Those credentials and claims are not interchangeable, and none proves that every itinerary has the same impact. Use the list as a starting point, then check the details of the trip you plan to book.
What “eco-friendly” means for a tour company
“Eco-friendly” is a broad label, not a uniform certification. A useful benchmark is the GSTC Tour Operator Standard, which addresses sustainability planning, local social and economic benefits, cultural heritage, and environmental impacts. GSTC establishes standards and accredits certification bodies; those bodies assess and certify operators. GSTC does not directly certify companies. GSTC’s Tour Operator Standard and certification overview explain the distinction.
B Corp certification is a separate business credential, not GSTC tour-operator certification. A company-wide credential or policy can offer useful context, but it does not establish the footprint or community impact of every departure. The examples below therefore identify the type of evidence available rather than ranking companies as “greenest.”
Tour companies with certification or published responsibility claims
1. EXO Travel
GSTC says EXO Travel achieved certification across destinations in Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa. The assessment was conducted by Control Union, a GSTC-accredited certification body. This is the clearest independently verified operator example in the available company-specific material. GSTC’s announcement about EXO Travel describes the certification.

How to compare the actual tours before booking
Company-level standards are a starting point. A trip’s transport, local arrangements, group size, and activities determine what a traveler actually participates in. Ask the operator for concrete answers to these questions, preferably for the exact itinerary and departure date:
- Certification: Which organization certified the company, what standard was used, which business operations or destinations are in scope, and when was the certification last valid? Distinguish GSTC-recognized tour-operator certification from B Corp certification.
- Local economic benefits: Who operates the ground services, guides the group, and supplies meals and accommodation? Can the company explain how it selects and pays local partners?
- Transport and emissions: What transport is included, and are lower-emission alternatives available? If the operator reports emissions or reduction targets, ask what is counted and whether the figure is measured, independently verified, or a future goal.
- Group size: What is the maximum group size for this departure? A company-wide average, such as the figure in Explore’s B Lab profile, may differ from the itinerary you are considering.
- Wildlife: Does the trip involve close contact, feeding, riding, or performances? Ask what standards govern animal interactions and whether observation can happen without disturbing wildlife.
- Culture and community: Are visits arranged with local consent and guidance? Ask how the tour handles photography, sacred or sensitive sites, and respectful conduct.
Specific answers are more useful than a broad “responsible” label. If an operator cannot explain who provides services, how activities are managed, or what its environmental figures cover, treat the claim as unverified for that trip rather than assuming the company-wide credential answers those questions.
