No tactic guarantees higher revenue for every nonprofit: results depend on your mission, donor base, staff capacity, and costs. Track net revenue, donor retention, repeat-gift conversion, average gift, and staff time—not just gross dollars.
Why focus on repeat giving as well as new gifts?
More fundraising revenue does not necessarily mean more donors. The Fundraising Effectiveness Project (FEP), summarized by AFP, estimated that charitable dollars raised in 2025 grew 5.0% (±0.5%) compared with 2024, while donor counts fell 3.6% (±0.5%). In its Q1 2026 comparison with Q1 2025, FEP estimated dollars raised increased 4.3% while donor counts declined 0.8%; AFP also reported falling retention among Small, Midsize, Major, and Supersize donor segments. These are aggregate sector results, not forecasts for an individual organization. AFP’s Q1 2026 summary and FEP’s annual findings provide the reporting context.
That pattern makes donor retention and converting first-time donors into repeat givers important measures alongside acquisition. Choose methods using your own records, then account for the full cost of each one.
14 ways to strengthen nonprofit donations
1. Offer recurring gifts on the donation form
Let donors choose an automatic monthly gift while they are already giving. Make the option clear, explain how recurring support helps, and set a monthly ask that fits the donor and the organization’s needs. AFP recommends making automatic recurring gifts available through the online donation form. AFP’s recurring-giving guide outlines a practical approach.

- 【Raffle Ticket Box with 4 x 0.4-Inch Slot】 The top slot is precision-sized for raffle tickets, voting slips, and paper notes, so entries drop in cleanly without jamming at school raffles and contests. Fold or trim oversized slips first and the line keeps moving. Check your insert sizes before the event
- 【Shatter-Resistant Acrylic, See-Through Body】 Crystal-clear acrylic walls keep every bill and ticket in plain view, so donors watch their gift drop in and land, and you can check the collection level at a glance without opening the lid. The shatter-resistant body survives busy events, stays light enough to move between tables, and wipes clean for reuse
- 【4 x 6-Inch Sign Holder for Any Event】 The built-in holder fits standard 4 x 6-inch paper or cards. Swap the insert to relabel the box as a tip jar, tip box, suggestion box, ballot box, raffle box, or a go-to among donation boxes for fundraising events and giveaways. No tools needed; display cards are not included
- 【Donation Box with Lock and 2 Keys】 The keyed lock keeps collected cash and tickets secure while you step away from the table or between pickups. Two keys are included, one for the organizer and one spare. Seat the lid fully before locking
- 【Compact 6.2 x 4.6 x 4.0-Inch Countertop Size】 Measuring 6.2 x 4.6 x 4.0 inches, it fits bake sales, office front desks, concession stands, reception counters, and service stations without crowding your display space, yet holds plenty for steady collections
2. Identify likely monthly donors from your own records
Use CRM information to find supporters who may be receptive to recurring giving, rather than sending the same invitation to everyone. Past giving patterns can help guide whom to ask and at what level; your records should determine whether the targeting is useful.
3. Promote monthly giving across channels
Describe the recurring option on your website, in email, on social media, and in direct mail. Keep the explanation and donation destination consistent so supporters can find the option regardless of where they encounter the appeal.
4. Thank recurring donors and learn why they joined
Acknowledge the commitment and keep donors informed about the work their support enables. When appropriate, invite them to share why they chose to give regularly; use what you learn to improve future communications, not to presume every donor wants the same contact.

5. Treat acknowledgment as part of stewardship
Plan the thank-you as part of the donor relationship, not as an afterthought once a campaign ends. AFP advises considering donor communication preferences and using the giving channel as a practical clue for acknowledgment format. Ask about preferences through a conversation or survey where feasible. AFP’s direct-mail and stewardship guidance discusses these practices.

6. Follow an appeal with relevant communication
Coordinate an appeal with follow-up information about the mission or the work donors made possible. A personal call can suit some supporters or circumstances; use it where appropriate and where your team can follow through.
7. Coordinate direct mail with email
Use email before or after a mailing to reinforce the same campaign, explain how to respond, or follow up with relevant information. Coordination gives supporters more than one route to act without treating mail and digital outreach as competing choices.

8. Make the online giving route easy from a mailed appeal
Provide a clear, working web address or QR code that takes readers to the relevant giving page. AFP contributor Harry Lynch describes QR codes as a bridge from mailed appeals to online giving; this is practitioner guidance, not a verified guarantee of improved results. Lynch’s AFP article discusses the role of segmentation and storytelling in direct mail.
9. Segment mailings before paying to produce them
Choose the donor segments that justify printing and postage based on your organization’s own results. Compare response and net return across segments; a larger mailing is not automatically a more effective one.

10. Use donor-relevant stories in appeals
Connect a story to the mission and the action you are asking supporters to take. Make the giving route and purpose clear, and avoid assuming that a compelling story alone will produce more gifts.

11. Respect channel preferences
Give supporters a practical way to give and receive acknowledgments through channels that suit them. Where preferences are known, use them; where they are not, test a reasonable approach and learn from the response.
12. Give supporters a clear next step
Every appeal should make the requested action understandable: where to give, what the gift supports, and how to reach the organization with a question. Remove unnecessary friction from the donation process and check that links and forms work.
13. Test changes against a useful baseline
Change one meaningful element at a time when practical—such as the audience, channel timing, or recurring-gift presentation—and compare it with a prior campaign or suitable comparison group. Keep results specific to the campaign and audience; sector trends cannot establish what caused an outcome for your nonprofit.

14. Review net results and staff effort before repeating a tactic
Assess what remains after production, postage, payment fees, and staff time. Consider whether a tactic also helps retention or repeat giving. Keep methods your team can sustain and that fit the audience, even when their gross totals are not the largest.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose which methods to use
There is no established head-to-head result showing that one channel or tactic works best for every nonprofit. Compare options against your own audience, costs, goals, and capacity rather than choosing by gross revenue alone.
| Evaluation question | What to examine |
|---|---|
| Audience fit | Which donor segments have responded to this method in your organization’s records? |
| Net return and cost | What remains after production, postage, fees, and staff time? |
| Retention and repeat giving | Does the approach help a first-time donor give again or sustain support? |
| Convenience and preference | Can supporters give and receive acknowledgments through a channel that suits them? |
| Operational capacity | Can your team maintain the method and steward the relationships it generates? |
These measures are more useful for local decisions than treating aggregate sector results as a prediction. For wider context, Independent Sector’s 2025 report on the U.S. nonprofit sector cites Giving USA’s estimate of $592 billion in U.S. charitable giving in 2024, an all-time nominal high but below the 2021 high after inflation adjustment. It also reproduces FEP’s 2024 estimates: donor counts fell 4.5% (±0.5%), dollars rose 3.5% (±0.5%), and retention declined 2.6% (±0.5%). Those annual 2024 measures are distinct from FEP’s 2025 full-year and Q1 2026 estimates.
