For U.S. shoppers, the models below are a starting shortlist drawn from recent Kelley Blue Book roundups—not a claim that each is the roomiest or cheapest to run. Compare the exact model year and trim, then estimate electricity costs using your own mileage and utility rate.
Which roomy EVs belong on a 2026 U.S. shortlist?
Kelley Blue Book’s 2026 EV roundup and its affordable-EV lists identify these candidates. The available listings do not provide a consistent set of cabin measurements and operating-cost figures for all ten, so this is an unranked shortlist rather than a proven top ten.
| EV candidate | Model year indicated by the available listing | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Hyundai IONIQ 9 | 2026 | KBB describes it as a three-row midsize SUV and reports more than 300 miles of range in each configuration. |
| Hyundai IONIQ 5 | 2026 | Included in KBB’s 2026 EV roundup; comparable passenger and cargo measurements and current running costs are not stated in that roundup. |
| Nissan LEAF | 2026 | KBB listing reports 92.4 cubic feet of passenger volume, 35.9 cubic feet of cargo capacity, 121 combined MPGe, and an estimated 303-mile range. Confirm exact EPA label values by trim. |
| Hyundai IONIQ 6 | 2025 | Included in KBB’s affordable-EV list; comparable cabin measurements and current running costs are not stated there. |
| Tesla Model 3 | 2026 | Included in KBB’s 2026 EV roundup; comparable cabin measurements and current running costs are not stated there. |
| Kia Niro EV | 2026 | Included in KBB’s affordable-EV list; comparable current model-year cabin and cost figures are not stated there. |
| Chevrolet Bolt | 2027 | Included in KBB’s affordable-EV list; comparable cabin measurements and current running costs are not stated there. |
| Other KBB 2026 EV roundup candidates | 2026 | KBB’s roundup includes additional EVs, but the available evidence does not establish a ten-model list with consistent interior-space and cost figures. Verify each further candidate’s exact model year and specifications before treating it as a recommendation. |
The last row is intentionally not a specific vehicle: the available source details name only the five candidates above from the 2026 roundup and affordable-EV list. Filling out the ten with unverified models would make the comparison look more complete than the evidence allows. Check KBB’s Best Electric Vehicles of 2026 and Cheapest Electric Cars of 2025, 2026 and 2027 for the current candidate lists, then confirm specifications with the manufacturer and EPA before purchase.
How can you tell whether an EV is roomy enough?
Vehicle class is only a first clue. A three-row SUV may suit a family that needs extra seats, while a hatchback or sedan may use its footprint efficiently but not fit the same passengers or bulky gear. Compare passenger volume, cargo volume, seating layout, and access to the rear seats for the exact configuration.

- Passenger volume: A useful cabin-space measure, but it does not tell you how comfortable a particular adult will find a seat.
- Cargo volume: Check how the figure is measured and whether it refers to seats-up or seats-folded space. These are different use cases and should not be compared as if they were interchangeable.
- Seating and access: If you regularly carry children, test car-seat installation, rear-door access, and the space needed to buckle passengers in.
- Your actual cargo: Bring a stroller, mobility aid, luggage, or other bulky item to a test drive. The fit matters more than a class label.
KBB’s 2026 LEAF listing is one concrete example of the figures to check: 92.4 cubic feet of passenger volume and 35.9 cubic feet of cargo capacity. Those numbers are not a ranking against other vehicles, and trim-specific or measurement differences can affect comparisons. The listing is at KBB’s 2026 Nissan LEAF page.
How do you estimate what an EV will cost to charge?
MPGe helps compare energy efficiency with gasoline vehicles, but it is not a household electricity bill. EPA labels also show kilowatt-hours per 100 miles (kWh/100 mi), which is more directly useful for estimating electricity consumption. Use the value for the exact vehicle and trim, then multiply it by your electricity price and expected driving.

Estimated annual charging cost = kWh/100 miles × annual miles ÷ 100 × electricity price per kWh.
For example, enter your own annual mileage and the per-kWh rate on your bill. EPA’s illustrative label example uses 15,000 miles per year and $0.12 per kWh; those are assumptions, not a prediction for every driver. The agency notes that actual mileage and costs vary. See the EPA’s interactive electric-vehicle label guide for the relationship between MPGe, kWh/100 miles, range, and estimated fuel cost.

Are EVs cheaper to run than gasoline vehicles?
They can be, but savings depend on electricity and gasoline prices, driving, and the vehicle. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center says EV fuel and maintenance costs are generally lower; that broad guidance does not guarantee a particular owner’s savings.

AFDC’s comparison figures are historical 2023 examples, not current quotes for 2026 models:
| 2023 EV example | Combined efficiency | Estimated range | Annual fuel cost shown by AFDC |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kia Niro Electric | 113 MPGe | 253 miles | $650 |
| Chevrolet Bolt | 120 MPGe | 259 miles | $650 |
| Ford Mustang Mach-E RWD | 103 MPGe | 247 miles | $750 |
These figures should not be carried forward as current costs: the model year and underlying assumptions matter. AFDC’s consumer guidance is available at Electric Vehicles for Consumers. For your decision, use the current EPA label and your own electricity rate rather than relying on a general annual-cost figure.

Will the EV’s range and charging setup work for your household?
EPA range is an estimate, not a promise of the distance you will cover on every trip. Weather, hills, speed, heating or air conditioning, and a heavy load can change real-world range. AFDC recommends checking charger compatibility along planned routes and leaving a range buffer for demanding conditions.
Home charging can make routine use more convenient, but the right setup depends on the home and vehicle. AFDC says Level 2 charging can generally recharge a fully depleted EV overnight. It requires 240-volt service or sufficient electrical capacity; confirm what your home can support and installation requirements with a qualified provider or the manufacturer. Check the vehicle’s connector and charging-network compatibility before relying on a public route or home unit.
Quick Recap
What should you verify before choosing from this shortlist?
- Pick the exact model year and trim. Range, efficiency, seating, and equipment can differ across versions; match specifications to the vehicle you would actually buy.
- Check cabin fit in person. Try the seats and cargo area with the people, child seats, and gear you expect to carry.
- Read the EPA label. Compare combined MPGe, kWh/100 miles, and range for the specific trim rather than using a model name alone.
- Calculate your charging cost. Apply your annual miles and electricity rate to the vehicle’s kWh/100-mile figure, then adjust for public charging and rate plans.
- Check route and home charging. Confirm compatible chargers on regular routes and whether your electrical service can support the charging speed you want.
- Compare the full purchase decision separately. Check current price, incentives, warranty, and maintenance information for the exact vehicle. A lower estimated energy cost does not automatically make a higher purchase price the better financial choice.
