4 Ways to Check a Business at the Better Business Bureau

Use four BBB checks—profile match, rating, accreditation, and complaints or reviews—then confirm important credentials with the responsible agency or insurer.

To check a business at the Better Business Bureau (BBB), find its matching Business Profile, understand the rating and its reasons, verify accreditation separately, and review its complaints and customer reviews. Treat the profile as one due-diligence source—not a guarantee. Confirm important licenses with the relevant agency, insurance with the insurer, and review claims with other sources before making a decision.

1. Find the right BBB Business Profile

Go to the BBB directory and search by business name and location. The directory also accepts a business category, phone number, website address, or email address.

Check that the profile matches the specific company or branch you are considering. Compare its listed name, location, contact details, and website with the business’s own information. A name-only match can lead you to a different company or location.

BBB publishes profiles for accredited and non-accredited businesses, so look for a profile even if the business does not display accreditation. If you cannot find one, BBB suggests contacting your local BBB for information. Also check official records and other review sources; a missing profile does not establish whether the business is trustworthy.

2. Read the rating and why BBB assigned it

BBB ratings run from A+ to F. BBB describes a rating as its opinion of how a business is likely to interact with customers, based on information in its file. Factors can include complaint history, type of business, time in business, transparent practices, whether the business honors commitments to BBB, licensing, and advertising issues. Read the profile’s explanation of significant factors rather than relying on the letter alone.

A profile may show NR, meaning “No Rating,” when BBB does not have enough information or the file is under review or update. NR is not a letter grade, and the profile does not by itself explain every detail behind the status.

Rank #2
Corporate Seal Embosser and Self Inking Stamp | Combo (Black, 2-Items)
  • Bundle 2 Corporate Seals; create 1.6-inch impressions, inked or raised
  • Black-bodied Standard Pocket Model Seal Embosser; simple hand-operated press
  • Black-bodied Ideal 400R Self-inking Stamp; consistent, sleek stamper
  • Custom Company Details; we'll engrave exactly what you enter

BBB says a rating is not a guarantee of reliability or performance. It is an assessment based on information available to BBB, so use it alongside the profile details and independent checks.

3. Check accreditation separately

Accreditation is voluntary and distinct from a BBB rating. A business can have an A+ rating without being accredited; lack of accreditation, on its own, is not evidence of a problem. A BBB Accredited Business displays the BBB Seal on its profile.

If a business shows a BBB Seal on its website, advertisement, vehicle, or premises, look up its current profile on BBB.org. BBB warns that a seal shown elsewhere could be outdated or used without permission.

4. Examine complaints and customer reviews

BBB profiles can include complaint history and customer reviews, but those entries serve different purposes. A complaint is a formal request for help resolving a marketplace dispute. A customer review describes a consumer’s opinion or experience and does not necessarily ask BBB to resolve anything. A scam report alerts others to suspected illegal or fraudulent offers or outreach.

Rank #4
Hubco Traditional Business Stamp Seal with Old-Fashioned Wood Handle, 1.6 x 1.6 Inches, Black, Tan, 1 Count [LLC]

  • Traditional rubber hand stamp; seperate pad required
  • Strong wood core and handle; manufactured on-site
  • Produce 1.6 Inch diameter, round impressions; color depends on ink choice

BBB says complaints and reviews are sent to the business before publication and may require substantiation of the marketplace experience. For reviews, BBB describes steps such as validating reviewer contact details, confirming an interaction, allowing the business to respond, and screening content. It also says it cannot guarantee the accuracy or truthfulness of any individual review. Customer reviews do not affect the BBB letter rating.

Look for patterns, dates, the business’s replies, and apparent efforts to address issues. One entry may have little context; repeated similar concerns or a pattern of unresolved responses may be more informative. BBB acts as a neutral intermediary and cannot force a business to resolve a complaint.

Verify important claims outside BBB

Use BBB as a starting point, then confirm material credentials with the organization responsible for them. BBB advises consumers to verify an industry license with the relevant agency and confirm claimed insurance with the insurer. For formal credentials or legal status, rely on the primary agency or insurer record rather than treating a BBB profile summary as definitive.

A BBB profile may also report information such as licensing, advertising issues, government actions, misuse of the BBB name or logo, known closures, bankruptcy, and returned mail. For broader context, BBB recommends searching the business name with the word “reviews” and comparing review sources.

BBB is a nonprofit information and dispute-resolution organization, not a government agency, and it has no regulatory power. If you need an official decision or enforcement, contact the relevant licensing board, regulator, insurer, or law-enforcement agency. BBB says it usually forwards a submitted complaint within two business days; that is a process estimate, not a promised resolution time.

Compare businesses on the same evidence

If you are choosing between businesses, compare the same dimensions for each rather than ranking them by letter grade alone:
