No reliable, current model-by-model data establishes which 10 electric vehicles have the lowest long-term maintenance costs. The evidence does support a narrower conclusion: battery-electric vehicles generally have lower scheduled maintenance costs than gasoline vehicles, but a low-cost shortlist should not be mistaken for a measured ranking. Below are 10 EVs to compare—not a claim that these models are the cheapest to maintain.
What the available evidence says about EV maintenance costs
The U.S. Department of Energy estimated scheduled maintenance at 6.1 cents per mile for a light-duty battery-electric vehicle, compared with 10.1 cents per mile for a conventional internal-combustion vehicle. These are historical, powertrain-level estimates from a 2021 source, not current lifetime-cost estimates for individual models. DOE’s scheduled-maintenance comparison.
Consumer Reports reported that EV and plug-in hybrid owners paid about half as much as gasoline-car owners for repair and maintenance, and estimated $4,600 in lifetime savings versus gasoline vehicles. That is a study estimate, not a guaranteed saving for a particular buyer, car, or ownership period. The report was published in 2020, with its study description surfaced in a 2023 report. Consumer Reports’ comparison.
10 EVs to compare—not a verified cost ranking
The available evidence does not support ranking these or any other 10 individual EVs by long-term maintenance cost. Consumer Reports’ cited comparison is at the brand level; Tesla was reported as the lowest-cost brand in that comparison, not as proof that any specific Tesla model is the cheapest EV to maintain. Its separate model-level long-run analysis required 10 years of data for a model, which excludes newer EVs. Consumer Reports’ long-run model-cost methodology.

Use the following as a starting shortlist of EVs to investigate for your needs, not as a cost-ordered list. Compare each car’s service schedule and warranty for the exact model year and market; the evidence cited here does not establish a comparable maintenance-cost figure for any of these models.
- Tesla Model 3
- Tesla Model Y
- Chevrolet Bolt EV
- Chevrolet Bolt EUV
- Nissan Leaf
- Hyundai Kona Electric
- Kia Niro EV
- Ford Mustang Mach-E
- Volkswagen ID.4
- Hyundai Ioniq 5
How to compare the real cost of maintaining an EV
A fair comparison needs matching model years, mileage, market, time horizon, and rules about what counts as maintenance versus repairs. Before choosing, check these factors for the specific cars you are considering:

- PRODUCT PERFORMANCE: Our electric car jack is hydraulic driven. After being plugged in, it can lift vehicles within 5 Tons in less than 2 mins to its Max (lifting height range 6-17.7 inches). The powerful hydraulic jack nearly matches all the autos, sedan, SUV, MPV, pickup and truck, more competitive than other car jacks.
- PRODUCT PACKAGE INCLUDES: electric car jack; electric impact wrench; plastic case; 3.5m power cable; Battery Clamp with Wire; Pair of Gloves; User Manual, etc. This kit includes everything you need for road emergencies and proves to be very convenient for home purposes as well.
- MULTI-FUNCTIONAL: This electric car jack is equipped with an automatic air pump and a built-in bright LED light. So it can meet multiple environment needs.Even beginners can easily pick it up.
- SAFETY: To ensure maximum safety, the electric car jack will automatically stop working when reaches its height limit. This electric car jack set can meet various demands making it an essential outdoor tool in case of an emergency.
- NOTES: Start car engine before operation. NEVER USE THE JACK ON SLOP GROUND OR OVER 5 TONS VEHICLES.NEVER USE THE JACK ON SLOP GROUND OR OVER 5 TONS VEHICLES.
- Scheduled service: Review the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule and what it includes. Do not assume that every EV has the same service requirements.
- Warranty coverage: Check vehicle and traction-battery coverage, exclusions, and terms for your location and model year. Warranty coverage may limit some out-of-pocket repair costs, but it is not itself a measure of maintenance spending.
- Comparable ownership data: Look for costs measured over similar years and mileage. A new model with little long-term data cannot be fairly compared with a car that has a decade of owner history.
- Wear items: Tires, brake pads, suspension parts, cabin filters, and occasional cooling-system service can still add costs. Regenerative braking can reduce brake-pad use, but it does not remove tire or suspension wear. DOE’s EV maintenance overview.
- Use and location: Driving patterns, road conditions, local labor rates, climate, and charging arrangements affect ownership costs. A vehicle that suits your routes and charging access may be a better financial fit than one with a nominally attractive maintenance profile.
- Reliability, separately: Routine maintenance spending is not the same as reliability or collision-repair expense. Consumer Reports’ 2024 survey found EV reliability was improving but still worse on average than gasoline vehicles. Associated Press reporting on the survey.
Are electric cars cheaper to maintain over the long term?
On average, the cited DOE estimate and Consumer Reports owner data point to lower scheduled maintenance and repair-and-maintenance spending for EVs than for gasoline vehicles. That does not establish that every EV costs less to maintain than every gasoline car, or that a particular model will be inexpensive over its full life. Long-term model-level comparisons require comparable data for each model and enough years of ownership.

In 2024, the Department of Energy summarized Recurrent’s study of about 15,000 plug-in vehicles from model years 2011–2023. It found that 1.5% had battery replacements due to failure outside recalls; among model years 2016–2023, the rate was well under 1%. Most replacements were under warranty. DOE also noted that more vehicles and years of data are needed. These findings describe the studied fleet; they do not predict the battery risk or out-of-pocket cost for an individual EV.
