Pepperstone and OANDA are not interchangeable brokers. Pepperstone is built primarily around active CFD and forex trading, with a wide choice of third-party platforms and commission-based pricing. OANDA is more focused on forex, offers very small position sizes, and has a stronger proprietary trading and API ecosystem in some regions.
The better choice depends on your country, the products you want, and whether you value low headline spreads or a simple way to trade small positions. Before comparing prices, confirm which legal entity will hold your account. Pepperstone and OANDA offer different markets, leverage limits, protections, and platforms in the UK, Europe, Australia, Canada, and elsewhere.
Quick verdict
| Trader profile | Likely better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Active forex or CFD trader | Pepperstone | Strong platform choice and commission-based accounts designed for frequent trading. |
| Beginner wanting a straightforward forex interface | OANDA | Its proprietary web and mobile platforms are generally easier to approach than a multi-platform CFD setup. |
| Trader needing very small position sizes | OANDA | OANDA commonly supports trades as small as one unit in its forex offering, subject to local rules and product availability. |
| MetaTrader 5 or cTrader user | Pepperstone | Pepperstone is widely known for supporting MT4, MT5, cTrader and, in some regions, TradingView. |
| Algorithmic trader wanting an API | OANDA | OANDA has a long-established REST API and programmatic trading tools in supported regions. |
| UK investor wanting shares, funds or a stocks-and-shares ISA | Neither is the obvious choice | Both are primarily leveraged-trading brokers. A mainstream investment platform may be more suitable for long-term, unleveraged holdings. |
| U.S. resident | OANDA, subject to eligibility | OANDA operates a U.S. retail forex business. Pepperstone does not generally accept U.S. retail clients. |
This is a fit comparison, not a promise that one broker will always produce the lowest trading cost. Spreads, commissions, financing and execution all matter.
Pepperstone vs OANDA: the main difference
Pepperstone is closer to a specialist trading venue. Its account and platform range is aimed at people who already know whether they want MT4, MT5, cTrader or another supported interface. The broker is especially popular with forex traders, scalpers and CFD traders who compare raw spreads plus commission.

OANDA takes a more direct-to-client approach. Its own web and mobile platforms are central to the experience, although supported clients may also use MetaTrader, TradingView and API tools. OANDA is particularly notable for flexible trade sizing, which can be useful when testing a strategy or keeping risk small on a modest account.
Neither broker should be treated as a conventional buy-and-hold investment platform. CFDs and rolling spot forex are leveraged products. You do not normally own the underlying share, index or commodity, and losses can be substantial relative to the money initially deposited.
Markets and availability
The legal entity matters more here than the brand name. Pepperstone’s international businesses commonly provide forex and CFDs on instruments such as indices, shares, commodities, cryptocurrencies and currency pairs. Some regions also offer spread betting. The exact list depends on local regulation.
OANDA is best known for forex. Some OANDA entities also offer CFDs on indices, commodities, metals, bonds, shares or cryptocurrencies, while others offer a much narrower range. U.S. customers, for example, face a different product menu from customers in the UK or Australia.

Pricing: Pepperstone’s Razor account versus OANDA’s pricing models
Pepperstone usually presents two broad pricing structures:
- Standard: the broker builds its charge into the spread, with no separate trading commission on many products.
- Razor: a raw or near-raw spread is combined with a commission, usually calculated per lot or per side. The commission currency and amount depend on the entity and account base currency.
OANDA commonly offers a spread-only account and, in some jurisdictions, a lower-spread account with a separate commission. The names and eligibility requirements vary by country. Do not assume that an OANDA account available in the United States or Australia has the same terms as one available in the UK.

The relevant calculation is:
Total cost = spread cost + opening commission + closing commission + overnight financing + conversion charges
For example, suppose you trade one standard lot of EUR/USD. A commission account might show a 0.1-pip spread but charge a commission on both entry and exit. A spread-only account might show a 0.8-pip spread and no separate commission. At a rough USD 10 per pip for one standard lot, the spread-only cost would be about $8 before financing. The commission account could be cheaper or more expensive depending on the exact commission and the spread actually received.

