Workday and SAP credentials focus on particular platforms and are generally tied to customer or partner access; SHRM and HRCI credentials build broader HR knowledge. The 11 options below are a practical shortlist, not a ranking by salary, hiring demand, or return on investment.
Which HRIS certification should you get?
Start with the job you want, then choose a credential that matches its work. For platform administration or implementation, prioritize the HR system an employer or consulting partner uses and confirm you can access both its learning environment and certification path. For general HR operations, policy, or a move into HR, a broad SHRM or HRCI credential may help establish foundational knowledge, but it does not certify you on a software platform.
- HRIS administration or configuration: look first at a credential for the platform you can use hands-on.
- Reporting and analytics: consider a product credential focused on reporting, such as Workday Pro HCM Reporting.
- Recruiting, benefits, or compensation systems: choose a credential for the relevant product area where you have system access.
- General HR foundation: compare SHRM and HRCI credentials by career stage, eligibility, fees, and renewal requirements.
- Implementation consulting: verify that the issuer permits your employer or partner status to access the credential and, where relevant, provision implementations.
No comparable independent evidence establishes that one of these credentials produces a greater hiring or earnings lift than the others. Treat “top” as a useful selection, not a performance ranking.
11 HRIS certifications to consider
The options below cover vendor-specific system knowledge and broader HR credentials. They are not interchangeable: a general HR certification does not demonstrate competence in a named platform, and a vendor credential does not replace knowledge of HR processes.
#1 Best Overall
1. Workday Pro HCM Core Certification
This is a Workday HCM credential for practitioners who configure and maintain HCM components. Workday describes Workday Pro as a program for customers and partners, so check whether your employer or consulting partner can provide access before planning around it. See the Workday certification catalog and Workday Pro FAQ.
2. Workday Pro Recruiting Certification
A product-area option for practitioners whose work centers on recruiting in Workday. Confirm access through your employer or partner relationship; the credential is not presented as an independently available exam for every applicant. Details are in the Workday catalog and Workday Pro FAQ.
3. Workday Pro Benefits Certification
This focused path is relevant to administrators working with Workday benefits. Workday lists product-area certifications in its certification catalog.
Rank #2
4. Workday Pro Compensation Certification
Consider this option if your Workday responsibilities center on compensation. Workday lists Advanced Compensation separately as another specialty, so match the credential to the module and work you actually handle. See the Workday certification catalog.
5. Workday Pro HCM Reporting Certification
This product-area credential is suited to HRIS professionals whose work emphasizes reporting and analytics. Access to Workday Pro is designed for customers and partners; review the Workday Pro certifications page and ask your organization about eligibility.
6. SAP Certified – SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central Core and Position Management
This is a product-specific implementation credential. SAP says it is intended for registered SAP partner consultants implementing the solution; customers and independent consultants do not receive provisioning rights even if certified. SAP states that the credential is valid for 12 months, with another 12 months available after a successful assessment. The page says a next exam version should be available in mid-December 2026, so check the active version and current access rules before applying. See SAP’s Employee Central credential page and certification options.
Rank #3
7. Oracle Fusion Cloud Applications HCM Process Essentials Certified
Oracle lists this HCM credential in its certification catalog. The catalog information available here does not establish current prerequisites, cost, or renewal rules, so verify those details with Oracle before choosing this path. See the Oracle certification catalog.
8. SHRM-CP
The SHRM Certified Professional credential is aimed at operational HR roles and people pursuing an HR career. SHRM says a degree or prior experience is not required for SHRM-CP. It can complement HRIS work by building general HR knowledge, but it does not validate skill on a particular platform. Check SHRM’s certification overview for current eligibility, fees, exam windows, and renewal details.

10. HRCI Associate Professional in Human Resources (aPHR)
HRCI positions the aPHR as an entry-level, knowledge-based HR credential for people starting in HR or managing people without formal HR training; no HR experience is required. HRCI lists an exam of 65 scored questions plus 25 pretest questions, with 1 hour 45 minutes of exam time. Its stated fees are $300 for the exam plus a $100 application fee. To maintain the credential, HRCI requires 45 recertification credits over three years or a retake of the exam. Confirm current details and preparation resources on the HRCI aPHR page.
11. HRCI Professional in Human Resources (PHR)
The PHR is a more experience-based general HR credential. Check HRCI’s current education and experience eligibility rules before applying; the credential does not validate knowledge of a particular HRIS platform. See the HRCI certification catalog and HRCI FAQ.

Certification costs are only part of the decision. A credential can require an application fee, training, a learning subscription, an assessment, or periodic renewal. Ask your employer whether it pays fees or provides system access, and check the issuer’s current rules before committing.
| Decision factor | What to check |
|---|---|
| Target work | Whether the credential aligns with HR operations and policy, administration, configuration, implementation, reporting, recruiting, benefits, compensation, or payroll. |
| System access | Whether your employer or consulting partner provides the required platform access, learning environment, and permission to pursue the credential. |
| Credential scope | Whether it covers general HR knowledge or a named product and module. |
| Total cost | Current exam and application fees, training or subscription costs, and any employer reimbursement. |
| Renewal | Validity period, continuing-education credits, reassessment, or retesting requirements. |
For reference, SHRM’s current certification page lists early-bird SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP exam fees of $350 for members and $450 for nonmembers, including a $50 nonrefundable application fee. Its standard fees are $399 for members and $499 for nonmembers, including a $50 application fee and a $49 standard-deadline fee. SHRM says certification renewal is every three years. These are issuer-listed rates and requirements; confirm them on the SHRM page before applying.
A practical route into HRIS work
If you are changing careers, first build enough HR process knowledge to understand the workflows the software supports. Then seek hands-on experience with the platform used by the employers you are targeting. Choose a certification only after confirming that it matches your target role and that you can meet its access requirements. A vendor credential can document product knowledge, but the issuer information cited here does not establish that it guarantees a job.
