Shopping online can make it easier to compare products and reach more sellers, but the lowest listed price is not always the best deal. The real comparison includes delivery costs, seller reliability, return terms, payment protections, privacy, and whether you need to inspect or try the item first. Here are the 17 main pros and cons of shopping online—and what to check before checkout.
What are the pros and cons of shopping online?
The main advantages are convenience, broad selection, easier comparisons, and access to product information. The main drawbacks are that you cannot inspect an item in person, delivery and returns can be uncertain or costly, and sellers or listings may be unreliable. Whether online shopping is worth it depends on the product and the full cost and risk of the transaction.

Pros of shopping online
1. It can be convenient
You can browse and place an order without traveling to a store, which is useful when a trip is difficult or local options are limited. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes online shopping as convenient and offering “a world of choices” on a computer, phone, or tablet. Convenience does not necessarily mean the purchase takes less time overall: researching, waiting for delivery, or arranging a return can add time.
2. You can reach more sellers and products
Online listings may include models, sizes, colors, or specialist products that are not available nearby. A larger selection can help you find a better match, but availability alone does not establish that a seller is trustworthy or that a listing is accurate.

3. Comparing prices and features is easier
Search tools and comparison sites can help you compare products and sellers without visiting several stores. Compare the same model and specifications, and include shipping, handling, taxes, and other fees in the total. Some comparison results may include sponsored placement, so check how a result is ranked rather than assuming the first option is cheapest or best.
4. Coupons, sales, and price alerts can reveal deals
Promotions and alerts may help you spot a lower price. Read the conditions before buying: extra fees, exclusions, or different return terms can change the value of a deal. Compare the final price and policy with other offers rather than relying on a discount label.
5. Product details and reviews can inform a decision
Descriptions, specifications, and customer feedback can help you assess whether an item suits your needs. Use them alongside independent seller checks and trusted expert information. Ratings are clues, not proof: reviews may be fake, incentivized, or manipulated.
6. Some orders include delivery tracking
Tracking updates can show that a parcel has shipped and provide an estimated arrival date. Treat an estimate as information, not a guarantee; save the seller’s promised delivery date and tracking details in case the shipment is late.

Cons of shopping online
7. You cannot inspect or try the item before buying
Photos and descriptions cannot fully show how clothing fits, how a material feels, the scale of an object, its finish, or the condition of a used item. This matters most when touch, fit, or firsthand inspection is important. For used goods on a marketplace, check whether the images show the actual item or are stock photos.
8. The listed price can understate the actual cost
Shipping, handling, taxes, and other fees can erase an apparent saving. A promotion may also have conditions that affect its value. Compare the full delivered total, not just the price shown in search results or an advertisement.
9. Delivery may be delayed or fail
Estimated arrival dates can change, and a shipment may not arrive. In the United States, the FTC says sellers must ship as promised; if no shipping time is stated, its rule generally requires shipment within 30 days after the seller receives the buyer’s information and payment authorization. This is U.S.-specific guidance; consumer rules differ elsewhere. Save the listing and delivery promise, along with tracking updates.

10. Returns can take effort and cost money
Return deadlines, return-shipping charges, restocking fees, and exceptions for sale items vary by seller. Read the policy before paying, especially if you are unsure about fit or condition. A return that is technically allowed may still be inconvenient or uneconomical.

A high star rating does not guarantee that feedback is genuine or representative. Read detailed reviews, compare feedback across sources, notice whether a reviewer says they received an incentive, and check the listing itself for specific product details. Be cautious when reviews seem repetitive or do not match the item being sold.
12. Unfamiliar sellers and counterfeit goods create risk
Check a seller’s identity, contact information, history, and the item’s condition and specifications. Be especially cautious if a costly branded product is offered at an implausibly low price or the seller’s details are unclear. The FTC recommends checking whether marketplace photos depict the actual item when buying used goods.

Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. - Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.
13. Scams can leave you with limited ways to recover money
The FTC recommends safer payment methods such as credit cards and warns against sellers who insist on gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps, or cryptocurrency. An HTTPS connection protects the connection to a site but does not prove that the seller is legitimate. In U.S. data published in 2025, the FTC reported that online shopping issues were the second most commonly reported issue in its fraud category. That ranking describes reports within the fraud category; it is not a rate of all online purchases or evidence that a typical order is fraudulent.
14. Apps and sites may collect personal data
Shopping services may collect contact details, purchase history, and location information; companies may combine data to build profiles. Review the site’s privacy disclosures and an app’s permissions, and decide whether its convenience is worth the data practices. The FTC’s app guidance explains why it is worth checking what information an app requests.

A marketplace may offer a process for delivery or refund complaints, or it may leave much of the dispute to the buyer and seller. Before ordering, find out who handles refunds and complaints, what deadlines apply, and what evidence you must provide. Keep messages and transaction records in case you need to raise a dispute.

16. Environmental effects depend on how the order is fulfilled
Online orders and returns can affect transport, packaging, and consumption. UNCTAD’s 2024 Digital Economy Report summarizes evidence that e-commerce can increase consumption through convenience, accessibility, lower prices, and greater variety. The report does not establish a universal rule that an online purchase is always better or worse for the environment than an equivalent store purchase. The outcome depends on factors such as the order, delivery method, returns, shopping behavior, and what the alternative would have been.
17. Published consumer data shows problems are not just hypothetical
The European Commission’s 2025 Consumer Conditions Scoreboard reports that 26% of EU consumers who bought online experienced a problem they felt gave legitimate reason to complain, compared with 16% of offline buyers. These figures describe surveyed EU consumers and are not a global rate or a prediction of the risk for any individual purchase. The same scoreboard says 93% of online shoppers expressed worries about targeted advertising; 71% cited collection of personal data without consent, 67% excessive advertising, and 63% unavoidable personalisation. These are overlapping concerns, not figures to add together.

There is no universal winner. Use the product and your priorities to compare the options:
- Total price: Compare the delivered total, including taxes, shipping, handling, and fees.
- Selection: Check whether you can find the exact model or specifications locally and online.
- Need to inspect: Prefer an in-person option when fit, feel, scale, or condition is hard to judge remotely.
- Delivery: Consider whether the stated timing works for you and how much certainty you need.
- Returns: Compare the deadline, cost, restocking fees, and practical steps for sending an item back.
- Seller and marketplace support: Find out who is responsible if the item is late, missing, or different from the listing.
- Payment recourse: Choose a method that offers a way to dispute a problem, and avoid unusual payment demands.
- Privacy: Consider what information the site or app collects and whether you are comfortable sharing it.
- Environmental impact: Account for delivery, packaging, possible returns, and the alternative trip or purchase pattern.
What to check before you buy something online
- Verify the seller. Check its identity, contact details, history, and the marketplace’s role in handling disputes.
- Match the product. Compare the exact model, specifications, condition, and exclusions—not just similar-looking listings.
- Calculate the full cost. Include shipping, handling, taxes, and any other fees; read conditions attached to discounts.
- Check fulfillment and returns. Review when the item is expected to ship, the return deadline, shipping charges, and any restocking fee.
- Assess the evidence. Read reviews critically, check other sources, and confirm whether photos show the actual item when condition matters.
- Review privacy and payment. Check privacy disclosures and app permissions; use a payment method with recourse and refuse demands for gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps, or cryptocurrency.
- Keep records. Save the listing, receipt, relevant policies, promised delivery date, tracking details, and messages with the seller.
For purchases outside the United States, check your local consumer rules: the FTC’s shipping and payment guidance describes U.S. protections, while retailer and marketplace policies vary and can change.
