Before you buy a Toyota Highlander, compare the exact vehicle’s price, powertrain, seating, warranty and condition—not just its model name. For the 2026 U.S. lineup, Toyota lists gas and hybrid versions, standard all-wheel drive, and different fuel-economy estimates; used vehicles require a VIN-level recall check, records review and independent inspection.
1. Compare gas and hybrid costs against how you drive
Toyota’s U.S. figures for the 2026 Highlander are estimates: 24 mpg combined for gas models and 35 mpg combined for hybrids. The 2026 brochure gives more detail: listed gas trims are rated at 21 city, 28 highway and 24 combined; Hybrid XLE is rated at 35 city, 35 highway and 35 combined, while Hybrid Limited and Platinum are rated at 35 city, 34 highway and 35 combined. These are not guarantees of what an individual driver will achieve. Toyota’s September 5, 2025 announcement and its 2026 Highlander brochure describe the model-year figures.
Compare the actual purchase price and financing for the trims you are considering, then estimate fuel spending using your annual mileage and local fuel costs. A hybrid’s higher quoted mpg does not by itself show which vehicle will cost less overall; the price difference, driving pattern and ownership period matter.
2. Verify the drivetrain and seating in the specific vehicle
Toyota says all 2026 U.S. Highlander gas and hybrid grades have standard all-wheel drive. That is a model-year statement, not a reason to assume a used Highlander has the same drivetrain. Check the VIN, window sticker or vehicle documents, especially when comparing listings from different years.

The 2026 configuration described by Toyota seats seven with second-row captain’s chairs. Select grades offer a second-row bench and seating for up to eight. Confirm the actual second-row layout and test all intended passenger seats with the cargo you expect to carry; listings can omit or misstate configuration details. Toyota notes that features and packages may depend on region and availability. See its 2026 model announcement and brochure.
3. Check the vehicle’s actual towing limits
Toyota lists a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds for 2026 gas models. Do not apply that model-level figure to every Highlander year, powertrain or equipment configuration. Before towing, consult the specific vehicle’s manual and ratings, account for its equipment and loading limits, and calculate the loaded trailer and vehicle weights. Toyota cautions owners not to exceed the published capacity. Toyota’s 2026 announcement and brochure provide the model-year reference.

4. Treat warranty coverage as specific to the car
Toyota describes general new-vehicle basic coverage of 36 months or 36,000 miles and powertrain coverage of 60 months or 60,000 miles. For Toyota hybrid vehicles beginning with model year 2020, Toyota says the high-voltage battery warranty is 10 years from first use or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. Applicable warranty terms govern coverage; check the warranty guide for the vehicle’s year and establish its first-use date and mileage before counting on remaining protection. Toyota’s warranty and owner resources provide year-specific materials.
5. Understand what Toyota certification does—and does not—tell you
Toyota describes Gold and Silver certified-used coverage levels, with benefits that differ by certification. Toyota Owners lists a 160-point inspection for certified vehicles and a 174-point standard for used hybrids. Ask the seller for the vehicle’s inspection documents and written warranty and roadside-assistance terms, and confirm its certification level. The inspection and certification are useful documentation, not an independent reliability rating or a substitute for checking the particular vehicle’s history and condition. Toyota’s certified-used and vehicle resources describe program information; the vehicle’s paperwork controls.

6. Check the VIN for recalls before purchase
Run the vehicle identification number through the NHTSA recall lookup and ask the seller for documentation of completed recall work. A model name or a seller’s assurance does not establish the status of a particular VIN. A lookup result is specific to that vehicle and should be checked again if you are evaluating another car.
7. Request records, then arrange an independent inspection
Ask for maintenance, repair, accident and ownership records. A vehicle-history report can help organize what is known, but it is not a mechanical inspection and may not contain every event. Have an independent mechanic inspect the specific Highlander and conduct a road test. At a minimum, ask them to assess:

These are general used-car checks, not claims that Highlanders have a particular recurring defect. The sources available do not establish model-year-specific mechanical problems or reliability rankings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. For a hybrid, check remaining coverage—not just the warranty headline
The published 10-year/150,000-mile high-voltage battery term for Toyota hybrid vehicles beginning with model year 2020 runs from first use or until the mileage limit, whichever comes first. A used hybrid may have part—or none—of that term remaining. Verify the first-use date, odometer reading and applicable warranty guide, and ask the inspector to assess hybrid-system operation. Toyota’s warranty resources are organized by vehicle and model year.

9. Compare new and used offers on the same financial terms
A new Highlander’s trim equipment, available packages and local inventory can vary by region and availability. For a used vehicle, include its history, inspection findings, remaining warranty and any certified-used coverage in the comparison. Evaluate the actual transaction price and financing alongside expected fuel costs; a lower sticker price does not capture the full cost or condition of the vehicle.
| What to compare | New Highlander | Used Highlander |
|---|---|---|
| Price and financing | Dealer quote, trim, options and applicable offer | Asking and negotiated price, financing, mileage and condition |
| Configuration | Confirm the VIN, trim, drivetrain and seat layout on the actual vehicle | Match the listing to the VIN, model year, trim, powertrain and equipment |
| Fuel costs | Use the estimate for the exact powertrain and your expected driving | Use the correct year and powertrain information; actual fuel use varies |
| Protection | Review the applicable new-vehicle warranty guide | Establish remaining factory coverage or verify written certified-used terms |
| Condition and history | Check delivery condition and included equipment | Review records, check recalls and obtain an independent inspection |
10. Match every document to the VIN and model year
Before signing, make sure the VIN, title, odometer, model year, trim and powertrain agree across the listing and paperwork. Check the correct year’s owner’s manual and warranty guide for the vehicle’s equipment, maintenance schedule and limits. Toyota maintains Highlander owner-manual and warranty resources; manuals can also be purchased through Toyota. Confirm local inventory, any offer, recall status, records and warranty terms at the point of sale.