That example is illustrative, not a current quote. Use each broker’s live pricing page and the commission schedule for your account entity. Minimum spreads are not average spreads, and they are least useful during news releases, market openings, and thin liquidity.
Which broker is cheaper?
Pepperstone often has the stronger headline proposition for high-volume traders using its raw-spread account. OANDA can be competitive when its commission pricing is available and when the trader values flexible sizing or a particular execution setup. A casual trader may find that the difference in headline spread matters less than overnight financing and the number of trades made.
To compare properly, record the following for the exact currency pair:
- Typical spread during the hours you trade, not just the minimum advertised spread.
- Commission for opening and closing the position.
- Swap or overnight financing for long and short positions.
- Currency-conversion charges if your account currency differs from the trade’s profit currency.
- Any guaranteed-stop, data, platform or inactivity fee.
Platforms and tools
| Platform or tool | Pepperstone | OANDA |
|---|---|---|
| Proprietary web platform | Availability depends on region; third-party platforms are a major part of the offering. | OANDA’s own web platform is central to the service in supported regions. |
| Mobile app | Broker and supported platform apps vary by region. | OANDA offers its own mobile trading app in addition to selected third-party options. |
| MetaTrader 4 | Commonly available | Available in some regions |
| MetaTrader 5 | Commonly available | Availability varies by legal entity; do not assume it is offered everywhere. |
| cTrader | A major Pepperstone platform option in supported markets | Not generally the core OANDA platform |
| TradingView | Available in selected regions | Available in selected regions |
| API access | Automation can be built through supported platforms and integrations. | OANDA is well known for REST API access in supported accounts. |
Choose the platform before opening the account. A trader who needs cTrader, a particular MT5 expert advisor, or TradingView order execution should confirm the exact Pepperstone or OANDA entity that supports it. Platform access can also vary by instrument: a broker may support TradingView for forex but not every CFD product.

OANDA’s interface is usually the less complicated starting point for someone who wants to place ordinary market, limit and stop orders without configuring a third-party terminal. Pepperstone is often better for traders who want depth-of-market tools, automated strategies, custom indicators or a choice of specialist interfaces.
Position size, leverage and risk
OANDA’s ability to support very small forex positions is a meaningful difference. Smaller units let a new trader risk a more controlled dollar amount and make it easier to size a trade from a fixed percentage of account equity.
Rank #3
Pepperstone generally uses conventional lot-based sizing, although the minimum trade size and increments depend on the instrument and platform. This is not necessarily a problem: most active traders use micro-lots or standard lot fractions. It matters more if your account is small or you are testing a strategy with minimal exposure.
Leverage is set by the local regulator and client classification. Retail clients in the UK and Europe face much lower maximum leverage than professional clients. Australian and other international accounts may have different limits. U.S. forex accounts also have their own regulatory restrictions.
High leverage does not reduce risk. It reduces the deposit needed to control a position, which can make losses accumulate quickly. Set the position size from the stop-loss distance and the amount you can afford to lose—not from the maximum margin the broker permits.
Overnight financing and holding costs
If you keep a leveraged position open beyond the broker’s daily cutoff, the broker normally applies overnight financing. The charge depends on the instrument, direction, benchmark interest rates, broker markup and the number of days covered. Some products apply a multi-day adjustment at the end of the trading week.
For a short-term trader who closes before the daily cutoff, spread and commission may dominate the comparison. For a swing trader, financing can be more important than a fraction of a pip saved at entry.
Before trading, open the instrument’s specifications or financing table and compare both long and short rates. A position that appears profitable before financing can lose money after several weeks of holding costs.

