The best kids backpack is the one that fits your child, carries the school’s actual supplies without becoming too heavy, and suits how it will be used. How to choose a kids school backpack
Start with the child and the school list, not a character design, age label, or advertised capacity. A pack should be proportional to the child and sit close to the body, in the middle of the back. Try it on with the usual school load, then check that the child can walk naturally and use both shoulder straps.
Check the fit and straps
- Look for two broad, adjustable shoulder straps; padding can make them more comfortable.
- A padded back panel, compartments, and a chest strap or waist belt can help the pack sit securely and distribute its load.
- Adjust the straps so the pack rests close to the child’s body rather than hanging low or pulling backward.
- Do not rely on a maker’s age category or “small” and “large” labels alone. Compare stated dimensions with your child and test the loaded pack on them.
Keep the packed weight manageable
A backpack-safety article hosted by HealthyChildren.org and updated August 27, 2026, says a loaded backpack should not weigh more than 15% of a child’s body weight. The same guidance says that if a child has to lean forward to support the load, it is too heavy. Put the heaviest items closest to the back and use compartments to distribute contents. Which size or type fits your child’s needs?
For a smaller child or a short school list
Use the school’s supply list and your child’s height to narrow the choice. The Mackenzie small is one example of a manufacturer tying a size to a height range: 43–49 inches. Its listed contents offer a reference point, but they are not an independent capacity or fit test. The Junior Original is another option described for younger children; consult its product page for current dimensions and make an on-child fit check before choosing.
For an older child or a longer school list
The Mackenzie large is listed for children over 48 inches tall, while L.L.Bean describes its 24L Original Book Pack as designed for ages six and up. Those categories overlap and do not settle which pack will fit a particular child. Compare the pack’s dimensions with the child’s torso and the supplies they must carry; then weigh the loaded bag.

For school and air travel
School capacity and travel suitability are different questions. STATE Bags lists its Kane Kids Travel Backpack at 23.6L and describes it as a personal item on most major airlines. Before flying, check the bag’s current dimensions and the operating airline’s rules for your route; personal-item limits vary, and the manufacturer’s statement cannot guarantee acceptance.
A quick fit-and-packing check before buying
- List the usual contents. Include books, folders, lunch, water, and anything the child carries every day.
- Compare dimensions to the child. Use the manufacturer’s measurements as a starting point, not a substitute for trying the pack on.
- Load and adjust it. Put heavier items close to the back, use the compartments, adjust both straps, and have the child wear both.
- Check posture and movement. The pack should sit close to the body and around the middle of the back. If the child leans forward to support it, reduce the load.
- For air travel, check the carrier. Verify the bag’s dimensions and the specific airline’s current personal-item policy before departure.
A handled or rolling backpack may be worth considering if the school permits it, but stairs, snow, or limited storage can make rolling bags impractical. Choose based on the child’s route and school rules rather than treating wheels as a universal solution.
