Treat the ideas below as starting points to investigate, then assess demand, the work involved, costs, accommodations, and how self-employment could affect benefits. Free and low-cost disability-specific and small-business support is available to help you plan.
What to weigh before choosing a business idea
The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy notes that starting one’s own business can offer flexibility in work hours, tasks, and income. Flexibility is a possibility, not a guarantee: customers, deadlines, inventory, and operating hours can still shape your schedule. The right fit depends on your circumstances and the business itself.
For each idea, consider the same practical questions:
- Demand: Who might pay for the product or service, and how will you test that interest before investing heavily?
- Startup costs: What equipment, supplies, software, insurance, training, or workspace would you need?
- Tasks and schedule: Which daily tasks are essential, and can you do them on a schedule that works for you?
- Access and accommodations: What changes, assistive technology, or support would make the work possible? Online or home-based work is not automatically accessible.
- Skills and rules: What experience or training is needed? Check applicable licensing, permits, insurance, and local requirements for your specific business.
- Benefits and income: Before starting or changing work, ask a benefits counselor how self-employment income and business assets could affect your situation.

Understand what SBA grants do—and do not—cover
The SBA says it does not provide grants to start or expand a business. Its grants support organizations and programs, including entrepreneurship counseling and training. The agency also lists a specific program that funds organizations providing training to service-disabled veteran entrepreneurs; that is not a general startup grant for disabled founders. Check the SBA grants page for current details, and be cautious of claims that a personal startup grant is guaranteed.
