A useful starting point is to shop by budget band, then judge each vehicle by its model year, mileage, service history, title and accident records, and condition—not by a reliability ranking alone. Current rankings support several candidates below $15,000 to $40,000, but the evidence does not establish ten models that are all simultaneously cheap and reliably trouble-free.
Reliable used luxury SUVs by budget
iSeeCars’ 2026 ranking identifies these model-year examples as its most reliable used luxury midsize SUV choices within particular price thresholds. Those thresholds are ranking categories, not guaranteed asking prices or assurances about any individual vehicle.

Other candidates depend on the model year
Consumer Reports’ 2025 Buying Guide includes selected used model years of the Acura RDX, BMW X3, Lexus NX, Lexus RX, and Lexus GX among its above-average-reliability choices. The selections vary by model and year: the guide includes Acura RDX entries such as 2016, 2020, and 2021–2023, and BMW X3 entries such as 2016, 2018, and 2021–2022. Treat each listed year as a specific candidate; a favorable selection does not extend automatically to every year, trim, or vehicle.

Use a mainstream SUV as a value check
If your main objective is dependable transportation at the lowest purchase price, compare a premium-badged SUV with a non-luxury alternative. Edmunds’ under-$15,000 used-car recommendations, carried by the Associated Press in 2024, selected the 2014–2019 Toyota Highlander as its midsize SUV pick. Edmunds highlighted 2017–2019 improvements including more power and fuel efficiency, plus added driver-assistance features.

The Highlander is not a luxury SUV. Its role in the comparison is to help you decide whether an older premium model’s comfort and features are worth the likely added ownership costs. The cited recommendation does not establish that a Highlander or any luxury candidate will meet a particular local asking price or be in good condition. What reliability ratings can—and cannot—tell you
Reliability rankings summarize evidence using a publisher’s own data, sample, definition, and scoring method. They can help narrow a search, but they do not establish the condition of an individual used SUV or predict its future repair needs. Keep each score attached to its publisher and year rather than comparing unlike scales as if they measured the same thing.

For context, Lexus ranked highest overall in J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, with 140 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), against an industry average of 202 PP100. The study measures problems after three years of ownership. These are brand-level results for newer vehicles; they do not prove that a particular older Lexus is dependable. J.D. Once a candidate fits your budget, evaluate the vehicle in front of you. A lower price or a favorable model-year ranking cannot make up for neglected maintenance, accident damage, or a problematic title.

- Compare actual listings. Check the asking price against similar examples in your area, matching model year and trim where possible. Consider mileage and condition rather than treating a ranking’s price threshold as a market guarantee.
- Review maintenance records. Look for a consistent service history and investigate gaps or signs of neglect. Edmunds advises buyers to inspect closely for neglect and abuse.
- Check title and accident history. Obtain a vehicle-history report and verify that the records match the seller’s account. A report is one screening tool, not a substitute for examining the vehicle.
- Check recalls by VIN. Use the vehicle identification number to look for open recalls and confirm whether required work has been completed.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Have a qualified mechanic assess the vehicle before you commit. A consumer OBD-II code reader can be an optional preliminary check, but it cannot replace an inspection or guarantee mechanical soundness.
