In iSeeCars’ historical comparison of 2017-model-year new-car sales with used-car sales in 2020, the INFINITI QX60 had the steepest three-year depreciation among the listed luxury SUVs, at 51.0%. All ten models in the ranking lost 48.0% to 51.0% of their adjusted new price on average. These are historical market averages—not current prices or a prediction of what a particular owner will lose.
The 10 SUVs with the steepest three-year depreciation
iSeeCars compared new 2017-model-year vehicles sold from January through June 2017 with used examples of the same model year sold from January through June 2020. The figures below are from that historical comparison; used prices and savings are averages reported by iSeeCars, not present-day quotes.

iSeeCars’ study reported average three-year depreciation of 39.7% across all SUVs in its table. Each SUV in this top ten exceeded that figure. The QX60 led the luxury-SUV list, while the Volvo XC60 ranked tenth at 48.0%.
How to read these depreciation figures
Depreciation percentage
The percentage represents the average decline from the study’s inflation-adjusted new price to the average used price in the 2020 sales sample. It does not mean every owner of that model lost the same share, or that every three-year-old example would sell for the listed average.

Average used price and savings
The used-price column gives the average price for sampled three-year-old vehicles in 2020. “Savings” is the average difference from the adjusted new price used in the study. It is a historical comparison, not a current deal estimate: mileage, trim, condition, location, incentives, and market conditions can all change a specific vehicle’s value.
What the study measured—and what it did not
iSeeCars said it analyzed more than 5.7 million new cars from model year 2017 sold between January and June 2017, and more than 1.2 million used vehicles of that model year sold between January and June 2020. It adjusted new-car prices to 2020 dollars using U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, then calculated price differences as a percentage of the adjusted new price. The analysis also statistically adjusted for sales volume and new-car pricing.

The sample excluded heavy-duty vehicles, vehicles discontinued before model year 2020, and low-volume vehicles, subject to exceptions for separate sports-car and alternative-fuel analyses. The comparison used sales samples from different periods; it did not follow individual cars or owners from purchase to resale. Nor did it establish a specific cause for each model’s result. iSeeCars discussed market factors such as luxury leasing and the supply of used vehicles, but those explanations do not prove why any one model depreciated at a particular rate.
Is this a current ranking?
No. It is a historical ranking based on 2017 new sales and 2020 used sales. The current iSeeCars luxury-SUV resale-value page reports five-year retention rankings for 2026, a different measure and ownership period. It should not be substituted for an updated three-year depreciation ranking.

What this means if you are shopping used
A steep historical depreciation rate can indicate that a model’s used examples once sold at a substantial discount from new, but a ranking alone cannot tell you whether a particular vehicle is fairly priced or mechanically sound. Compare current listings for the same year, trim, mileage, and condition, then check the individual vehicle carefully.
- Obtain a vehicle-history report; iSeeCars names Carfax and AutoCheck as examples.
- Arrange an independent mechanic’s inspection before buying.
- Evaluate the actual car’s maintenance records, condition, mileage, and price rather than relying on its model’s historical average.
As iSeeCars CEO Phong Ly put it, “Three years is a popular age for used car buyers because the cars have taken a major depreciation hit, but likely have many of the latest modern safety and technology features.” That observation describes a potential value proposition, not a guarantee that every three-year-old luxury SUV is a good purchase.
