These 10 U.S. market candidates span budget-friendly hatchbacks, sedans and crossovers. Treat the prices and depreciation figures below as dated evidence, then judge each individual car by its asking price, battery condition, warranty and fit for your driving.
What “bottomed out” means for a used EV
Depreciation can create a buying opportunity, but a historical loss in value does not establish that prices have stopped falling. iSeeCars’ 2026 analysis found that electric vehicles depreciated by an average of 57.2% over five years in its study, compared with 35.4% for hybrids. The study said EV depreciation remained more than 15 percentage points above the industry average. Those are findings from iSeeCars’ dataset and methodology, not a forecast for a particular car or a guarantee about its future resale value.
There are signs of used-EV market activity, but they do not settle the price-floor question. Kelley Blue Book, citing Cox Automotive, reported that U.S. used-EV sales rose 14.7% year over year in August 2026; the average new-EV transaction price that month was $54,754. Sales growth and new-car prices do not show that used-EV asking prices have bottomed.
The models below are a shortlist to compare, not a ranking of the cars most likely to hold their value. iSeeCars’ depreciation percentages are historical five-year estimates; they should not be converted into current asking prices.

10 used EVs to compare
| Model | Why consider it | Evidence and shopping focus |
|---|---|---|
| Chevrolet Bolt EV | A budget-oriented hatchback to investigate first if purchase price matters most. | Edmunds’ guide, republished by the Associated Press on April 1, 2026, gave about $18,000 as the average price for 2021–2023 Bolt EV/EUV examples. Edmunds described the Bolt EV as having up to 259 miles of original EPA-estimated range. That is a new-vehicle estimate, not a promise of present-day range or an offer for a particular listing. |
| Chevrolet Bolt EUV | A more crossover-like alternative to the Bolt EV for shoppers who prefer its body style. | The same Edmunds guide gave up to 247 miles of original EPA-estimated range. Its approximate $18,000 average applied to 2021–2023 Bolt EV/EUV examples together, not to every EUV trim or listing. |
| Hyundai Kona Electric | A compact option to consider when you want a smaller EV and can find one that fits your local charging and range needs. | iSeeCars estimated 56.5% five-year depreciation in its 2026 analysis, below its 57.2% average for EVs. The study does not establish the current price or condition of any Kona Electric listing. |
| Kia Niro EV | Another compact EV to compare with the Kona Electric and other cars that suit your daily routes. | iSeeCars estimated 57.3% five-year depreciation in 2026, close to its 57.2% EV average. That comparison is historical, not a current valuation. |
| Tesla Model 3 | A sedan candidate if its price, condition and charging arrangements work for your routine. | Its 54.6% five-year depreciation was the lowest among the models in iSeeCars’ cited 2026 figures, but still represents a loss of more than half its value in that analysis. |
| Tesla Model Y | A crossover candidate to compare against similarly priced EVs that meet your space and driving needs. | iSeeCars estimated 57.8% five-year depreciation in 2026. Compare actual listings by model year, trim, mileage, condition and charging suitability rather than assuming the figure identifies a bargain. |
| Ford Mustang Mach-E | A crossover to investigate if its available configuration and usable range fit your needs. | iSeeCars estimated 60.8% five-year depreciation in 2026. Check the specific trim, equipment, battery evidence and price against comparable listings. |
| Volkswagen ID.4 | A crossover candidate for shoppers weighing cabin and cargo needs against the condition and price of available cars. | iSeeCars estimated 62.1% five-year depreciation in 2026. Inspect the individual vehicle and its equipment; the percentage does not establish what a particular ID.4 should cost. |
| Hyundai Ioniq 5 | A current used-EV candidate to compare with other crossovers based on charging needs, budget and local availability. | iSeeCars named it in its 2026 used-EV shopping coverage, but the cited material does not provide a comparable model-specific depreciation percentage or current asking price. |
| Kia EV6 | A current used-EV candidate to compare directly with the Ioniq 5 and other cars that meet your priorities. | iSeeCars named it in its 2026 used-EV shopping coverage, but the cited material does not provide a comparable model-specific depreciation percentage or current asking price. |
How to decide whether a specific listing is a good buy
A model’s depreciation history can help you build a shortlist; the listing’s condition and price determine whether the car deserves a closer look. Compare vehicles with similar model years, trims, mileage and condition. A cheap asking price alone does not tell you whether the battery, warranty or equipment makes the car a sensible purchase.
Check battery condition and usable range
- Ask for available battery-condition evidence and service documentation. Do not treat the original EPA range as the car’s current range: age, condition, driving and other circumstances affect what a used vehicle can deliver.
- Consider your daily distance, climate and access to charging. A car’s suitability depends on your routine, not just a published range estimate.
- Verify that the car can use the charging equipment and network available to you. If you plan to install a Level 2 home charger, confirm compatibility and installation requirements before buying equipment.
Verify warranty coverage for the VIN
Do not assume a general battery-warranty description applies to a particular used car. Check the warranty start date, mileage limit, remaining coverage and transfer terms for the specific VIN with the manufacturer or an authorized source. A warranty’s existence does not establish that a particular battery concern is covered.

Check the vehicle’s history and condition
- Review service records and confirm whether relevant recalls have been completed for the specific vehicle.
- Inspect the car and its equipment, or arrange an independent inspection appropriate for an EV. The history of one listing cannot be inferred from a model’s reputation or depreciation figure.
- Compare multiple listings using purchase price, model year, mileage, usable range, battery and warranty evidence, charging access, safety and condition.
Why the depreciation figures are not a price forecast
iSeeCars’ 2026 estimates are based on five-year vehicle depreciation in its dataset, with inflation adjustment using U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Its results depend on its data and method; they describe past value changes rather than the future price of a specific car. In the cited model figures, the Porsche Taycan also appeared, but it is not included in this budget- and everyday-use-oriented shortlist.
Used-EV value retention can also differ across regions. The International Energy Agency published a 2021–2025 chart comparing electric-car value retention with the overall car market across major regions, drawing on sources including Autovista, Black Book, Cox Automotive, iSeeCars’ 2025 estimate and CADA. The available chart text does not provide the plotted regional percentages, so no regional figure is stated here.
