The ten ideas below show how an ecommerce or retail business could structure a seasonal campaign, protect its margins, and make buying easier. For a future season, verify dates, platform features, and current shopper research before scheduling campaigns. No tactic guarantees a sales increase; measure results against your own baseline.
1. Plan a campaign with lead-up, peak, and lead-out phases
Instead of concentrating every message on Black Friday, give shoppers several chances to discover and act on the offer. A practical calendar can include an early awareness period, the main Thanksgiving-to-Cyber Monday window, and follow-up promotions through the rest of the holiday season.
Amazon Ads, citing Mintel Reports’ 2025 U.S. holiday shopping intentions, reported that 42% expected to shop before Thanksgiving, 27% from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday, and 31% from Cyber Monday through New Year’s. These were intentions for the 2025 U.S. season, not measurements of current shopping behavior. Use them as a reason to consider a longer campaign, not as a forecast for your store. Amazon Ads’ 2025 holiday shopping trends
Put a distinct job in each phase
- Lead-up: build awareness, collect sign-ups, and explain what will be on offer.
- Peak: make the promotion, stock status, and purchase path easy to understand.
- Lead-out: communicate remaining availability or relevant follow-up offers without implying false scarcity.
Before reusing a calendar, check the dates for the season you are planning and make sure the team can support the full schedule.

2. Build anticipation on social channels
Use social posts to preview products, demonstrate how they are used, answer common questions, and direct interested shoppers to a sign-up or reminder page. Coordinating these posts with email and site content can help shoppers recognize the offer when it launches.
Customer reviews can be useful proof when they are genuine and relevant. DHL’s 2025 release summarized research reporting that 64% of surveyed Black Friday shoppers were influenced by customer reviews on social media. That finding supports making credible customer voices visible; it does not establish that a particular post or review campaign will produce a sales lift. DHL Group’s 2025 Black Friday trends release
3. Give loyal customers useful early access
Offer repeat customers or VIP subscribers a defined head start, a practical bundle, or another perk that the business can afford to sustain. Early access can make a loyalty program feel useful while spreading demand beyond the busiest hours.
Set the limits before announcing it
- Specify who qualifies and when the access window opens and closes.
- Check whether inventory can support the early offer as well as the public sale.
- Choose a benefit that fits the margin rather than assuming an extra discount is necessary.
Treat the campaign as a retention experiment: compare participation and repeat purchasing with a suitable prior period or customer group, and account for differences in the offer and season.

4. Segment email and SMS messages
Where consent and customer data allow, separate prospects, recent purchasers, loyal customers, and inactive customers instead of sending everyone the same message. The offer and timing can reflect what each group is likely to need: product discovery for prospects, complementary items for recent buyers, or early access for loyal customers. Keep SMS within the permissions and preferences customers have given.
Shopify recommends email segmentation around Black Friday. WooCommerce’s 2025 holiday survey found that respondents most often identified email marketing (23%) and organic social (21.1%) as effective channels. The survey received 249 responses through email outreach in July 2025, so its results describe those respondents rather than a representative census of merchants. WooCommerce’s 2025 survey results
5. Choose a promotion that protects margin
A broad discount is only one option. Depending on the products and inventory, consider a category-specific sale, a bundle, a buy-more-save-more tier, or a gift with purchase. Compare the customer-perceived value with the expected margin, order value, stock requirements, and how clearly the terms can be explained.
In WooCommerce’s July 2025 survey, bundles or buy-more-save-more offers were the most common primary promotion among respondents, at 27.4%. That is a respondent share, not evidence that the offer type caused higher sales or will suit every store. Shopify’s guide also discusses category-specific sales and bundles. Check the economics before publishing
- Estimate gross margin after the discount and any added fulfillment cost.
- Check whether the offer moves inventory you can replenish or products already in short supply.
- Make eligibility, exclusions, and expiration clear on the landing page and at checkout.
6. Make gift shopping easier
Curate gift guides or bundles by recipient, use case, and price point so shoppers can narrow choices quickly. Pair recommendations with accurate stock information and delivery cutoffs; a gift idea is less useful if the item cannot arrive in time.
Amazon Ads’ 2025 guide discusses gift consideration across categories including beauty, food and beverages, and health and wellness. It presents U.S. 2024 purchase-category figures in a 2025 planning guide, not a current or global ranking. Use the category examples to consider whether your own products fit gift-oriented merchandising, then rely on your store’s customer and sales data when choosing what to feature. 7. Test the mobile shopping journey
Check the entire purchase path on a phone, not just the homepage. Shopify recommends mobile optimization, simpler navigation, and a checkout with less friction. A quick test should cover:
- Finding the campaign offer from the homepage or a social link.
- Reading product details, availability, and delivery information.
- Applying the discount and seeing the correct total.
- Completing payment and receiving a clear confirmation.
Fix broken links, hard-to-tap controls, confusing terms, and unexpected steps before the campaign begins. Estimate any conversion effect from your own analytics rather than assuming a standard uplift.