Find the legal entity in the account-opening form, client agreement or footer of the broker’s website. Confirm it with the relevant regulator’s register rather than relying only on a logo displayed on a marketing page.
Pepperstone is not generally available to U.S. retail traders. OANDA has a U.S. retail forex business, but U.S. customers cannot simply use the products offered by OANDA’s international entities. U.S. forex rules also affect hedging, position handling, leverage and order treatment.
Who should choose Pepperstone?
Pepperstone is the stronger candidate if you:
- trade forex or CFDs frequently;
- want raw spreads plus a transparent commission;
- use MT4, MT5 or cTrader;
- need automated trading, custom indicators or specialist charting;
- are comfortable comparing financing and execution costs yourself;
- live in a country where the desired Pepperstone entity and platform are available.
It is less attractive if you want a simple, investment-style account, a broad range of unleveraged funds, or a very small trade size without checking the platform’s minimum order rules.
Who should choose OANDA?
OANDA may suit you better if you:
- primarily trade forex;
- want to start with small units rather than conventional lots;
- prefer a proprietary web or mobile interface;
- want API access for systematic trading;
- need a broker that accepts eligible U.S. retail forex customers;
- do not need Pepperstone’s particular cTrader or raw-spread workflow.
OANDA is less suitable if your priority is the broadest possible CFD catalogue or a specialist platform that it does not support in your country.

- Select your country. Remove any broker or product that is not legally available to you.
- Write down the instruments you actually trade. Check that the pair, index, share or commodity is offered by the relevant entity.
- Choose your platform. Confirm MT4, MT5, cTrader, TradingView, API or proprietary-platform access before applying.
- Calculate an all-in round trip. Include the spread and both sides of any commission.
- Check holding costs. Compare long and short overnight rates if you hold positions after the daily cutoff.
- Check minimum size and margin. Make sure the smallest available trade allows sensible risk management.
- Read the funding and withdrawal terms. Bank-transfer timing, card rules and conversion costs can affect practical cost.
- Test with a demo account. Compare order tickets, charting, stop placement and statements before depositing meaningful funds.
When using a live account, review the broker’s fee statement rather than relying on a calculator based on advertised spreads. In OANDA’s interface, look for the account history or transaction statement. In Pepperstone, check the relevant platform’s account history and the broker’s trade confirmation. The statement shows what you actually paid.
FAQ
Is Pepperstone safer than OANDA?
Neither brand is automatically safer worldwide. Safety depends on the regulated legal entity, client-money rules, compensation scheme and negative-balance protections that apply in your country. Verify the entity in the client agreement and with the local regulator.
Which broker has lower spreads, Pepperstone or OANDA?
Pepperstone often advertises very competitive raw spreads on its Razor account, while OANDA offers spread-only and, in some regions, commission-based pricing. The cheaper option depends on the actual spread received, commission, trade size, funding and conversion costs.

Can I use Pepperstone in the United States?
Pepperstone generally does not accept U.S. retail customers. U.S. residents should compare brokers that are registered and authorised to provide retail forex services in the United States.
Does OANDA offer CFDs?
Some OANDA international entities offer CFDs, but the product is not universally available. U.S. customers, in particular, receive a different forex-focused product range. Select your country on OANDA’s website before relying on any market list.
Is Pepperstone good for beginners?
It can be, especially if you want MT4, MT5 or cTrader, but its range of platforms and leveraged products can be more complex than a proprietary forex app. A beginner should start with a demo account, understand margin and use a position size that limits the loss.
Which broker is better for scalping?
Pepperstone is often considered a strong fit for active traders because of its raw-spread account and platform selection. That does not guarantee better scalping results. Execution speed, slippage, commission and the strategy’s trading hours must be tested on the specific account.

These brokers are primarily designed for leveraged forex and CFD trading. A share CFD does not give you the same ownership rights as buying the underlying share. For long-term investments, compare a regulated investment platform that offers direct shares, funds and suitable tax wrappers.
The Bottom Line
Choose Pepperstone if you are an active forex or CFD trader who wants raw-spread pricing, MT4/MT5 or cTrader, and a broad trading-toolset. Choose OANDA if you want a simpler forex experience, very small position sizes, API access, or—where eligible—a U.S. retail forex account.
Do not decide from a single advertised spread. Confirm the legal entity, calculate the complete round-trip cost, check overnight financing and make sure the platform and minimum trade size fit your strategy. Both are leveraged-trading brokers, not substitutes for a diversified long-term investment account.
