Starting an indie business is less about building a long feature list and more about reducing uncertainty: find a real problem, learn how people handle it now, and look for evidence that they will use or pay for a better solution. These ten lessons synthesize guidance from Y Combinator, Stripe, and founder discussions; they are not an official or definitive checklist. If you are asking how to validate a business idea—or how to know whether anyone will pay for it—start with the people who might actually become customers.
1. Start with a problem and a customer
Define who has the problem, when it occurs, and what they do about it today. “A tool for freelancers” is too broad to guide a useful test; “independent designers who lose time turning client notes into project updates” points toward a specific person and situation.
Stripe’s startup guide treats identifying intended customers and researching the market as part of validating an idea: How to validate a business idea. Begin with the customer and their current workaround, not the features you would enjoy building.
2. Check whether the work fits you
An idea can be attractive and still be a poor fit for your skills, resources, or preferred lifestyle. Before committing substantial time or money, ask what capabilities the business needs, which you already have, and what you could realistically learn or obtain. Also consider the ongoing work: customer support, sales, maintenance, and product updates may matter as much as the initial build.

- Foldable, Portable & Ready to Go: Maximize your productivity anywhere. The dual-foldable design allows the stand to collapse completely flat in seconds. Easily slip it into your backpack or briefcase, making it the ultimate portable office accessory for business trips, cafes, or hybrid work setups.
This is not a reason to wait until you feel perfectly prepared. It is a way to notice constraints early and choose a test that matches what you can actually do.
3. Study the alternatives customers already use
Look at direct competitors, but also at spreadsheets, manual services, general-purpose software, and doing nothing. Existing alternatives can show that people already spend effort or money on the problem. Their shortcomings may reveal a segment you can serve better.
Competition is not proof that a new entrant has a viable business. Identify what a specific group finds inadequate, and ask whether you can offer a meaningful difference that customers care about. A broad claim such as “simpler” or “cheaper” is not enough unless it addresses a real buying reason.
4. Talk to people who resemble likely buyers
Conversations are most useful when the person has the problem you are investigating. Friends, fellow founders, or online community members may be supportive, but their praise is weak market evidence if they are unlikely to buy.

Ask about recent behavior rather than hypothetical enthusiasm: What happened the last time the problem came up? How did they handle it? What did that cost in time, effort, or money? What have they already tried? Y Combinator’s startup advice emphasizes talking to users and learning from them: How to get startup ideas.
5. Give more weight to actions than compliments
“That sounds useful” is easy to say and does not establish intent to buy. A signup, a request for a demo, a preorder, a payment, or repeated use asks the prospective customer to do something. These signals are generally more informative than compliments, but none guarantees a viable market.
Interpret a signal in context. A signup may reflect curiosity rather than purchase intent; a preorder is closer to a buying decision, but still comes from a limited set of people and depends on the offer and audience. Validation is about gathering evidence, not finding one magic test that proves success.
6. Build the smallest useful test
A minimum viable product (MVP) is the simplest version that can solve a relevant problem for an intended audience and help you learn. It is not an excuse to release something unusable, nor does every idea require a full software product as its first test.

A landing page or presale may test interest before a full build. Interviews can help explain the problem; a page can test whether a message prompts action; an MVP can reveal whether people can use the solution and return to it. Choose the test based on the uncertainty you need to reduce, and raise the evidence bar as the time and money required to build increase.
Y Combinator advises founders to launch early so they can understand customers’ problems and whether a product meets their needs: YC’s Essential Startup Advice. Early does not mean careless: give people something useful enough to learn from, then improve it.
7. Find the first users yourself
Do not assume a launch announcement will bring customers. Early on, finding users may mean identifying people who fit the target, contacting them directly, explaining the product, and helping them get started. Paul Graham describes this kind of hands-on work as a common early-stage task in Do Things That Don’t Scale.
Manual outreach and onboarding take time, but they can show where people hesitate, what they misunderstand, and what made them agree to try the product. Treat those interactions as part of learning how to reach and serve customers—not as a permanent substitute for a sustainable way to acquire them.

8. Make early users feel heard without letting one user set the roadmap
Being small can make it easier to respond quickly, observe someone using the product, and understand a support problem in detail. Follow up on confusion and look for repeated requests or obstacles across users.
One demanding customer may have a genuine need that is unusually specific. Before building for it, ask whether the request points to the broader problem you set out to solve or would pull the product toward a different audience. Feedback is useful evidence, not an automatic instruction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Choose a few measures that match the business
Track a small number of measures tied to what you need to learn at this stage. Depending on the product, that might mean whether people complete a key action, return to use it, ask for a paid plan, or become customers. There is no universal metric or target prescribed by the cited startup guidance.
Pair the numbers with direct feedback. A metric can show that behavior changed; conversations and observation can help explain why. Use what you learn to make a focused change, then see whether it improves the behavior you care about.

10. Treat launch as the start of the work
Launching can put a product in front of initial users, but it does not finish validation or solve customer acquisition. Continue learning about the problem, how people discover the product, and whether the experience gives them a reason to stay or pay.
If the evidence weakens, do not default to adding features. Revisit who the customer is, whether the problem matters enough, whether the offer is clear, and whether the product addresses the problem. A change in direction should respond to what people do and tell you, not just to the discomfort of a quiet launch.
How to validate an idea: choose a test for the uncertainty
Validation methods answer different questions. Use the least costly test that can meaningfully reduce the uncertainty in front of you; a stated preference, a sign-up, a purchase, and sustained use are not interchangeable.
| Test | What it can help you learn | Signal and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Customer conversation | Whether a relevant person experiences the problem and how they handle it now | Explains context and past behavior; stated interest alone does not establish a purchase |
| Landing page | Whether a specific audience responds to a clear description or offer | A signup is an action, but may show curiosity rather than willingness to pay |
| Presale or preorder | Whether someone will commit money to the proposed offer | Closer to a purchase than a compliment or signup; a limited test does not guarantee broader demand |
| Simple MVP | Whether people can use the solution and whether it addresses the problem in practice | Observed usage can reveal friction and repeat interest; building it costs more than a conversation or page |
The table describes general trade-offs, not fixed costs or timelines: those depend on the audience, offer, and product. Stripe’s guide discusses customer research, MVPs, tests of interest, and feedback as connected parts of validation: Stripe’s idea-validation guide.