A timely reminder can bring a shopper back to the cart they left behind. Link directly to the cart when possible, identify the relevant item, and make the next step clear. Shopify recommends cart-recovery messaging and automation; its guide is a starting point for implementing the flow. Shopify’s Black Friday ecommerce guide
Do not automatically add a discount to every reminder. If an incentive is appropriate, check its effect on margin and make the terms accurate. A reminder should help someone resume shopping, not invent urgency or suggest that stock is running out when it is not.

Keep the important terms consistent across your website, email, social posts, ads, and any marketplace storefront: the discount, eligible products, dates, and exclusions should not conflict. Adapt the creative and landing page to each channel, but make the destination and promise match.
Shopify recommends coordinated campaigns and omnichannel activity, and its guide discusses Amazon as an additional sales channel. Amazon Ads recommends planning advertising across lead-up, peak, and lead-out phases. Use a shared campaign calendar and a final offer check so updates in one place do not leave another channel showing an outdated promotion. 10. Make delivery and returns part of the promise
Check inventory, show available delivery choices at checkout, publish realistic delivery cutoffs, and explain the return policy before customers pay. Coordinate those promises with fulfillment capacity; a promotion that attracts orders the business cannot ship as described can undermine trust.
DHL’s 2025 release reported that 82% of surveyed Black Friday shoppers said they would abandon a basket if their preferred delivery option was unavailable at checkout. This is a shopper-survey result, not a universal abandonment rate for every store. DHL’s release describes global surveys of 24,000 online shoppers across 24 markets and 4,050 businesses across 19 countries. DHL Group’s Black Friday trends release
How to choose which ideas to prioritize
Not every business has the staff, inventory, or budget to run all ten tactics at once. Prioritize according to the store’s constraints and the part of the customer journey most in need of attention.
| Decision | Compare | Practical question |
|---|---|---|
| Offer type | Margin impact and customer-perceived value | Will the bundle or discount remain profitable after fulfillment costs? |
| Marketing channel | Audience fit and cost | Can the channel reach likely buyers within the available budget? |
| Early access or peak activity | Timing and staff capacity | Can the team serve an early window without weakening support during peak demand? |
| Delivery promise | Reliability, customer choice, and return clarity | Can inventory and carriers support the options and cutoff dates shown at checkout? |
Track results against a clear baseline, such as a comparable campaign or period, and account for differences in dates, inventory, pricing, and audience. Shopify reported that its merchants generated approximately $14.6 billion in global sales during Black Friday-Cyber Monday 2025, up 27% from 2024. That figure is Shopify merchant GMV, not total global retail sales; Shopify describes it as approximate and unaudited, notes that methodology can vary year to year, and says its 2025 customer-count methodology changed. It is context for that platform’s merchants, not a forecast for an individual business. Shopify’s 2025 BFCM sales announcement
