What happened at Apple’s Spain stores
Apple Retail Spain introduced a new Working Conditions Agreement approved on July 9, 2024, according to reporting by iMore and El Salto. El Salto reported that more than 120 people from Apple’s stores at Puerta del Sol in Madrid, Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona, and Valencia left or were dismissed between July 21 and August 18. August 18 was reportedly the deadline to accept the company’s offered exit conditions.
El Salto characterized the departures as dismissals and reported CGT’s allegation that the process amounted to a concealed collective redundancy. That is the union’s position as reported by the outlet, not a court finding. iMore also reported 120 departures, but the consulted coverage does not provide an independently audited final count.

Apple’s reported explanation
iMore reported that Apple confirmed the new agreement and said it was supported by two main unions representing more than 80% of the Works Council. Apple’s stated rationale, as reported by iMore, was an analysis of productive and organizational needs alongside changing work-life reconciliation needs.

CGT’s criticism
El Salto reported that CGT criticized the agreement and described the process as a concealed collective redundancy. The sources do not establish an independent determination that this characterization was legally correct.
What was reported about staffing and exit terms
El Salto reported that departing employees were offered compensation of 20 days’ pay for each year worked, capped at nine monthly payments; iMore repeated that formula. These are reported terms, not evidence of what any particular worker ultimately received.

Other workforce figures and descriptions in El Salto’s account are attributed to CGT or anonymous workers:
- CGT said the majority of departing workers had 10 to 12 years of seniority.
- El Salto reported that Apple had hired 40 part-time workers on contracts of 20–24 hours.
- CGT estimated that the departures affected 30–40% of the workforce at the three stores.
- Anonymous workers interviewed by El Salto described a staffing shift toward fewer specialized employees and more young part-time staff. They also alleged that schedules were set by an algorithm and could vary substantially from day to day.
These details are reported claims, not independently verified company-wide figures or established Apple policy. The reported scope is the three named stores; the sources do not establish that the same changes affected Apple retail staff across Spain.

Does Spanish law determine whether the process was lawful?
No event-specific legal ruling is established in the cited coverage. A 2015 document from the Court of Justice of the European Union reproduces Article 41 of Spain’s Workers’ Statute, which describes when substantial changes in working conditions may be made and notes that, in certain listed circumstances, an employee who suffers a loss may have a right to terminate the contract with compensation: EUR-Lex document.
That general legal context does not decide whether Apple complied with the law in this case or whether an individual worker qualified for a remedy. The document dates from 2015, and assessing a specific claim would require current Spanish legal sources and the worker’s circumstances.
