A travel article published April 23, 2026, listed nine destinations with example exchange rates and hotel and meal costs. Those dated examples can help with initial planning, but they are not current exchange quotes or a definitive ranking. To estimate where your budget will go furthest, compare local travel prices as well as the exchange rate.
Why a high exchange-rate number does not mean a cheap trip
An exchange rate tells you how many units of another currency one U.S. dollar converts into. It does not tell you the price of a hotel room, meal, or activity. For example, a currency with thousands of units per dollar is not automatically better value for a traveler than one with only a few units per dollar.
Travel value depends on both the conversion rate and the local prices you actually pay. The nine examples below include hotel and meal estimates, but they are publisher-reported figures from Kiplinger’s April 23, 2026 article—not a shared, independently verified cost survey. The listed exchange rates should not be treated as October 2026 rates.
Nine destinations with dated travel-cost examples
Kiplinger reported the following approximate figures. Its surfaced entries do not establish a tenth destination or a consistent ranking, so the countries are presented without ranking.

All figures in the table are estimates reported by Kiplinger on April 23, 2026. They are not refreshed market rates, and the hotel and meal figures are not identified here as a standardized, comparable sample. Use them as starting points rather than as a promise of what a trip will cost.
How to judge where your travel budget will stretch
- Check the exchange rate for your travel dates. Rates move, and the examples above are not live quotes. Compare the rate offered by your bank or card issuer with any cash-exchange option, including fees.
- Price the costs you expect to incur. Check lodging in the places and dates you plan to visit, then estimate meals, local transport, and activities. A low hotel estimate does not establish a low total trip cost.
- Compare like with like. Use the same trip length, accommodation standard, meal pattern, and cost categories for each destination. The Kiplinger figures do not provide a consistent all-in daily budget across the nine countries.
- Check practical conditions separately. Entry requirements, transport access, and safety advice can affect both feasibility and cost. For current guidance, consult official sources for your nationality and destination before booking.
Dollar strength depends on the currency and the period
The dollar does not move uniformly against every currency. Morningstar Investment Management’s 2026 Global Outlook reported that through September 2025 the dollar had depreciated 13.5% against the euro, 13.9% against the Swiss franc, and 6.4% against the yen; it also reported a 5.6% decline against a basket of major emerging-market currencies. These are historical changes over a specified period, not current exchange rates or measures of travel affordability.
Rank #2
Morningstar also said that, among 34 major developed- and emerging-market currencies it tracked, only nine were more overvalued than the U.S. dollar, using data as of September 30, 2025. That valuation assessment is not a count of currencies where U.S. visitors get favorable prices. Deutsche Bank Research Institute’s 2025 price-level analysis likewise illustrates why comparisons depend on methodology: it adjusted purchasing-power-parity conversion rates with year-end foreign-exchange rates, and noted that historical estimates can change with revisions.

A defensible top-ten list would need a stated method, a common observation date, broad country coverage, and comparable travel-cost data. The available Kiplinger article names nine countries in its surfaced entries, while the dollar and price-level reports provide context rather than a current travel ranking. Without those missing elements, adding a tenth country or ranking the nine by how many currency units a dollar buys would be misleading.
