Some everyday possessions may become collectible, but no one can reliably promise that they will be worth a fortune in 2046. A thriving resale market shows that buyers are interested now; it does not prove that prices will rise over the next two decades. The useful approach is to identify items with specific editions, models, or features that collectors seek, then check actual sales and preserve the item carefully.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you

There are active markets for familiar objects. In eBay’s 2026 multi-market survey, 47% of surveyed consumers said they bought secondhand goods at least monthly, compared with 35% in 2025; 76% had shopped secondhand in the previous year and 55% had done so online. Those figures describe secondhand shopping, not investment returns. The same eBay report found that 31% of surveyed sellers listed Collectibles & Memorabilia among their popular categories, followed by electronics & computers (27%) and books, movies & music (24%). These are seller survey responses, not forecasts. eBay’s 2026 Recommerce Report documents present-day activity, not which possessions will appreciate by 2046.

Past examples show why exact identity matters, but they do not establish a typical return. eBay Australia reported that the average sale price of a Louis Vuitton Speedy 30 on its marketplace rose from A$830 in 2022 to A$1,100 in 2024. It also reported increases over the prior three years for two specific collectibles: 100% for the Eminem B-Rabbit 8 Mile 1052 Funko Pop and 55% for LEGO Star Wars Cloud City. These are selected Australian marketplace examples, not evidence that similar products generally rose in value. A 1999 Pokémon Base Set 1st Edition Shadowless Holo Charizard #4 sold for more than A$62,000 on eBay Australia, an exceptional sale that says little about the value of an ordinary trading card.

That qualification matters: the eBay Australia and Deloitte Access Economics report surveyed approximately 2,000 Australian adults and included eBay data on selected items. It says it does not evaluate whether collectors’ financial strategies were effective, and does not account for items that fell in value or failed to sell. Its examples are not a forecast or a complete record of outcomes. Read the report’s scope and limitations.

For scale, Aviva’s 2026 UK survey found that 66% of surveyed British adults considered themselves collectors. Jewellery, coins, records, and toys were among the most commonly collected items, as were cameras. eBay’s 2025 report also describes interest in toys and trading cards; for example, sales of ultra-soft Jellycats on eBay globally rose 270% year over year, and Smiski figure sales rose 230%, comparing January–September 2025 with the same months in 2024. Labubu searches on eBay rose 2,600%, comparing January–October 2025 with the same months in 2024. Those figures measure platform sales or searches, not price gains or future demand. eBay’s 2025 collectibles review offers a snapshot of activity, not a long-range prediction.

30 familiar possessions worth checking

These are candidate objects and categories to inspect—not thirty promises of appreciation. A particular edition, model, variant, or complete set may attract buyers while an ordinary example of the same broad category does not. Treat the list as a prompt to identify what you own, not as a price guide.

Coins and paper collectibles

  1. Coins: Check dates, mint marks, errors, and condition; the fact that a coin is old does not by itself make it valuable.
  2. Coin sets: Keep track of the exact set and whether its original contents are complete.
  3. Commemorative coins: Record the issuing authority, year, and edition rather than relying on a seller’s description.
  4. Paper currency: Note the denomination, series, printing details, and condition before comparing it with sales.
  5. Stamps: Identify the issue and any relevant printing variation; verify authenticity and condition.

Toys, games, and cards

  1. Action figures: Identify the maker, character, release, and variant, and note whether accessories are present.
  2. Building sets: Record the exact set number and check whether pieces, instructions, and packaging remain.
  3. Trading cards: Identify the set, card number, printing, and condition. A celebrated high-value card is an exception, not a proxy for a whole collection.
  4. Video games: Record the platform, title, release, and edition; completeness and condition may distinguish one copy from another.
  5. Board games: Check the edition and whether components and instructions are complete.
  6. Dolls: Identify the maker, model, release, and accessories; avoid assuming that every example from a popular brand is scarce.
  7. Collectible figures: Note the exact character and release. Current attention to figures such as Jellycats, Smiski, or Labubu is evidence of present interest, not a guarantee it will last.

Books, records, and media

  1. First or special editions of books: Verify the edition and printing, rather than relying on a dust jacket or a listing headline.
  2. Comic books: Identify the issue and printing, and assess condition before comparing prices.
  3. Vinyl records: Check the label, catalog details, pressing, and condition; “old record” is too broad a description to value.
  4. Music releases: Look for specific editions, formats, or variants, and confirm that the item matches completed-sale comparisons.
  5. Film or music media: Record the format and edition, and check whether cases, inserts, or other included parts are present.

