There is no well-supported, year-by-year ranking of 13 used Porsches as the “most reliable.” The candidates below are a practical shortlist, not a statistical top 13: Porsche’s historical dependability results favor particular 911, Macan and Cayenne study cohorts, while a Porsche dealer recommends considering 2018–2022 used models across five families. Neither source proves that every car from those years is dependable. Records, condition and an inspection matter more than a model name alone.
How to read this 13-candidate shortlist
The 13 entries are shopping targets assembled from the evidence available, not 13 independently ranked model-year variants. Porsche Livermore’s dealer article recommends beginning with 2018–2022 used model years and discusses the 911, Boxster, Cayman, Macan and Cayenne. That is a dealer recommendation, not a year-by-year reliability study. The two strongest independent model-level findings available here are historical J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) results for the 911, plus segment-leading results for the Macan and Cayenne in separate study years.
For that reason, the entries identify model years or shopping ranges to investigate; they do not promise that a particular year, trim or individual car will be trouble-free. The model-year ranges are not a proven reliability ordering, and the evidence does not establish generation-by-generation common-fault rates for these choices.
The 13 used Porsche candidates
| Candidate | Why it belongs on the shortlist | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 1. 2018 Porsche 911 | A relevant starting point for a buyer focused on the 911 and willing to assess an older individual car carefully. | The 2021 U.S. VDS studied 2018 model-year vehicles. Porsche reported that the 911 led all models, at 57 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100). This is a result for that study cohort, not a forecast for every 2018 911. |
| 2. 2019 Porsche 911 | A second 911 year with a directly relevant historical dependability-study result. | The 2022 U.S. VDS studied 2019 model-year vehicles; the 911 again led all models, at 94 PP100. The 2021 and 2022 figures come from different study cohorts and should not be treated as a year-over-year comparison. |
| 3. 2020–2022 Porsche 911 | A newer 911 range within the dealer-recommended 2018–2022 shopping window. | The cited VDS results do not establish reliability for these model years. Compare the exact car’s records, condition, equipment and inspection findings rather than carrying the 2018 or 2019 result forward. |
| 4. 2018 Porsche Macan | A compact-SUV candidate for shoppers who want a Porsche in a smaller utility-vehicle format. | The 2021 U.S. VDS found the Macan led its premium compact SUV segment, but that result should not be applied as proof about every model year or used example. |
| 5. 2019 Porsche Macan | A candidate within the dealer-recommended used-year window. | No separate year-specific result for this candidate is established by the cited material. The Macan’s 2021 VDS segment result is historical cohort evidence, not an individual-car guarantee. |
| 6. 2020 Porsche Macan | A candidate within the same recommended shopping range, subject to a record and condition review. | The cited sources do not provide a distinct 2020 Macan reliability ranking. |
| 7. 2021 Porsche Macan | A later-year compact-SUV candidate to evaluate against its documented upkeep and inspection. | The available Macan VDS finding is a segment result from the 2021 study; it does not establish that 2021 model-year Macans were the vehicles studied. |
| 8. 2022 Porsche Macan | A newer candidate within the dealer’s recommended range. | The cited material does not establish a specific 2022 Macan dependability result. |
| 9. 2018–2022 Porsche Cayenne | A larger-SUV candidate for buyers who need more space than the Macan offers. | The 2022 U.S. VDS found the Cayenne led the upper midsize premium SUV segment. The study was based on 2019 model-year vehicles, so the result is most relevant to that cohort—not a blanket finding for all five years in this shopping range. |
| 10. 2018–2022 Porsche Boxster | A roadster candidate in the dealer-discussed model range. | The cited sources do not establish a Boxster year-by-year reliability ranking. RepairPal-derived annual maintenance-cost averages reported by ConsumerAffairs are broad model-level averages, not estimates for a particular Boxster; see the cost section below. |
| 11. 2018–2022 Porsche Cayman | A coupe candidate in the dealer-discussed model range. | The cited sources do not establish a Cayman year-by-year reliability ranking. A broad RepairPal-derived annual maintenance-cost average is available at the model level, not for a specific year or vehicle. |
| 12. 2018–2022 Porsche Cayenne | A second way to shop the larger SUV range: compare examples by service history, condition and the equipment you need rather than assuming the study leader is automatically the best buy. | This is a practical shopping candidate, not a separate reliability finding. The historical Cayenne segment result concerns the 2019 model-year cohort in the 2022 VDS. |
| 13. 2018–2022 Porsche Macan | A broad compact-SUV alternative if the individual car’s records and inspection are stronger than those of other examples you find. | This range is included as a search target, not as a separate model-year ranking. The segment-leading result cited above does not identify each year in the range as a top performer. |
The SUV ranges appear more than once because a model-family candidate and a historical study-cohort finding answer different shopping questions; these entries are not 13 unique, proven reliability winners. Do not read their order as a ranking.

