What the evidence says about these six used German saloons
Inspection and breakdown statistics answer different questions. TÜV results report defects found during periodic inspections in particular vehicle-age cohorts; ADAC breakdown figures describe roadside failures. Neither is a complete measure of long-term reliability or ownership cost, and a model-level pattern cannot tell you whether an individual car is sound.
TÜV Rheinland’s 2026 summary drew on about 9.5 million periodic inspections across 216 models and reported that 21.5% of cars overall failed for significant defects. That is a fleet-wide figure, not a German-saloon rate. The same summary named the Mercedes-Benz C-Class the leading mid-range model among two- and three-year-old cars in that year’s TÜV tests. That result should not be extended to older C-Classes or other generations. TÜV Rheinland’s 2026 report summary
| Model line | What the cited evidence indicates | What to verify on the car |
|---|---|---|
| Mercedes-Benz C-Class | TÜV Rheinland’s 2026 summary names it the leading mid-range model among two- and three-year-old cars. AUTO BILD’s TÜV-based overview reports rising significant-defect rates for the W205 across older age bands. | Confirm generation and age; assess the inspection and repair record rather than assuming the newer-car result applies. |
| BMW 3 Series | A familiar mid-size option. AUTO BILD discusses the F30 (2012–2021), including potential oil leaks and recall subjects, and publishes age-band defect rates. | Check engine, build date, emissions class, service records and whether applicable recalls were completed. |
| Audi A4 | A common mid-size option. AUTO BILD’s TÜV-based overview reports comparatively low B9 defect rates in some older age bands. | Identify the exact model year and variant; a cohort result does not guarantee the condition of a specific example. |
| Audi A6 | An upper-mid-size peer to the 5 Series and E-Class. ADAC describes front-wheel drive as standard, with quattro available on some stronger engines. A 2025 comparison found strong early TÜV results for the C8. | The C8 had limited TÜV-age data in that comparison; inspect the individual car, including its suspension. |
| Mercedes-Benz E-Class | An A6 and 5 Series peer. In AUTO BILD’s 2025 comparison of W213, G30 and C8 models, the E-Class held up relatively consistently into the later cohort. | Check generation, mileage, axle suspension and steering, which the comparison identifies as potential problem areas. |
| BMW 5 Series | An upper-mid-size option. AUTO BILD’s 2025 comparison found a weaker significant-defect pattern for the G30 than for the E-Class and A6; its 2026 used-car check lists potential faults and recall subjects. | Match potential issues to the exact engine and production date; review repair history and recall completion. |

Mid-size choices: C-Class, 3 Series or A4?
These three are familiar mid-size alternatives, but the available figures do not establish a universal winner across generations, purchase prices or running costs. The cohort figures below are significant-defect rates reported in AUTO BILD’s TÜV-based model overview. They are not the probability that a particular car will fail, nor a measure of breakdowns or repair bills.
| Model and generation | 2–3 years | 4–5 years | 6–7 years | 8–9 years | 10–11 years |

Source for every rate: AUTO BILD’s TÜV-based mid-size model overview. Read across the age bands, not just the youngest cohort: cars of the same model line can show different inspection patterns as they age.
Mercedes-Benz C-Class
The 2026 TÜV summary is encouraging for recent C-Classes specifically: it names the model as the leading mid-range car among two- and three-year-olds in that year’s tests. For a W205, the overview’s reported defect rate rises from 3.2% at 2–3 years to 18.5% at 8–9 years. Check the car’s own inspection reports and maintenance history; the recent-car class result says nothing conclusive about an older example.

BMW 3 Series
The F30 ran from 2012 to 2021, according to AUTO BILD’s used-car overview. Its cited defect rate ranges from 6.1% in the 2–3-year cohort to 23.3% in the 10–11-year cohort. AUTO BILD also flags possible oil leaks and recall subjects. Have the specific engine and build date checked, look for evidence of leaks, and verify recall completion by VIN rather than assuming every F30 shares the same risks.
Audi A4
For the B9, AUTO BILD reports 14.4% significant defects in the 8–9-year cohort, compared with 11.1% at 6–7 years. Those figures are useful context for a generation, not a substitute for checking the exact model year, variant, mileage and inspection record.
Upper-mid-size choices: A6, E-Class or 5 Series?
The A6, E-Class and 5 Series compete in the upper-mid-size class. The available sources offer differing types of evidence—a generation overview, early TÜV findings and a comparison across selected age cohorts—rather than a like-for-like ownership-cost ranking.

