There is no verified, definitive all-time ranking of actors’ movie paydays. Public lists combine estimates of guaranteed salary and contingent revenue, and even estimates for one film can conflict. The examples below are best read as reported figures—not audited pay records or a precise ranking.
What counts as a movie payday?
A film’s reported “payday” may mean the actor’s guaranteed fee, or a larger eventual total that includes compensation tied to the film’s performance or later distribution. Those are different measures. Backend participation can be calculated from different revenue bases, and “gross” participation is not the same as a share of profit.

Deal terms are often private, so a reported total may be an estimate rather than a disclosed final accounting. A film’s box-office gross does not, by itself, show how much an actor received. The figures below are nominal dollar estimates; they are not adjusted for inflation.
10 reported high movie paydays
The following examples appear in Celebrity Net Worth’s compilation, with a separate Variety estimate for Top Gun: Maverick. The order is not a reliable all-time ranking: the figures come from different reporting and may describe different kinds of compensation.

Why the numbers are hard to compare
Guaranteed pay is not the same as eventual compensation
An upfront salary is a fixed contracted fee. An actor’s total compensation can be higher if the contract also provides contingent payments. Without the underlying deal terms, a headline total may not make clear what was guaranteed and what depended on performance or later revenue.

Different sources may count different revenue
A reported total can include salary, theatrical participation, or proceeds from home entertainment and streaming. The Top Gun: Maverick figure illustrates the distinction: Variety reported in 2022 that Cruise could earn $100 million or more, but described it as an estimate combining several sources of compensation—not a final public accounting.
Published estimates can disagree
Celebrity Net Worth gives Willis’s The Sixth Sense payday as $120 million in its ranking and $114 million on its separate overview page. The discrepancy is not resolved by the available figures, so neither amount should be presented as settled fact.

Do not confuse a single-film payday with annual earnings
Annual highest-paid-actor lists measure a different thing: earnings across projects and, potentially, other entertainment work. Forbes Australia estimated Dwayne Johnson’s 2024 entertainment earnings at $88 million after representation fees. That is an annual figure, not the payday for one movie role.
Forbes Australia also reported in 2025 that Johnson’s fee-plus-buyout for Red One was estimated at $50 million, which it described as believed to be the largest single-movie fee-plus-buyout total at that time. A fee-plus-buyout is a different compensation measure from an eventual backend payday, so it should not be inserted into a list of total film earnings as though the figures were directly comparable. Forbes Australia’s 2024 actor-earnings estimates also notes that its annual figures are allocated to the year a project was released, even when compensation may have been paid earlier or later.

How to judge a “highest-paid role” claim
- Check what the number measures. Is it an upfront fee, a guaranteed total, or an estimate that includes contingent payments?
- Look for the components. Salary, box-office participation, and later distribution proceeds should not be treated as interchangeable.
- Check the source and date. A reported estimate is not an official accounting, and newer reporting can use a different basis.
- Compare like with like. Do not rank a fee-only number against a projected backend total or an annual earnings figure without explaining the difference.
- Keep the claim narrow. A large reported payday does not prove an actor received a particular share of a film’s gross or profit.
