Re:

Which Electric Cars Offer the Most Horsepower per Dollar? A U.S. Shortlist

A few current U.S. electric-car examples can be compared by horsepower per $1,000, but inconsistent fees and missing trim data make a trustworthy top 10 impossible to establish.

There is not enough comparable, current manufacturer data to name a defensible top 10 electric cars by horsepower per dollar. The available U.S. figures do support a useful shortlist: among the examples with a trim-specific price and power figure, the 2026 Dodge Charger Daytona Scat Pack has the highest raw ratio—but its quoted price excludes destination, so the comparison is not fully normalized.

How to compare horsepower per dollar

Use a specific model year and trim, then divide the manufacturer-stated horsepower by that trim’s starting U.S. MSRP. For a compact figure, express the result as horsepower per $1,000:

Horsepower per $1,000 = stated horsepower ÷ (starting MSRP ÷ 1,000)

This is a calculated value, not an official manufacturer rating. The price basis matters: destination and order fees are included in some figures and excluded from others. The examples below therefore show the published inputs and their price conventions rather than pretending they form a perfectly normalized ranking.

What the available U.S. figures show

Model and trim Model year Stated output used Published starting price Approx. hp per $1,000 Price basis
Hyundai IONIQ 5 N 2026 601 hp standard $59,900 10.0 Excludes freight, taxes, title and license
Dodge Charger Daytona Scat Pack, two-door 2026 670 hp $59,995 11.2 Excludes taxes, title and $1,995 destination charge
BMW i4 M60 Gran Coupe 2026 593 hp in Sport mode $70,700 8.4 BMW starting MSRP
Tesla Model 3 Performance Current U.S. product page 528 hp $56,630 9.3 Includes destination and order fees; excludes taxes and other fees

Ratios are rounded to one decimal place and calculated from the listed manufacturer figures. Because the published prices do not use a common fee convention, treat them as directional, not as a final, apples-to-apples league table. On the figures shown, the Dodge has the highest ratio; adding its stated destination charge lowers its ratio to about 10.8 hp per $1,000.

What each candidate tells you

2026 Dodge Charger Daytona Scat Pack: highest listed ratio, before destination

Dodge lists 670 hp and a $59,995 starting U.S. MSRP for the two-door Scat Pack. Its announcement says the price excludes a $1,995 destination charge, along with taxes and title. The ratio is about 11.2 hp per $1,000 at the listed MSRP, or about 10.8 when the destination charge is added. This is a battery-electric Charger Daytona figure; it should not be confused with gasoline Charger trims. Dodge’s 2026 Charger Daytona announcement.

2026 Hyundai IONIQ 5 N: distinguish standard power from boost

Hyundai lists 601 hp as standard output and up to 641 hp for 10 seconds with N Grin Boost. The $59,900 starting MSRP excludes freight, taxes, title and license. Using standard output gives about 10.0 hp per $1,000; using the temporary boosted figure would produce about 10.7, but that is not sustained output. For a consistent comparison, use the standard figure unless every vehicle’s figure is defined on the same basis. Hyundai’s 2026 IONIQ 5 N specifications and pricing.

2026 BMW i4 M60 Gran Coupe: strong output, lower ratio at its starting price

BMW’s U.S. product information gives the i4 M60 593 hp in Sport mode and a $70,700 starting MSRP, or about 8.4 hp per $1,000. BMW’s page also contains a conflicting 591-hp figure in its FAQ; the table and performance section state 593 hp. That internal discrepancy should be resolved with BMW before treating the result as definitive. BMW’s 2026 i4 information.

Why two apparent contenders cannot be ranked yet

Kia EV6: the listed price is for a different, lower-output configuration

Kia lists 320 hp for the 2026 EV6 Light Long Range, Wind and GT-Line AWD trims. The reviewed overview’s $37,900 price is for the Light SR RWD, not one of those 320-hp AWD trims, and it excludes a $1,545 destination charge. Pairing that price with the AWD horsepower would create a misleading ratio. The exact starting price for a matching 320-hp trim is needed before calculating it. Kia’s 2026 EV6 specifications.

Nissan LEAF S+: price available, matching horsepower figure not established

Nissan lists a $29,990 starting price for the 2026 LEAF S+, before destination and handling, but the reviewed price announcement does not establish its horsepower. Without a matching output specification, it cannot be included in a horsepower-per-dollar calculation. Nissan’s 2026 LEAF pricing announcement.

Why this is not a verified top 10

The available figures cover only a few examples, not a complete set of current U.S. electric vehicles with trim-specific MSRP, consistent fee treatment and comparable output figures. Listing ten cars as market leaders would imply a broad ranking the evidence does not establish. A genuine top-ten comparison needs those inputs for every candidate, using the same model year and a clearly defined price basis.

Horsepower itself also deserves a qualification. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s February 2026 2025 Automotive Trends Report says determining overall horsepower for multi-motor battery-electric vehicles can be complicated by how their motors are integrated, and that BEV and plug-in hybrid horsepower values may have higher uncertainty. The report gives average new-vehicle output as 258 hp for model year 2024 and a preliminary 264 hp for model year 2025; those fleet averages provide context, not an EV ranking.

How to use the numbers when shopping

  • Compare the exact trim you would buy, not a nameplate’s base price against another trim’s maximum output.
  • Use standard output for the main calculation; show temporary boost separately and label its duration.
  • Check whether destination, order fees and other charges are included, and recalculate on a consistent basis where possible.
  • Use horsepower per dollar as one value measure, not a substitute for comparing range, charging, vehicle type or the actual price offered to you.