Audi A6
ADAC describes front-wheel drive as the A6’s standard configuration, with quattro available on some stronger engines. The 2025 TÜV comparison found strong early inspection results for the C8, but noted that age-band data for that generation were limited at the time. Treat that as an early indication, not a settled record for older C8s, and include suspension condition in an inspection.
Mercedes-Benz E-Class
In AUTO BILD’s 2025 comparison of the W213 E-Class, BMW G30 5 Series and Audi C8 A6, the E-Class held up relatively consistently into the later cohort. The comparison flags axle suspension and steering as potential problem areas. Ask for inspection documentation and repair invoices that cover those components, especially on a higher-mileage car.

BMW 5 Series
AUTO BILD’s comparison found a weaker significant-defect pattern for the G30 than for the E-Class and A6, while its 2026 used-car check lists issues to investigate on particular cars. These include pre-facelift timing-chain damage, electric water-pump problems, xDrive drivetrain issues, electronic parking-brake control-unit problems and high oil consumption. It also identifies recall subjects involving EGR-cooler fire risk, fuel-filter overheating, VANOS fasteners and brake-servo failure. These are prompts to check a car’s specific engine, production date, repair history and VIN—not evidence that every 5 Series has any of them. AUTO BILD’s BMW 5 Series used-car check

How to compare candidates for your budget and use
There is no comparable evidence here for total ownership cost, fuel use, insurance or depreciation across all six lines, so those costs should not be inferred from inspection statistics. Build your shortlist around the car’s actual age, condition and suitability, then compare like with like.
- Set your budget against age and condition. Compare vehicles of similar age and mileage; do not let a newer badge or trim level distract from a thin service record or deferred repairs.
- Choose the space class you need. Decide whether a mid-size C-Class, 3 Series or A4 meets your needs, or whether an upper-mid-size A6, E-Class or 5 Series is more appropriate.
- Pin down the exact version. Record generation, model year, engine, drivetrain and production date. These details determine which inspection patterns and potential faults are relevant.
- Compare documentation, not just claims. Ask for complete vehicle records, inspection reports and repair invoices. A seller’s description or a model’s reputation is not evidence of the condition of that individual car.
- Check recall completion by VIN. Ask for documentation showing applicable work was completed, especially where a model-specific source identifies recall subjects.
- Inspect and drive the actual car. Review its condition in person and test-drive it before signing; arrange an independent inspection if you cannot assess it confidently yourself.
What to check before signing
ADAC’s buyer guide, dated 25 March 2026, advises inspecting and test-driving the car before signing, asking about accident damage, and reviewing complete vehicle documentation, inspection records and repair invoices. Use a repeatable checklist:
- Ask about accident damage. Request a clear account of past repairs and supporting documents.
- Review the paperwork. Match the vehicle details to its records, and look for gaps in service, inspection and repair history.
- Check the car’s inspection history. Read the actual reports for recurring defects and completed repairs rather than relying on a model-level percentage.
- Verify recalls by VIN. Confirm whether applicable campaigns are complete; do not assume a recall has been handled because the car is otherwise well maintained.
- Inspect and test-drive. Assess the individual vehicle and its systems. An OBD-II reader can optionally reveal stored fault codes, but it cannot establish that the car is mechanically sound or replace an independent inspection.
- Consider the battery’s condition. ADAC attributed 45.4% of breakdowns in evaluated year 2025 to the 12-volt starter battery across its breakdown statistics. This is an overall cause share, not a prediction for any one model; check the battery’s age and condition as part of the normal inspection.

The available comparable evidence supports these six model lines, but does not establish four more candidates or a defensible ranking of ten. Adding models without generation-specific inspection or reliability evidence would make the list longer, not more useful. Use this shortlist to identify cars for closer comparison, then let the exact example’s history and inspection determine whether it merits a purchase.
