Why “most expensive” is hard to verify
A studio’s reputation, famous clients, or specialist facilities do not establish that it charges more than other studios. A 2017 GRAMMY article summarizing a Billboard list considered factors such as tracking and mixing spaces, equipment, staff, and atmosphere. It was not a survey of booking rates.
None of the reviewed sources publishes comparable current prices for ten studios. A meaningful cost comparison would need a dated quote from each facility and consistent details about the room, booking minimum, included engineer, equipment access, overtime, and whether mixing, mastering, taxes, or lodging cost extra. Without those terms, the figures would not be an apples-to-apples ranking.

Abbey Road Studios — London
Abbey Road operates several recording and mastering rooms. Its official studios page describes its facilities, while its Studio Two page calls the room its “most famous recording space” and says it opened in 1932. Those are the studio’s own descriptions, not an independent global ranking.
Studio One received a six-month refurbishment completed in 2025. The Associated Press reported that preserving the room’s acoustics was a priority and that its reverberation was maintained at 2.3 seconds, the same as in the 1970s (Associated Press, April 3, 2025). In a March 25, 2026 feature, MusicRadar reported additions to the instrument collection including a Teenage Engineering OP-1, Roland Juno-106, and TR-808.

Capitol Studios — Hollywood, Los Angeles
Capitol’s published specifications say Studio A, built in 1956, has more than 1,500 square feet of floor space and can accommodate up to 50 musicians. Adjustable louvered wall panels allow changes to the room’s decay time, and Studios A and B can be combined by removing the wall between them. The facility also describes eight underground echo chambers, each approximately 2,000 cubic feet, with a maximum reverberation period of five seconds (Capitol Studios facility information). These are the studio’s published specifications, not measures of relative quality or price.

Electric Lady Studios — New York City
Electric Lady’s Studio B page lists an SSL 9000J console, Pro Tools HDX, custom Augspurger main monitors, ATC SCM50 ASL monitors, and Yamaha NS-10 monitors. The listed dimensions are 21 by 19 feet for the live room and 27 by 17 feet for the control room. The page associates the room with Patti Smith’s Horses, D’Angelo’s Voodoo, and Frank Ocean’s Blonde (Electric Lady Studios, Studio B). The configuration and album associations do not establish current rates.

Ask every studio for the same information before comparing totals. A low hourly figure can become a more expensive session if it excludes engineering, requires a long minimum, or bills room setup and overtime separately.

Compare the resulting total for the same type and duration of session, not just the headline hourly or daily rate. If a studio will not provide a written quote, its cost cannot be reliably compared with one that does.
What the published figures do—and do not—show
The available numerical details describe different properties: Capitol’s published room area and capacity, its echo chambers’ maximum reverberation period, and the reverberation maintained in Abbey Road Studio One after refurbishment. They are useful for understanding what a room may offer, but they are not cost data or a common score for sound quality.
