There is no single official ranking of the “world’s smallest and richest countries”: size and economic output are separate measures, and the answer changes with the definitions used. Here, “smallest” means sovereign states ordered by total area, while “richest” is discussed using GDP per capita in current US dollars. The available area figures identify eight of the smallest states, not a verified top ten, and the GDP observations come from different years. They therefore support a careful comparison—not a definitive combined ranking.
How to compare country size and economic output
Total area measures physical extent. GDP per capita divides a country’s gross domestic product by its population and indicates average economic output per person. It is not a measure of personal wealth, household income, or what residents can buy. A high figure does not mean that every person receives that amount.
The comparison below uses a secondary total-area compilation and World Bank GDP-per-capita observations. The area list is limited to its first eight entries; the evidence does not establish the final two countries in a consistent smallest-ten list. GDP observations are also from different years, so the figures should not be treated as one synchronized ranking.
Other economic measures answer different questions. GDP per capita adjusted for purchasing power (PPP) accounts for price-level differences; GNI per capita measures income attributed to residents and is not interchangeable with GDP. No uniform PPP or GNI comparison is established here. The World Bank’s “Small states” category is a statistical grouping, not an area ranking or a determination of sovereignty. Its use of “country” may refer to an economy and does not necessarily imply political independence.

The eight smallest states identified in the area compilation
WorldAtlas’s compilation, accessed in 2026, orders these entries by total area. Area figures can differ among sources and definitions. Nauru’s 21 km² figure is independently consistent with the UN Statistics Division’s World Statistics Pocketbook 2024, whose footnote identifies 2022 as the data year.
| Order in compilation | State | Total area |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Vatican City | 0.49 km² (WorldAtlas, accessed 2026) |
| 2 | Monaco | 2 km² (WorldAtlas, accessed 2026) |
| 3 | Nauru | 21 km² (WorldAtlas, accessed 2026; UN Statistics Division reports 21 km² for 2022) |
| 4 | Tuvalu | 26 km² (WorldAtlas, accessed 2026) |
| 5 | San Marino | 61 km² (WorldAtlas, accessed 2026) |
| 6 | Liechtenstein | 160 km² (WorldAtlas, accessed 2026) |
| 7 | Marshall Islands | 181 km² (WorldAtlas, accessed 2026) |
| 8 | Saint Kitts and Nevis | 261 km² (WorldAtlas, accessed 2026) |
These are the compilation’s first eight entries, not a complete top ten. The available figures do not establish which two states complete a ten-country list under the same source and area definition.

GDP per capita figures available for several of these states
The World Bank figures below are GDP per capita in current US dollars. Their observation years differ, and the available data do not cover all ten places in a verified smallest-country set. The table is therefore a collection of comparable indicator observations, not a ranked list of the richest among the ten smallest states.
| State | GDP per capita, current US$ | Observation year |
|---|---|---|
| Monaco | $288,001.57 | 2024 |
| Liechtenstein | $220,167.23 | 2024 |
| San Marino | $59,871.33 | 2023 |
| Malta | $47,906.90 | 2025 |
| Saint Kitts and Nevis | $25,223.03 | 2025 |
| Nauru | $14,639.50 | 2025 |
| Marshall Islands | $8,489.06 | 2025 |
| Tuvalu | $6,041.45 | 2025 |
Malta appears in the economic data but is not among the eight entries shown in the area compilation. Its inclusion illustrates why the set must be defined before making a claim about the richest countries by size: a broad small-economy comparison is not the same as ranking only the smallest sovereign states by area.

What the comparison can—and cannot—tell you
- Smallest by area: The cited compilation identifies the eight states above by total area. Its excerpt does not support naming a complete top ten.
- Highest GDP-per-capita observations among the examples: Monaco and Liechtenstein have the largest figures shown, but their observations are for 2024 while other countries’ figures are from 2023 or 2025.
- Not individual prosperity: GDP per capita is an average-output indicator. It does not show how income or wealth is distributed among residents.
- Not a final richest-among-the-smallest ranking: A complete area-defined set and a consistent economic comparison for every member are not available in these figures.
For an area-based list, use one geographic definition and a clearly specified sovereign-state scope. For an economic ranking, use the same GDP-per-capita series and year across the defined set where possible, and state any gaps. Without those choices, “smallest and richest” blends two distinct superlatives rather than describing one defensible ranking.