Cameras and electronics

  1. Film cameras: Identify the manufacturer and model, then check working condition and included lenses or accessories.
  2. Camera lenses: Record the exact model and mount; condition and compatibility matter to prospective buyers.
  3. Older digital cameras: Identify the model and test whether it works, including whether essential batteries or chargers are available.
  4. Audio equipment: Note the model and working state, and be realistic about the cost and difficulty of shipping bulky gear.
  5. Older phones or handheld electronics: Record the precise model and condition; current resale interest does not establish future appreciation.

Fashion, jewellery, and household objects

  1. Designer handbags: Identify the brand and model, and preserve evidence of authenticity and condition. The reported Speedy 30 example is specific to one model and marketplace.
  2. Watches: Record the maker, model, and identifying details, and seek appropriate authentication before treating a claimed value as reliable.
  3. Jewellery: Keep documentation that identifies materials and maker where available; a general category label is not a valuation.
  4. Designer accessories: Identify the exact item and retain any provenance or authenticity documentation.
  5. Vintage clothing: Record the maker, label, era, and condition; broad claims about a style’s popularity are not evidence of a sale.
  6. Decorative ceramics or glassware: Look for maker’s marks and model details, and check for chips, repairs, or missing pieces.
  7. Small household collectibles: Identify the maker and series for objects such as figurines or ornaments; common appearance alone does not establish scarcity.
  8. Complete themed collections: Inventory the individual pieces and missing parts. A group’s value depends on what it contains and what buyers actually pay.

How to check whether your specific item has a market

Use a careful comparison rather than a broad category search. No universal valuation formula is established by the available evidence, but these steps help avoid treating asking prices or headline sales as proof of value.

  1. Identify it precisely. Record manufacturer, model, year, edition, set number, printing, or variant. Search using those details, not only a broad term such as “vintage camera” or “old coin.”
  2. Assess condition and completeness. Note wear, damage, repairs, whether it works, packaging, accessories, and missing parts. Photograph the item and any identifying marks.
  3. Check authenticity and provenance. Distinguish verified originals from reproductions and uncertain listings. Keep receipts, certificates, or other records that support the item’s identity.
  4. Compare completed sales. Look for sold examples of the same item in a similar condition and the same market where possible. An asking price is not evidence that a buyer paid it; one exceptional sale is not a typical price.
  5. Account for selling costs and uncertainty. Consider marketplace fees, shipping, authentication or grading, storage, insurance, and the chance that no buyer appears. A sale price is not the same as money kept.
  6. Keep the timeframe in view. Buyer interest, prices, and tastes can vary by market and change over time. A short-period increase does not establish a twenty-year trend.

Protect the collection you already own

Good records and appropriate storage can help you manage a collection whether or not it appreciates. Keep an inventory with identifying details, photographs, purchase records, and condition notes. Store items in ways that limit avoidable damage, theft, or water exposure, and check your insurance policy to understand what it covers.

Aviva’s 2026 UK data shows why insurance valuation is a separate concern from resale value. Its average collection claim was £4,133 in 2022 and £13,966 in 2025, which it described as an increase of 238%. Those are insurer claim amounts, not collectible sale prices or a representative market index. Aviva advises regular professional valuations for insurance purposes; an insured value should not be mistaken for a likely selling price. Its UK collecting report also identifies theft, accidental damage, and water leaks among collection-claim causes.

If you already own coins, a coin collecting album or coin storage album can help organize them. The album is an accessory, not evidence that the coins inside are rare or likely to appreciate.

How to think about the 20-year horizon

There is no supported forecast here that identifies common possessions certain to become valuable by 2046. eBay’s surveys and marketplace reports show buyer activity in selected categories, while Aviva’s survey and claims data describe collecting and insurance in the UK. Neither establishes a dependable long-term return. In Australia, collectors surveyed by eBay and Deloitte Access Economics reported a median estimated profit of A$13,000 from selling collectibles in the preceding three years, but that self-reported result is not a forecast and the report does not assess whether financial strategies were effective.

For a personal-finance decision, treat a possible collectible as an uncertain asset, not a savings plan. Keep something because you value it or already own it; do not spend money you cannot afford to lose on the assumption that a broad category will rise. The most defensible next step is to identify the exact item, verify its condition and authenticity, and compare real sales before deciding whether it is worth preserving, insuring, or selling.
