There is no single online sales channel that is best for every seller—or a channel that guarantees more profit. The right mix depends on what you sell, where you can sell it, how customers find it, and the fees and work involved in fulfilling orders. These 11 options cover seller-owned stores, marketplaces, social commerce, product-discovery tools, and specialist or wholesale platforms.
How to choose an online sales channel
A marketplace puts products in front of shoppers browsing a third-party platform; a seller-owned website gives a business its own storefront. Neither route guarantees traffic or sales. Third-party platforms can bring a different kind of discovery, while an owned store gives the seller more control over how the brand is presented. OECD describes digital intermediaries as third parties that facilitate buyer-seller transactions, often for a fee.
Before committing, compare each option against the practical costs and requirements that affect your business:
- Product and audience fit: Does the channel suit your products and the way likely customers shop?
- Eligibility and geography: Can your business and products qualify in the country you want to serve?
- Total cost: Include plan and referral fees, fulfillment, shipping, returns, advertising, and the time required to operate the channel.
- Fulfillment and service: Decide who will ship orders, handle returns, and respond to customers.
- Control and dependence: Consider how much you want to rely on a third-party platform versus your own storefront.
- Operational capacity: Account for product catalog updates, inventory accuracy, order routing, and reporting across channels.
There is no directly comparable evidence establishing which of these channels produces the most profit or highest conversion rate across sellers. Estimate profitability using your own margins and channel-specific costs rather than treating reach as a proxy for profit.

11 online sales channels to consider
1. Your own ecommerce website
A seller-owned website is a direct storefront where you control how your brand and products are presented. It can also serve as the hub for other sales channels. Shopify, for example, lets merchants connect channels and manage connected products and orders through its admin, while its Online Store supports selling through a merchant’s own Shopify website. An owned site does not automatically attract visitors; plan how customers will discover it.
2. Amazon
Amazon is a general marketplace where shoppers browse many kinds of products. Its US seller pricing page lists an Individual selling plan at $0.99 per item sold and a Professional plan at $39.99 per month. These are plan fees, not a full estimate of the cost to sell: referral fees vary by category, and fulfillment can add costs. Check current terms for your country and product category before calculating margins. Amazon seller pricing
3. eBay
eBay is an established third-party marketplace. Its usefulness depends on whether your products and buyers fit the platform; the available evidence does not establish a universal seller profile or fee for eBay. Check current, market-specific seller terms before listing. Amazon announced a US rollout of tools for connecting eBay accounts to Seller Central, but that announcement is not evidence that the feature is available to every seller or in every market. Amazon’s multichannel selling announcement
4. Walmart Marketplace
Walmart Marketplace can suit sellers whose business, catalog, and fulfillment operation meet its requirements. For the US Marketplace, Walmart’s guide says signup is free and sellers pay referral fees on items sold. The guide, last updated September 2, 2026, lists requirements that include identity and business documents, evidence of marketplace or ecommerce history, products with GS1 GTIN/UPC prefix numbers, policy-compliant products, and a US B2C warehouse with returns capability or use of Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS). These are documented US requirements, not universal rules for Walmart marketplaces in other countries.

5. Etsy
Etsy is another marketplace to evaluate for your products and buyers. One documented limitation concerns a specific integration, not Etsy seller eligibility: Shopify Marketplace Connect currently does not allow new Etsy connections through the app, although existing connections can continue. That does not establish Etsy’s direct signup rules, fees, or suitability. Check Etsy’s current seller policies and terms before deciding.
6. Facebook commerce
Facebook is a social commerce option for selling through a social platform. Available storefront, catalog, and checkout features can depend on seller eligibility, product rules, and country. Confirm which features are available for your business and target market.
7. Instagram commerce
Instagram is a separate social commerce channel to assess if it fits how your customers discover products. Do not assume that every seller can use the same catalog or checkout features: availability and rules vary by market and eligibility.

8. TikTok commerce

Shopify identifies Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok as social commerce channels, but that does not establish universal access to the same selling or checkout features. Shopify’s sales-channel overview
9. Google Shopping and YouTube Shopping
Google Shopping and YouTube Shopping are product-discovery and advertising routes, rather than conventional marketplace listings in the same sense as Amazon or Walmart. Shopify says its Google & YouTube channel can sync products to Google Merchant Center for Google Shopping ads and YouTube Shopping. Check current Google and YouTube seller requirements before relying on a particular checkout path. Shopify’s marketplace and channel guide
10. Shop and Shopify Collective
These are options within the Shopify ecosystem, not independent marketplaces in the same sense as Amazon or Walmart. Shopify describes Shop as a curated product experience for loyal shoppers. 11. Specialist and B2B marketplaces
A specialist marketplace may make more sense than a broad platform when its category or transaction format matches your product. Examples documented by Shopify include Faire for B2B wholesale between brands and retailers; Newegg for electronics and home technology; StockX for sneakers, streetwear, and collectibles; and Whatnot for auctions of brands and specialty goods in live shows. These are examples, not an exhaustive list. Confirm current seller requirements, fees, and country availability with each platform. Shopify’s marketplace channel examples

Selling through several channels can give customers more ways to encounter your products, but it also adds work. Shopify says merchants can use one or several sales channels and manage connected products and orders through its admin. Its Marketplace Connect app supports Amazon and Walmart listings, subject to marketplace-account verification and other requirements; new Etsy connections are currently unavailable through that app. Integration availability and rollout can change.
Amazon’s 2026 announcement describes a gradual US rollout of Seller Central tools that connect eBay, Shopify, TikTok, and Walmart accounts, import and link off-Amazon listings, show multichannel sales and orders, and support fulfillment across channels. Treat this as a developing, US-scoped feature, not a function guaranteed to be available to every seller. Amazon also said independent sellers drive more than 60% of sales in Amazon’s store; that is Amazon’s statement about its own store, not a statistic for ecommerce overall. Amazon’s announcement and rollout details
Before adding a channel, work out how you will keep listings and stock accurate, prevent overselling, route orders, handle returns, and reconcile sales and costs. Integration tools may help connect systems, but sellers still need a process for operating them.

How to assess whether a channel can be profitable
Compare expected revenue with the costs specific to that channel and product. Include selling-plan and referral fees, payment or fulfillment costs where applicable, shipping, returns, advertising, and the labor needed to manage listings and orders. Amazon’s plan fees and category-dependent referral fees, and Walmart’s referral fees, show why a free signup or a large audience alone cannot tell you whether a channel will be profitable.
Use your own product margins and likely order economics to compare alternatives. A channel with a good audience fit may still be a poor financial choice if its fees, fulfillment demands, or return costs leave too little margin. Conversely, a channel with more setup work may be reasonable if the product and audience fit your business. Avoid relying on sales claims that do not match your market, product, and operating costs.

Platform examples and feature descriptions above are based on the linked Shopify, Walmart, and Amazon documentation. Walmart requirements and Amazon plan prices are specifically identified as US information; platform features, fees, eligibility, and geographic availability can change.
