4J Studios’ move toward original games is a gradual shift in emphasis, not a break with its history of ports and development work for other companies. In an August 2023 interview, co-founder Chris van der Kuyl said the studio increasingly wanted to make and publish games based on its own ideas, with Manic Mechanics as an example. The approach also leaves room for publishing games made by outside studios—and later partnerships that help those games reach more players.
What changed in 4J Studios’ strategy?
For years, 4J Studios built experience by developing games for other companies, including console ports and technical work. Van der Kuyl described that background as giving the studio a foundation from which it could choose projects and partners. In the 2023 GamesBeat interview, he put the creative case plainly: “We’d rather make original games with the amazing team that we have.”
The change is best understood as a preference to devote more of the studio’s work to original ideas—not as evidence that 4J has stopped taking on external development work. Original development gives the studio more creative control over what it makes; its accumulated technical and platform experience remains relevant to building and releasing games. The available figures do not establish that either model performs better commercially for 4J.
How does Manic Mechanics fit that direction?
Manic Mechanics is a party game about repairing vehicles for the residents of Octane Isle. 4J’s official game page describes six neighborhoods and 30 garage levels, with teamwork, time pressure, and hazards that make each job more chaotic. It lists Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC via Steam, and says players can team up with as many as three fellow mechanics.

Van der Kuyl said the team wanted the gameplay to be accessible to people who do not play games often, while still offering difficult challenges and discoveries for experienced players. That design goal connects the game to 4J’s stated “games for everyone” ethos: people can play together without requiring every player to arrive with the same level of experience.
Original games are only part of 4J’s publishing activity
4J’s own announcement about its publishing label named Skye Tales, made by Puny Astronaut, as its first published title. The announcement also described a mix of original 4J games and titles from studios in which it had invested through Chroma Ventures. It quoted van der Kuyl saying more games were scheduled for release in 2023, including both kinds of projects.

The two games illustrate different approaches to audience and play style: 4J describes Manic Mechanics as a chaotic party and multiplayer game, while its publishing announcement describes Skye Tales as an accessible adventure about a friendly dragon. The available sources do not give comparable sales or budget figures for the games.
What did Curve Games’ later partnership mean?
In October 2024, 4J announced that Curve Games would take over publishing Skye Tales and Manic Mechanics. The announcement said the partnership covered distribution, promotion, and international opportunities. Van der Kuyl said Curve was well placed to help bring the titles to a wider audience. This was a publishing arrangement; it does not mean Curve originated or developed the games.

The sequence matters: 4J’s 2023 interview set out the studio’s ambition to make more original games, while its later announcement described a publishing partner for two existing titles. Original development and outside publishing support can therefore sit alongside one another in the studio’s strategy.

GamesBeat’s 2023 interview reported 4J figures of 16 titles published over the studio’s history, 17 mash-up games, seven mini games, 30 skin packs, 11 texture packs, 11 international awards, and 150 million players. These are figures attributed to 4J in that interview, not independently audited measures. The official Manic Mechanics page separately lists six neighborhoods and 30 garage levels; that page is undated.
