Form 1040 is the annual U.S. federal individual income tax return. A Form 1099 is an information return that reports a particular type of payment or income. A 1099 may help you prepare a 1040, but it does not replace the return.

Form 1040 and Form 1099 have different jobs

Question Form 1040 Form 1099 series
What is it? The individual’s annual federal income tax return. IRS: About Form 1040 A series of information returns used to report specified types of payments or income. IRS: About Form 1099
Who files it? The individual taxpayer files the return when required. The payer or other reporting organization generally files the applicable form with the IRS and sends a copy to the recipient.
What does it cover? The taxpayer’s overall income, deductions, credits and tax for the year, with schedules as needed. A particular payment or transaction. The relevant tax treatment depends on the form and the income involved.
What does the recipient do? Uses the return to report tax-year information and determine tax owed or a refund. Uses the statement as one record while preparing a return, following that form’s instructions.

How a 1099 fits into filing a 1040

  1. The payer reports a payment. If a payment falls under an information-reporting requirement, the payer files the applicable form with the IRS and furnishes a copy to you. The IRS says recipients commonly receive these documents in January or February. IRS: Gather your documents
  2. You collect your tax records. Bring together the 1099 statement, wage statements and other records relevant to your income and tax situation.
  3. You follow the instructions for that form. “1099” is a series, not a single income category. The form type matters; do not assume every 1099 belongs on the same line or schedule.
  4. You prepare Form 1040 if required. Report your overall tax-year information using the current Form 1040 and relevant schedule instructions. The IRS provides forms and filing options, including free online options for eligible taxpayers. IRS: Free File

Does receiving a 1099 mean you must file a tax return?

Not by itself. Whether you must file depends on your tax-year circumstances, including filing status, age, income and special rules. Likewise, not receiving a 1099 does not by itself establish that you have no taxable income or no filing obligation. Check the IRS filing requirements for the tax year and your situation rather than using one form as the test. IRS: Check if you need to file a tax return

For tax year 2025, the IRS’s general table lists gross income of $15,750 or more as the filing threshold for a single filer under 65, and $31,500 or more for married filing jointly when both spouses are under 65. The IRS also identifies more than $400 in net self-employment earnings as a filing trigger. These are examples, not a complete decision tree; other circumstances can change the result. A payer’s 1099-NEC threshold is not a tax-free allowance

For specified payments reported on Form 1099-NEC, IRS guidance states a payer reporting threshold of $600 for payments made before 2026 and $2,000 for payments made in 2026. This is a payer’s information-reporting rule, not a general threshold for whether income is taxable or whether the recipient must file. Do not treat income below the reporting threshold as automatically tax-free or irrelevant to your return. IRS: Instructions for Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC

What to do if a 1099 is missing or looks wrong

  • Check your records and contact the payer. A payer that reports a covered payment is generally responsible for furnishing you a copy. Ask the payer to provide or correct the form if needed.
  • Use the correct form instructions. The tax treatment depends on what the payment was for and which 1099 you received, not just the word “1099.”
  • Keep your own records. A statement is one source of information about a payment; retain relevant invoices, payment records and other documents needed to prepare an accurate return.
