Mastercard announced Crypto Source on October 17, 2022, as a bank-facing program for offering crypto-asset services through existing banking apps and interfaces. It was not a Mastercard crypto exchange, retail wallet or standalone trading website.
The proposed model placed crypto trading and custody with Paxos Trust Company, while Mastercard supplied integration, identity, security, analytics, monitoring and program-management support. A participating bank or financial institution would ultimately decide how—and whether—to make the service available to its customers.
What Mastercard Crypto Source was designed to do
Crypto Source was intended to help banks add crypto buying, holding and selling to channels customers already use, such as online banking or a mobile banking app. Instead of building a crypto platform from scratch, a financial institution could use Mastercard’s technology and partner support to connect crypto services to its own customer experience.
The announcement described three main roles:
| Participant | Expected responsibility |
|---|---|
| Paxos Trust Company | Provide crypto-asset trading and custody services on behalf of participating banks. |
| Mastercard | Help integrate those services and provide identity, security, analytics, transaction monitoring and program-management capabilities. |
| Bank or financial institution | Offer the service to customers under its own product, regulatory, compliance and customer-support framework. |
That structure matters for consumers. Crypto Source did not mean that Mastercard itself would hold customers’ coins or operate an exchange account for the public. The bank and its crypto-service partners would determine the customer relationship, available assets, fees, limits and custody arrangements.

What services were included
Mastercard’s announcement described a broader package rather than a single trading screen. The proposed capabilities included:
- Buying, holding and selling selected crypto assets.
- Identity verification and related identity solutions.
- Crypto analytics and transaction monitoring.
- Anti-money-laundering and Know Your Business services.
- Cybersecurity and biometric tools.
- Crypto spending and cash-out products, including crypto cards, open-banking services and cross-border services.
- Program design, product development, implementation, marketing consultancy and go-to-market support.
The phrase “selected crypto assets” is important. Mastercard did not publish a universal list of supported coins. The assets offered by one bank could therefore differ from those offered by another bank or in another country.
Was Crypto Source available to everyone?
No. Mastercard’s October 2022 announcement said Crypto Source was being prepared for pilot programs and that further availability details would come later. It did not announce a public launch date, universal bank access or a consumer sign-up process.
There was also no public directory identifying every participating bank or fintech. A bank would still need to address applicable licensing, custody, anti-money-laundering, sanctions, consumer-protection and local-market requirements before offering crypto trading.

How a customer might encounter a bank-delivered crypto service
There is no universal Mastercard menu path for Crypto Source. Mastercard did not publish a standard customer workflow, button label, API reference or command syntax.
If a bank implemented the capability, the customer-facing process would be supplied and branded by that institution. A typical bank could place crypto access inside its own app, but the exact route might look something like a bank-specific “Investments,” “Digital assets” or “Crypto” section. Those labels are examples—not official Crypto Source instructions.
Before using any bank-provided crypto feature, check the bank’s own documentation for:
- Which crypto assets are available.
- Whether the bank, Paxos or another provider holds custody.
- Trading spreads, commissions and withdrawal charges.
- Minimum and maximum order sizes.
- Whether transfers to an external wallet are allowed.
- How tax records and transaction histories are supplied.
- What happens if trading, withdrawals or the provider’s service is suspended.
Crypto Source versus Mastercard Crypto Secure
Crypto Source and Crypto Secure were separate products announced in October 2022.
Crypto Source concerned the infrastructure and partner support needed for banks to offer crypto trading and related services to their customers.

Mastercard Crypto Secure was an issuer-facing risk and compliance product. It was designed to help card issuers assess crypto exchanges and virtual-asset service providers, monitor crypto-purchase exposure and make transaction approval decisions.
Crypto Secure included a colour-coded dashboard with information about crypto-purchase activity and risk. Mastercard said issuers could use it to identify crypto exchanges, measure approvals and declines, assess portfolio exposure and compare risk with peer institutions. The tool does not make the final decision automatically: Mastercard’s product documentation says the issuer retains responsibility for approving or declining a transaction.

In short, Crypto Source was about offering crypto services through a financial institution. Crypto Secure was about helping card issuers evaluate risk associated with crypto transactions and providers.
It was not the same as the Crypto Card Program
Mastercard’s current Crypto Card Program is also distinct from Crypto Source. The card program focuses on spending crypto or stablecoins through payment cards. Mastercard says crypto is generally converted to fiat before reaching the Mastercard network, with supported assets and availability depending on the partner and region.
That means a Mastercard-linked crypto card should not be assumed to settle ordinary card transactions directly in cryptocurrency. Mastercard describes stablecoin settlement as an optional capability in select markets, not the standard architecture for every Mastercard card transaction.

The Crypto Partner Program announced on March 11, 2026, is different again. Mastercard describes it as a collaboration forum involving crypto-native companies, payment providers and financial institutions. The announcement does not present it as a replacement retail trading platform or as the original Crypto Source service.

What consumers should not assume
| Claim | What the announcement supports |
|---|---|
| “Mastercard launched a crypto exchange for banks.” | Not accurate. Paxos was identified as the trading and custody provider on behalf of banks; Mastercard supplied integration and related program services. |
| “Any bank can immediately add crypto trading.” | Not established. Crypto Source was being prepared for pilots, and banks would face regulatory and operational requirements. |
| “Crypto Source supports Bitcoin, Ethereum and a fixed coin list.” | Not established. Mastercard referred to selected crypto assets without publishing a universal list. |
| “Crypto Source means Mastercard holds my crypto.” | Not supported. The announcement assigned custody services to Paxos on behalf of participating banks. |
| “Mastercard card purchases are settled directly in crypto.” | Generally wrong for the standard card model. Crypto is converted to fiat before reaching the Mastercard network, subject to product and market differences. |
What to verify before buying crypto through a bank
A familiar banking interface does not remove crypto-specific risks. Before placing an order, confirm the legal entity providing the service, how assets are safeguarded, and whether balances receive any deposit-insurance protection. Bank branding alone does not necessarily mean crypto assets are covered like cash deposits.
Also compare the total cost of a transaction. A platform may charge an explicit commission, build a spread into the quoted price, charge for withdrawals, or impose limits on transfers. Ask whether the quoted price is guaranteed, how quickly an order executes and whether the bank can pause trading during periods of market stress.
Finally, keep independent records. Crypto trades can create tax-reporting obligations, and the bank’s year-end statement may not contain every detail needed for your tax return—especially if assets can be transferred to or from an external wallet.

The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Does Mastercard settle card purchases directly in cryptocurrency?
Not under the standard card model. Mastercard’s current Crypto Card Program documentation says crypto is converted to fiat before reaching the Mastercard network. Supported assets and settlement options vary by partner and region.
The Bottom Line
Mastercard Crypto Source was announced as bank-facing crypto infrastructure, not as a Mastercard exchange or universal consumer app. Paxos was expected to provide trading and custody, while Mastercard handled integration and supporting identity, security and compliance capabilities. The original announcement covered pilot preparation rather than general availability, and Mastercard did not publish a universal coin list, fee schedule, bank directory or customer interface. Anyone offered crypto through a bank should therefore read that institution’s terms carefully instead of assuming that Mastercard’s name determines the assets, custody model or protections involved.