What the reliability studies do—and do not—say
J.D. Power’s U.S. VDS measures problems reported during the preceding 12 months by original owners of three-year-old vehicles. A lower PP100 score indicates higher dependability. Porsche’s February 2021 release reported 57 PP100 for the 2018-model-year 911 and 86 PP100 for the brand in that study. Its February 2022 release reported 94 PP100 for the 2019-model-year 911, which again led all models. In those respective studies, the Macan led its premium compact SUV segment and the Cayenne led the upper midsize premium SUV segment.
These are historical cohort results, not a controlled comparison of every used Porsche now for sale. They concern original owners’ reported problems over a defined period; they do not measure the maintenance record or present condition of a particular used car. Nor should the different 911 scores be read as evidence that one model year is more dependable than the other: the study cohorts differ.

Other reliability rankings use different methods and can produce a different picture. ConsumerAffairs’ 2026 summary says RepairPal ranked Porsche 32nd of 32 brands, while its account of 2025 rankings places Porsche eighth of 30 in J.D. Power’s Vehicle Dependability Study and fourth overall in Consumer Reports’ Automotive Report Card. Those positions are not interchangeable measures. The J.D. Power page for the 2025 911 describes its Quality & Reliability category as covering defects, malfunctions and design flaws, including infotainment; it says current-year ratings may rely on prior-year data until new survey data are available. That rating is distinct from the three-year-owner VDS.

These averages can help frame a maintenance budget, but they do not predict the next repair bill. The cited figures do not provide a matching year-specific estimate for the cars in this shortlist, and they do not establish what any particular example will cost to maintain.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose between candidates
- Start with how you will use the car. Decide whether you need a roadster, coupe, compact SUV, larger SUV or 911 before comparing listings.
- Prioritize verifiable records. Review maintenance and warranty booklets, service records, vehicle documentation and included equipment. Gaps in the history leave more uncertainty to resolve.
- Assess the actual car. Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection by a Porsche specialist. Ask the inspector to evaluate the vehicle’s condition and report findings for that specific example; a model-level study cannot do that job.
- Check the functions you will depend on. Test safety-relevant functions, infotainment and interior adjustments, and confirm that equipment matches the seller’s description.
- Use a model-year-specific manual to verify operation and equipment. Porsche says manuals are available in print, PCM, online and the My Porsche app. The printed manual supplied with a car is abridged; an online manual can be selected by model year or VIN. A manual can help confirm how equipment should work, but it is not a reliability assessment.
- Check the VIN for recalls. Porsche’s U.S. recall lookup accepts the car’s 17-character VIN and returns applicable recalls from calendar year 1999 onward. Check the vehicle you intend to buy rather than relying on a model-level assumption.
When Porsche Approved CPO may fit
A Porsche Approved Certified Pre-Owned car may be worth considering if certification and warranty coverage matter to you. Porsche’s official CPO inspection includes checks of exterior condition, fluids, vehicle documentation and equipment, safety-relevant functions, infotainment and interior adjustments. Treat that checklist as a useful framework, not a substitute for checking the exact car and its records. Review the current program terms for the vehicle you are considering; certification does not make condition and documentation irrelevant.
Bottom line for a used-Porsche buyer
If historical dependability-study evidence is your first filter, begin by examining 2018- and 2019-model-year 911s, then consider the Macan and Cayenne with the study-cohort limits in mind. If you are shopping a Boxster, Cayman or another year, the cited evidence does not justify calling one exact year the most reliable. Across all 13 shortlist entries, a documented history, a careful inspection, a VIN recall check and a budget suited to the particular car are stronger grounds for choosing an example than an unsupported year-by-year ranking.
