invalidate the trade, and when you will stop trading for the day. Establish your stop logic, maximum daily loss and leverage limit before entry. No coin or liquidity statistic establishes a reliable profit, and leverage can magnify losses as well as gains.

For a historical 2024 comparison, BTC had the clearest liquidity case, while ETH and SOL had substantial DEX activity alongside higher documented volatility or a higher-beta profile. XRP and LINK were watchlist options rather than universal picks because comparable venue-level spread and depth evidence was not established. The practical choice is the asset whose specific market has enough depth for your order and whose risk fits your limits.
